So folks it may or may not be coming, but Valve has now officially filed for a trademark on Half-Life 3.

You can search for yourself here. So you know it's not a joke from us!

So a bit of fun speculation, will it be a SteamOS exclusive? I am completely unsure on that, but it certainly would help them move a few boxes I would think!

Personally I have only completely Half-Life one since it came to Linux, I still have Half-Life 2 to complete so this will give me a bit of a push I think.

What are your thoughts Linux gamers?

It has been pointed out that these can be faked, I hope this isn't. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Interesting that Half Life 2 isn't listed when searching for "Half Life".

To be honest, I wouldn't count on that -- Windows / SteamOS are likely the targets for initial release (*if* they release).

Valve would be crazy not to do exactly this.

Not if it is advertised right, Call it Early access and SteamOS is the only officially supported OS (and just happens to work on Linux).

Windows/Mac/Linux all get access to the finished product when it officially launches.

Yeah, that might work. Platform exclusives aren't Valve's style generally, I think, but there must be a section at Valve furiously thinking of ways that they can make this a SteamOS exclusive without incurring the backlash of angry Windows gamers.

Ultimately, they know who butters their bread, and while they definitely want SteamOS to succeed, alienating their current customers is a risky venture.

Won't be linux exclusive, but will probably have specials on it.
Steambox will be a lot complicated often needing another pc to do the rendering work and stuff like that, because of not being able to run a lot of games (the merchandised hundreds are mostly indy titles).

We'll see, and I don't even see that, they probably TM it so nobody else can. As well as getting a TM is often one of the first steps in a progress, so it won't align with the steambox release.

I wish HL3 won't be linux exclusive. I don't like PS3 or xbox exclusive games, and of course I hate windows exclusive. I don't want linux became a windows 2.0.

Through the trademark office?!  Weakest confirmation ever, Valve :D

Seriously though, Valve aren't idiots.  If they made it an exclusive, they know that the hate would be bad, and the other (albeit lame) players in digital distribution would have a field day, sort of like the XBone/PS4 fiasco.  Also, it would make me sad because that's just not the "Linux way" to be.  I don't want Windows, Mac, or console gamers to have a bad day, I just want to also be considered.  I think there will be simultaneous launches, and that will make me plenty happy.

Special hats and trading cards, however... well, that's almost guaranteed, I would think!

Well, I finished Half-Life 1, HL: Opposing Force, HL: Blue Shift, Half-Life 2 and I just finished HL2: Episode 1 some minutes ago, now I will play Episode 2, I don´t think it will be an exclusive for SteamOS or, if so, only for a limited time maybe, I think they can advertise that the game is optimized to run on SteamOS and it will have a better performance in this platform but everybody will be able to play (and have to in my opinion). Well, this is a trademark registration, it can become a game (please, do it Valve!) or not, I really hope we have HL 3 in the near future!
