Godot Engine has a new funding platform and they're calling for help

By - | Views: 19,361

With Godot Engine moving over to being supported by the Godot Foundation directly, they've begun pushing for people to support their efforts via their new funding platform inspired by Blender.

Part of the reason they're announcing this now is that when Godot was smaller it was gathering more funds than it could use as they couldn't find developers to hire. Now, everything around Godot has grown significantly but now they're at a level of spending greater than what they're pulling in.

Previously they used Patreon, PayPal donations and one-time grants but they're hoping to be more self-sufficient if they can get enough people to come to them directly. To give an example of where some funding goes, they current have 10 either part or full time contracted to work on Godot directly which is costing $40,000 per month.

They have numerous other expenses to cover as well including hardware, travel costs, future hires for work needed to improve Godot in specific areas and more.

You can find the funding platform here that notes they currently get €23,024 per month (around $25,794). However, they will be keeping their Patreon as right now they are relying on it but they hope to see future donations come direct so they have less fees.

Some other plans are in progress too like a paid asset store and merchandise.

The Godot contributors are very active in engine development and triaging issues. Over the years I have seen a growing amount of incredibly rude users piggybacking on issues to put the maintainers down, and they still plug along to make the engine as good as it can be with the resources that they have.

Huge respect to the Godot team, if I made games I would gladly throw some money their way.

Merch is quite straightforward - GOL has that, too - but a paid asset store is a gnarly problem to solve. It can be lucrative - as seen with Unity and Unreal Engine - but it does take a lot of resources to keep the whole thing running.
