GParted Names and Labels
Dorrit Apr 15, 2021
Although I searched I'm not sure I grasp it.
What is the difference between Names and Labels in GParted?

Name is for the partition, where as label is on the filesystem level.

So a partition with name "Foo" could have a filesystem on it with label "Bar". Quite confusing. It seems to be a compatibility thing. Older filesystems didn't have support for fancy labels.

I don't think I have ever used anything but filesystem labels.

The partition names are a feature in GPT that doesn't exist in legacy MBR partition tables. There are some advantages like unicode support regardless of filesystem features, the name persisting even if you wipe the partition's contents, or being able to name an empty or encrypted partition.

Thanks to both, your answers definitely clarified things
So, you could use the same designation, let's call it "Files", with both Name and Label?

Whatever you do, don’t do that. The universe will implode.
