Some thoughts on Ziggurat

Yes, I wouldn't call this game "closed room", this is more likely due to its Rogue like nature.

This game looks quite good, but I've never gone around to actually buy it.
I really like Tower of Guns as a Rogue like FPS, and wish there was some multiplayer.

AMDGPU-PRO 17.10 driver released

Quoting: mas886Is there any reason why should I use PRO drivers instead of the open ones?
Well, it allows you to use your GPU as compute device for Cycles in Blender, for example. Or use filmic-blender. =)

But open driver is better for gaming in my case. =) Dirt Showdown, Hitman, Serious Sam and Mad Max work more smoothly with it.
Quick note: You can also install the AMDGPU-PRO OpenCL part, and still use the open drivers for OpenGL :)

For arch: install opencl-amd from AUR (source [External Link].

Mad Max meets Vulkan in a new fully public beta for Linux, benchmarks and OpenGL vs Vulkan comparisons

Quoting: GuestUnfortunately, on my rig the experience is not the best.
Didn't try the benchmarks, but on a gtx750 + i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30GHz the games stutters, badly.
leaving max still and camera NOT moving, the fps goes from 70fps to 18fps, then 70 again.
driver version is the latest, 378.13
cpu is at 60% and gpu at 100%
Don't forget to report to Feral, they specifically requested it.

Steam now has a bunch of Anime shows you can buy, also a sale on Anime games

I would need a few things to start buying movies from Steam:

1. A better player. Seriously, I can't even make the videos full screen without Garbage showing up on the screen. And take their documentary "free to play" : a shitty Adobe air player, that didn't work at all on my system. Luckily, they had the Giles laying around...
2. DRM free. I don't buy DRM-ed movies.
3. Available without streaming. Because that's so much more convenient.
4. A proper public API to retrieve movies from something other than the Steam client.
Edit: 5. No region lock. This is somewhat related to 2 and 3, but officially supporting it would be nice.

I think I might as well start my own distribution network (And I have been considering it pretty seriously for quite some time now).
But still, it's great to see things moving a bit in that area at Valve :)

Quoting: sarmadI am guessing the bigger part of the performance boost is coming from the OpenGL version not being as optimized as it should. There is no way Vulkan (or any API for that matter) can make this much difference. However, this is probably an indication that it's easier to optimize the code under Vulkan than it is under OpenGL, which by itself is enough reason to introduce Vulkan. Good job Feral, and Khronos too.
Your guess is wrong.

Well.....the answer is a bit more of a grey area. While Vulkan will remove some driver overhead, it doesn't make this kind of difference if the OpenGL port could be fully optimised "the OpenGL way". The gotcha in this case is "if"; it simply isn't feasible to redo the entire game engine to make it work better with OpenGL.
And the extensions for AZDO aren't always available, or some of them are vendor-specific. Plus, I am not sure there is a way to reuse queues and buffers simply with OpenGL, nor explicit memory management. And you still have the driver state machine.
While AZDO is possible with OpenGL, if you know what you are doing, you are better off with Vulkan, in my understanding and opinion ;)

X-Plane 11 is now officially available with day-1 Linux support

It's not cheap at £44.99
IIRC, the previous ones were waaay more expensive ;)

I especially like the new UI. That was the biggest gripe people (myself included) had with it, and the reason why people kept comparing it to FSX.
That weather selection system looks very nice.

Now, if only they could include some ultralight planes by default... I don't have a Boeing pilot license ^^"

But still, definitely one of the best simulations available out there, if not the best (depending on your criteria).

Quoting: M@yeulCThat's great news, I'm really excited! Good work Feral, as always!

Now, I just need to buy a Vulkan-capable card... :D
What do you have now? A $100 AMD RX 460 or Nvidia GTX 1050 can run Vulkan. Heck, even older cards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulkan_(API)#Compatibility [External Link]
It's listed on my PC info: HD6870. I am pondering whether I should get a RX 480 or R9 Fury (which are approximately the same price) now, or wait for Vega to come out (at the very least to judge how they fare, and maybe grab one of the former top-end cards as their prices go down. I'm quite constrained budget-wise, but a complete upgrade wouldn't be overkill, I think).

This article also explains the fact that today was a rather slow news day. I guess Liam was busy with these benchmarks :P

Fixed for you ;)
Haha, I was thinking something along the same lines... back when not only did Halo release on PC's, but some of those PC's running it were running Mac OS even when Mac OS was quite unpopular. Now people in general think of Microsoft when they think "Halo". Of course, some of us think of Bungie and Halo's predecessors, the Marathon series :)
Well, to be fair, the game was first developped under Apple's umbrella. You can find youtube videos of the first announcement... By Steve Jobs [External Link] (first link in a quick search, I didn't check if it was the best one). Dear irony...

Quoting: Beamboom"it will be released on windows, mac and other PC platforms". Why on earth did they pronounce "Linux" like that?
Technically, Mac is a PC "platform" nowadays. So are other consoles :P

I have so many questions about this project, but I think I'll contact the devs directly.

Very nice to see such a project. I had heard about one using the source engine, but this one looks promising.
I would be willing to help, if that's not a completely closed project.

I still remember my Halo CD key! The Halo universe isn't amazing, by today's standards, but it was one of the most coherent and realistic ones at the time. And the gameplay was pretty revolutionary as well.
