Persona 5 Strikers fully playable on Steam Deck with this tweak

By - | Views: 27,592

Since its release in October 2022, Persona 5 Royal has been one of the perfect Steam Deck games. Persona 5 Royal's design being very well suited for handheld play; combined with being a very well optimized PC Port overall. Its sequel / spin-off, Persona 5 Strikers, has not fared so well. Despite launching on Steam in February 2021, well before Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5 Strikers is still listed as Unsupported on Steam Deck.

While Strikers has been mostly playable, cutscene audio didn't play and given that Strikers carries the story heavy design of Persona, that might as well be unplayable. However, thanks to Swish on Proton DB, this issue has been resolved and Persona 5 Strikers can be played start to end on Steam Deck.

In order to implement this fix, you'll need to set Compatibility to GE Proton 8 (GE-Proton Guide). I personally used 8-3 but you might be able to use newer versions. After that you'll need to enter this code into your launch options:

GST_PLUGIN_FEATURE_RANK=protonaudioconverterbin:NONE %command%

Once done you can test it by just starting a new game as the game immediately hits you with an anime cutscene.

My testing showed that I could run Strikers at a stable 60 fps on mid settings and the Steam Performance Overlay showed a two-to-three-hour battery life from a 90% charge. This beats out the Switch version, which could only do 30 fps, and puts the Deck on par with the PS4 version running on PS5.

Given the fast-paced hack and slash design of Strikers compared to Royal's turn-based design, 60 fps is more important here than it was in Royal. Keep that in mind if you decide to cut back settings to save battery life. I did experiment with the settings and found that 40 fps was still smooth, but 30 fps was just too far back.

If Steam Deck playability was the only thing keeping you from picking up this continuation of the Phantom Thieves story, now you can go for it!

You can pick up Persona 5 Strikers on Fanatical, Humble Store and Steam.

A humble Steam Deck owner and fledgling Linux user in general. I've always been interested in Linux replacing Windows as the primary PC gaming OS. But it was always a mess of frustration, drivers, and not knowing which kernel was best. When SteamOS3 and Steam Deck hit the scene however, I realized the true potential of Linux as a gaming platform.

I don't have the game but if someone could test this protonfix for Proton-GE should work.

Just create the file 1382330.py in
~/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton8-?/protonfixes/gamefixes/

and inside it:

""" Persona 5 Strikers
Missing voices/sounds in cutscenes
Requires disabling the gstreamer protonaudioconverterbin plugin to get full audio in cutscenes.
fixed by Swish in Protondb
"""
#pylint: disable=C0103

from protonfixes import util

def main():
    util.set_environment('GST_PLUGIN_FEATURE_RANK', 'protonaudioconverterbin:NONE')

Found out it also fixes Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster
