Mesa 17.1, the next big release for open source graphics drivers on Linux is closing in on release. The third release candidate is now available for testing. This RC fixes around 34 noted bugs in the release notes.

One of the big new features due for the Mesa 17.1 release is the shader cache, which should help with loading times and performance in shader heavy games.

It should also have the threaded OpenGL dispatch, which will improve performance in games like Borderlands 2 and Civilization VI.

The final Mesa 17.1 release should be released around the 5th of this month. It's going to be a good release that's for sure, kudos to all involved in Mesa development. Article taken from

Mesa turning into the savior for Linux gaming, all we need now is RADV to be updated allot so it actually performs good in Vulkan, or AMD's closed Vulkan code, either all. OH and Freesync, which I guess won't happen until the DC driver release in kernel 4.13 or something.
