Forsaken Remastered adds Vulkan support to the Linux version
15 Sep 2018 at 9:08 am UTC

Quoting: liamdaweNote: Updated the text to be clearer, it's Steam wanting to use system SDL, not Forsaken. Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.
Which should be fixed, id I read the bug report correctly? (Not yet in bionic, though)

Forsaken Remastered adds Vulkan support to the Linux version
13 Sep 2018 at 11:17 am UTC

for some reason on Ubuntu 18.04 Forsaken Remastered wants to use the system installed SDL (instead of the Steam runtime) which causes Vulkan in the game not to work
Meanwhile, you could try to run steam with
STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0 steam
It just has to do with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH order, that was changed a while back (the current default is 1). Steam should probably get involved a bit more, and could even provide its own loader, I think.

Thanks Icculus!

Quoting: PatolaBorderlands 2 GOTY + All DLCs + Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel [External Link] with 91% off. Amazing.
Interesting, it looks like the euro price hiked from 19.99 ($1=€1) to 29.99 [a whooping 75% more than the USD price] for no apparent reason in december 2015, according to steamDB: https://steamdb.info/app/49520/ [External Link] That, plus the fact that 90% of what I don't own is cosmetic DLC, will make me pass on this one.

BTW, it's 81% off, but some special offers stack, so 91% if you don't own anything yet. Much less appealing to me for now.
Well, if the bundle stays around, I might buy it in the future, of course ;)

What are you clicking on this weekend and what do you think about it?

I ended up playing more FTL than I'd be comfortable admitting. Being stuck on my cellphone's plan, and having already eaten trough 10GB, I was looking for something light to download.

This time, I did an easy playtrough, though, which allowed me to beat the final boss for the first time \o/

Quoting: Stupendous ManI just stupidly did rm * on the root partition while trying to migrate to a new M.2 ssd. I stopped it within 2 seconds of having issued the command but already 8GB had been deleted, including everything in /bin and /usr/bin... :D

Luckily my last automatic backup was only 10 hours old, so I'm already back up and running with no data loss.

Quoting: HmeGrabbed a copy of DOOM (2016) for 7€, thinking I would test this whole proton thing not expecting much...
IT RUNS SO SMOOTH!
Where did you find it at that price?
It's quite cheap on the humble store right now.

Sadly, I won't play much over the weekend, and I still have a huge backlog. So, tempted as I am, I think I'll refrain from buying more stuff. But after this, I intend to check every game in my library for compatibility with proton ;)

Quoting: mondalaciIs this "Accept cookies" bullshit necessary for every single video playback?! I have to press the button, then click on the video. It's a tad overkill, and hurts the usability of the site. What if the site remembered that the user accepted the cookies previously, so this overlay would only be displayed before accepting them?
That would require a cookie, though :D
Well, I personally prefer it that way, as I can easily open the video with newpipe or in private browsing. But I guess it could be an option in the UCP? Well, the website is open source... :P

The gameplay video was great, but I'm confused. Why did I see a UT99 (great game, BTW) flak cannon and rocket launcher? As well as a few other games weapons?
And I would peraonally call this a gzdoom mod, rather than a doom mod ;)

Quoting: g000hI don't have a good idea what the clues are pointing towards, however just sharing a few titles that it "could" be, and I would like. Trying to avoid ridiculous titles which will never come to Linux.

Shadow Warrior 2 (I did manage to shoe-horn the clues onto this title earlier)
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Hitman 2
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War (note that the Definitive Edition is due soon, on Windows)
Left Alive (Square Enix)
Elex
Halo: Master Cheif Collection for sure

;)
Isn't that an XBONE exclusive? It was last time I checked...

Valve are already pushing ahead with updates to Steam Play's Proton with a beta channel

Quoting: jardonController issues
Interesting to read that your controller works with BP but not with games. Is your system updated? What distribution? Have you tried another one [or a Steam flatpak]? What kernel version? Have you tried both with and without the Steam Runtime? Did you disable the Steam overlay? Did you open an issue on Valve's Github? Is it a nonstandard controller?

That's all I can think of in the top of my head :)

Quoting: tuubi
Quoting: Cyba.CowboyHave they (Valve Software) given any indication as to when they're hoping to make this available in the stable version of the Steam client for Linux-based operating systems? Or is this still a mystery?
It's Valve. I bet the answer is "when it's done". Or in this case, as soon as they deem it good enough that it won't be impossible to support.

As of now there are still several stumbling blocks to clear, like the requirement for bleeding edge / beta graphics drivers. They'll also want to expand that whitelist a bit. These things matter if they want to make it easier for gamers to migrate to Linux. This has the potential to result in (undeserved) bad publicity for the operating system so I'd rather they take their time.
Well, maybe they could ship with a recent version of Mesa (+llvm), or even a few ones, and add a bit of logic to determine which verion to use:
  • use a bundled beta release, but only on whitelisted hardware
  • use bundled mesa release only if the kernel is compatible
  • don't use the bundled Mesa release if the one from the host OS is recent enough

I don't see it being that complex to implement... They could probably distribute the nvidia drivers as well, and compile their own kernel modules (could be done trough Steam -> Update graphics drivers, I recall they have this on windows; I'm not sure if it is still present on Linux, I'll have to double check, but it doesn't do anything anyway).

Quoting: elmapuli just wish we could find an way to stop using MS code entirely, even if we arent using the windows kernel and windows, we are still runing direct X and its libraries
Technically, we are just using the APIs. The Direct 3D library isn't the one from Microsoft, but the one that has been implemented in wine/DXVK. So enjoy your Microsoft-free code!

Quoting: GuestIn the original message i read this: "Steam Play whitelisted games will not be offered for purchase or marked as supported on Linux on the Store during the initial Beta period."

Does this mean that after the beta there won't be any indicator to distinguish these wine games from properly supported game? I wouldn't want to buy such games full price, and this will probably make me ditch steam...
Interesting find, thanks for sharing! I disagree on the second part, though. It is still be properly supported by valve, in theory. And they will probably make it a tiny bit different (like the OS logo right to SteamPlay, instead of left).
That also reminds me that platform-specific purchases might come to an end with this.

Quoting: pb
Quoting: Lolo01I would like to try this beta version, but Steam is downloading again all the Windows games already installed...
Are you sure those are not 0b downloads? Because that's what happens to me with every (re)start of the steam client - suddenly I have a couple dozens of 0b "downloads" of the games installed with proton - I attribute it to behind-the-scenes configuration changes and maybe shader caches, but it sure is annoying.
3 times 15Gb don't need same time as 0b download, so yes i'm sure ;)

Just launched Steam this morning and the same games are downloading fully again !!!
For me, when proton updates, all games show up in the update queue, and indicate the weight of the Proton update (350MiB), but that is only really downloaded once.
