While we're all desperate to know what the heck the Steam Frame actually is, Valve released SteamOS 3.7.15 Beta "The Sound of Silence". This is the first update to SteamOS since SteamOS Beta 3.7.14 back at the start of July, hopefully more to come soon.

Since it's in Beta if you wish to try it on your device be it a Steam Deck or other handheld, you'll need to be opted into the Preview or Beta channel via Settings > System > System Update Channel.

Here's all that's new and improved:

General

  • Fixed power and clock limits sometimes getting reset after sleep.
  • Fixed a case where WiFi would fail to connect after sleep.
  • Improved battery charge time estimation.

Accessibility

  • Enabled multi-language support for the screen reader. The screen reader will default to the language configured under Settings->General.
  • The screen reader language may also be manually configured under Settings->Accessibility.

Audio

  • Fixed volume jumping to 100% upon removing 3.5mm headphones.
  • Fixed USB audio devices not being automatically switched to when connected.
  • Removed non-functional "Pro Audio" profile setting in desktop mode, which would disable audio until deselected
  • Fixed audio glitches in Ori and the Will of the Wisps.
  • Fixed audio distortion with the Steam Deck microphone in game recordings.

Non-Deck

  • Fixed grip buttons after sleep on the original Asus ROG Ally.
  • Improved support for the Lenovo Legion Go when using controllers detached in FPS mode.
  • Added support for updated Legion Go Controller Firmware.

Misc

  • Fixes for security advisories CVE-2025-55188, CVE-2025-6021, CVE-2025-6170, CVE-2025-49794, CVE-2025-49795, CVE-2025-49796, CVE-2025-6395, CVE-2025-32989, CVE-2025-32988, CVE-2025-32990, CVE-2024-23337, CVE-2024-53427, CVE-2025-48060, CVE-2025-49014, CVE-2025-8067, CVE-2025-8067, CVE-2025-7425, and GHSA-f946-j5j2-4w5m.

And still no beta version for desktops ¬¬

Oh, that's a pretty major ROG Ally fix. I'm planning to try it this Sunday - if I have the time to go my friend's place with good wifi. I'd need to make sure everything is backed up first, because the installer is unfortunately just a blind "deletes everything" one. So I'd need to install SteamOS, then re-install Windows (which isn't my preferred order), and then install Clover or rEFInd.

SteamOS is not meant for desktops (and most likely never will be), it's a very specialized operating system that only officially supports 2 handhelds. It's missing a ton of stuff you'd expect a regular desktop OS to have (like Nvidia drivers, printing support etc...). If you're looking for one, this is not it, you'd be better off with something like Bazzite that was inspired by SteamOS, but unlike the latter it works on nearly everything:tm: including virtually all x86 handhelds

...can someone please explain to me why no matter where I am on the internet, whether it reddit or gaming on Linux, there are people who try to shove Bazzite down your throat every time you mention SteamOS?emojiemoji
When I said desktops, I mean the typical PC you can assemble at home, like the original SteamOS was.

Because SteamOS is not a desktop OS period. It's a dedicated for-gaming OS. The reason Bazzite gets brought up is because it's closest thing to SteamOS that is infact for-desktop.

It's good that some knowledgeable people are correcting the false hype created by posers around SteamOS in online discussions. Maybe one day we won't see those "once SteamOS releases for desktop, I'm switching over!1!1!1!!"

Why do you think Raichiori would be searching for something else than a dedicated for-gaming OS when asking about SteamOS?

And Comandante Ñoñardo made clear they were talking about a PC box, not a PC dedicated to desktop application use.
