The first release of GE-Proton based on Wine 9.0 / Proton 9.0 is here with GE-Proton 9-1 bringing in a lot of fixes for various games and new games added to ULWGL (Unified Linux Wine Game Launcher).

As a reminder: ULWGL is a new unified launcher for running Windows games on Linux, it's basically a copy of how the Steam Linux Runtime/Steam Runtime Tools work to allow Proton to properly run outside of Steam, along with various specific game tweaks. It's not a standalone launcher like Lutris or Heroic, they would instead use it directly. GE-Proton itself is a community-built version of Proton, not supported by Valve, that often has fixes Valve can't distribute (sometimes for legal reasons, other times for more QA testing time).

Here's all the changes for GE-Proton 9-1:

Proton:

  • Pulled in upstream changes from proton 9 bleeding edge
  • wine updated to Proton 9 bleeding edge
  • dxvk updated to latest git
  • vkd3d updated to latest git

Wine:

  • All previous proton-ge patches rebased to proton 9 (thanks for the FSR rebase loathingKernel)
  • Star Citizen EAC patch removed, no longer needed, instead currently uses protonfix with EOS_USE_ANTICHEATCLIENTNULL=1
  • Wine-staging rebased on top of proton 9 bleeding edge wine

Protonfixes:

  • core count fix added for farcry primal (allows game to run)
  • added ulwgl entry for egs version of farcry primal
  • core count fix added for farcry 2
  • added ulwgl entry for uplay and egs versions of farcry 2
  • core count fix added for far cry blood dragon
  • added ulwgl entries for uplay and egs versions of far cry blood dragon
  • added ulwgl entries for uplay and egs version of farcry 3
  • added ulwgl entries for uplay and egs versions of farcry 4
  • added ulwgl entry for egs version of uncharted legacy of thieves collection
  • added fixes for Trails in the Sky 1-3 and ulwgl entries for the gog versions (thanks keenanweaver)
  • added core count fix for New World
  • added zoom games platform for ulwlgl
  • added fix for duke nukem manhatten project zoom edition
  • added fixes and ulwgl entries for the gog version of Soldier of Fortune II (thanks keenanweaver)
  • added fix for Street Racing Syndicate (thanks doZennn)
  • added fix and ulwgl entry for zoom version of hardwar (thanks keenanweaver)
  • added fix for They Are Billions and ulwgl entry for gog version (thanks zocker-160)
  • added fix for black screen in Grim Dawn and add ulwgl entry for gog version (thanks Aqa-Ib)
  • added fix for Dirt 3 complete edition
  • added fix for Postal III (thanks doZennn)
  • added fixes for Incoming trilogy (thanks doZennn)
  • fixed assetto corsa dotnet not installing (game runs again)
  • added fix and ulwgl entry for GOG version of Silent Hill 4 (thanks keenanweaver)
  • added fix and ulwgl entry for GOG version of Wheel of Time (thanks keenanweaver)
  • added fix for Gabriel Knight 3 (thanks marianoag)
  • added fix for Gobliiins 5 (thanks marianoag)
  • added fix for Ceville (thanks marianoag)
  • added fix for Nine Witches: Family Disruption (thanks marianoag)
  • xrandr added to protonfixes for screen resolution detection -- this is needed for some games like gothic/gothic 2 (fixes for those those games are still a work in progress)
  • added fix which wil skip running winetricks in protonfixes if no internet connection is available. A winetricks check is performed on every run. If a winetrick is found to be missing it tries to install it. During that time it will check if there is an internet connection available. If there is not one, the winetrick is skipped until the next time the game is run and subsequently the winetrick.)

Known Issue:

  • wmv video playback regression in some games (one example being Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3). This is a known regression in upstream proton and they are aware/working on it.

Here's a text guide on how to install GE-Proton.

Download ProtonUp-Qt

For Steam Deck, make sure you're in Desktop Mode. Steam Button -> Power - Switch to Desktop.

  • Steam Deck / KDE Plasma - Open the Discover store, in the search box (top left) type in "ProtonUp-Qt", click it and hit Install (top right). Alternatively on Steam Deck if you have Decky Loader, you can also try the "Wine Cellar" plugin.
  • Manual install / GNOME - head to the official website, scroll down and pick your favourite download option either AppImage or Flathub. On GNOME desktops, you can also download via GNOME Software.

Using ProtonUp-Qt:

  • Launch ProtonUp-Qt.
  • Make sure it's set to Steam at the top and select to install GE-Proton.
  • Reload Steam to update the compatibility layer list.
  • In Steam:
    • Desktop: right click a game and go to Properties.
    • Steam Deck / Big Picture Mode: find the game in your library, go to the little cog on the right and then select Properties.
  • Compatibility menu -> Tick the box, select GE-Proton from the drop-down menu.

As usual, Trails fans just show up in random places just to show that they're everywhere and they're dedicated despite 'niche' that game is. Good work regardless, would love to see automated fixes for all of Yuzusoft games as well.

Turn based JRPG is a niche? I thought it was still a decently popular genre with lots of fans.

Trails is relatively niche compared to Tales and even Atelier series, I'd say. It's getting more popular, especially thanks to Cold Steel being an easy entry point, but it doesn't change that it's a 10+ games of continuous story. The only other games I know that's similarly one long unbroken storyline are Ys (which is also the same company) and Rance series (which is even more niche outside of Japan).

Ah, you're talking about the popularity of this particular game series, not the whole genre.

It seems like at least both Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel (couldn't be bothered to check the rest) have sold about as many copies as the most popular Atelier games. So I guess by your definition, Atelier is just as "niche". The Tales series seems to appeal to a wider market.

Huh. I guess the anti-woke group do talk about stuff they don't spend money on as much as the other side. Ryza was all over the internet though - in comparison, the most famous person who talks about Trails was Garnt from Trash Taste and Geoff from Mother's Basement.
Is ulwgl implemented in Heroic now? If I use the most up to date version do I need to do anything to make it work?

The only problem I’ve had with heroic in the past is the wine implementation being hit and miss. Games that load instantly on steam proton, when I play the gog version using heroic and wine tended to just hang or fail to load.
I was hoping that ulwgl is going to be the solution.

It looks like Far Cry Primal since it seems to be mentioned in the release notes.
