DayZ is not currently coming to Linux, but the developers are open to it

By - | Views: 17,842

During a recent livestream, the DayZ [Steam] developers mentioned Linux and a few people went wild. Sadly, they meant this in relation to dedicated servers, but the door remains open.

Here's what they actually said during it:

After that we're just going to give you the server files, both for Windows and maybe down the road Linux which is in preparation right now.

I had multiple emails, a bunch of mentions across our social spaces and it popped up on reddit that people thought it was coming to Linux. I just want to make sure the record is set straight. I spoke to the DayZ developers, who said this to me directly today (quoted with permission):

That mention was indeed dedicated to us supporting Linux servers mostly. We’re definitely open to supporting Linux for the game itself, but that’ll be realistic only after we reach the 1.0 version of the game, as the multi platform/system development would become a bit tricky when still in Early Access.

Who knows, maybe we will see it later down the line, maybe not. It's good that they remain open to it, but for now it's not coming to Linux.

I really disagree with this idea. I understand that they are not able to do zero day testing for multiple platform but if you want to support other platform you have to at least do the necessary work in order to get your design flexible enough for multiplatform. Leaving all to the end just means a bigger cost for the port and, in the end, low to nill profits on those platforms.

DayZ has been around for what feels like forever. If they haven't ported by now, they probably never will.

Quoting: Guestnot a big loss considering the game runs like crap anyway on windows,it won't be much better on linux.there are mostly negative reviews of it so glad that it's not coming over.

I always hope for one game that will just happen (not by design) to run like crap on windows but be ported on linux and will run wonderful. That would be a funny PR success for linux.

Not Day Z related but this did remind me of another game that supposedly getting a linux client.

@Liam did you ping Oxide/Stardock regards Ashes ?

Wonder if Tim S had any more info regards Fortnight after his tweet about distros.

Well, if I understand it well, Bohemia Interactive is trying to unify its engines, so porting Dayz to Linux could have huge impact on other games like Arma 3, Take on Mars etc (and of course future games like native? Arma 4).

Quoting: NanobangCan we agree that if anyone wants to use Linux for their game's servers, they have to also release their game on Linux? (Otherwise, we can send the boys around to, heh, you know, "talk" to them).
I think not. Linux is excellent server software and if someone wants to use Linux only as server I by no means would ever disagree with that.

I do hope you knew I was just joking about the Linux servers thing ;) (Not the bit about the existence of "the boys" ... I was deadly serious about that. As I'm sure you know, the Linux Mafia (a.k.a the Birds in Black) is a very real thing, and Don Torvalds and his enforcers are not to be joked about).

I was kind of indifferent at first. Day Z seems to have lost any player base it had to PUBG and recently Fornite.
But if it leads to work on the engines to better support Linux in future then why not.
