Steam Deck got a few Beta updates recently so here's what's new

By - | Views: 23,497

While I was briefly away camping, Valve released a few Steam Deck Beta updates so here's a round-up of what's new in case you also missed it.

Spread across a Steam Deck OS (SteamOS) Beta update and a Steam Deck Client update the recent improvements include:

  • Fixed styling for CJK keyboard glyphs so everything appears centered correctly on keys
  • Fixed Recommended Layout not always showing up for the author of controller configuration
  • Fixed CJK font issues in SteamOS updater when running on Steam Deck
  • Fixed focus issue when tapping the show/hide password button
  • Removed the gap between keys on the virtual keyboard for improved typing
  • Improved performance for Forza Horizon 5
  • Temporarily reverted RDR2 VRAM workaround to pre-3.3 behavior
  • Fixed an issue causing random 0.2s stutter
  • Fixed an issue causing performance drops when a UI element appeared on screen if the performance HUD was enabled.

To access these improvements you need to be on the Preview channel for updates which you can find in Settings > System > Steam Update Channel.

"Removed the gap between keys on the virtual keyboard for improved typing"

Thank God, I'd have been just as happy had they simply removed the haptic pulse when moving *off* of the key, but this is also a good solution.

Liam, how was the steam deck on your travels? Did the battery last long enough for a proper gaming session and such?

It's a pornable gaming device, so it'd be great to hear how it works for real-world usage instead of just in peoples homes, on charge all the time!

(After all, what's the point of a portable gaming device, if it's not travelling?)

Pornable? Are you insinuating that Liam enjoys “entertainment” other than gaming on his Steam Deck? 😆

Perfect. Exactly what I expected. Naturally you need to pick the right games if you’re going to be away from any power so it’s just knowing that and planning a bit ahead. Made the evenings a lot nicer 😅

Nice! How long did the battery last playing games on a full charge? I'd expect this to have been important considering there probably wasn't much opportunity of charging while camping?

Not something anyone could tell you. It’s different for every game.

Generally, I find the estimate of ~2–6 hours is pretty good. A 3D game, especially with more photorealistic graphics, tends to drop it down, and a 2D game without fancy graphics tends to be higher. I haven't gotten too deep into power usage optimization, though.

Hmm, seems on par with mine then. I was a bit concerned about my battery for a while, since playing 3D games from 2006 (Flatout 2 for example) would drain the battery in about 2 hours with all the power settings set to tell the device to use as little power as possible

But if it's normal, then that's fine

Yeah, I got about 2 hours or so playing Stray. it really is a pretty huge leap in power necessary for 3D rendering compared to just putting a bunch of 2D sprites on a screen (though any comparison is complicated by other things that need power to compute too, like AI logic, which will all be unique to each game).
