DUSK HD + SDK & Steam Workshop out now - needs Proton on Linux / Steam Deck

David Szymanski + New Blood Interactive have released DUSK HD as a free DLC for the retro FPS, but you'll need Proton to play it on Linux Desktop and Steam Deck.

It's been released as a free optional DLC, so you only have to play the remastered version if you want to. From the release announcement they mentioned that DUSK HD started as "a fun way to beef up the DUSK Steam Workshop soon evolved into a full blown visual remaster thanks to the hard work of a group of very talented developers at New Blood". So now there's DUSK HD, an SDK for modders and Steam Workshop support.

Looks like their original Native Linux version, which is what Valve picked for the Steam Deck Verified badge, has not seen any updates. So, if you want to try out any of the fancy new stuff on Linux / Steam Deck, you'll need to manually swap the game over to use Proton. To do so:

  • Go into the game properties.
  • Pick the Compatibility menu.
  • Select Proton 8 or Proton Experimental from the drop-down box.

Their modding support is still being worked on though as they had to "basically rewrite the entire game and engine from scratch" and so the full DUSK DDK (Dusk Development Kit) built on the new DUSK is "still a few weeks away" but once done "you will be able to play all the custom maps with both Classic or HD visuals, replace weapons, models and more". It even supports Quake and Half Life maps.

You can buy DUSK from:

Pretty awesome stuff. Given that the development kit hasn't been released yet, Linux version will probably be updated soon enough, so I'm not too bothered. They clearly wanted to release the HD DLC as soon it was done anyway.

It's interesting to me that they're releasing upgraded visuals. To me that was the least important thing about the whole game! Such a wonderful game, hope the devs go on to do more amazing stuff!

I’ve not seen any indication they plan to update the original Linux version.

Sadly looks like it's not going to be updated for native Linux. Looks like another dev that decided to drop support.

I don't mind playing with Proton, but game devs imo should keep all platforms they claim to support up to date, or at least remove the linux icon if the game isn't up to date.

This also causes confusion for steam deck players, since Valve has set the native version for the steam deck. Now they will probably need to update that to use proton instead for customers to get the actual game.
