Dear Valve and Steam Machines OEMs, you have it all wrong
By aironeous, 14 July 2016 at 4:37 am UTC Likes: 1

Ok now I'm just waiting for my credit card refund to clear $483 plus shipping there and back. My gift car refund of $260 has already cleared.
I am going to buy my gaming machine. Right now it's a 3 way tie for me.

Amazon warehouse deals --

1) First this - https://amzn.com/B015PYYDMQ at $699 open box
This is a Dell 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (6th Gen Intel Quad-Core i5-6300HQ Processor up to 3.2GHz, 8GB DDR3, 256GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M 4gb gddr5
plus I just need to add this 2tb hdd https://amzn.com/B00I8O6OQ4

Pro's - I can wipe the OS and install Steam OS or more likely KDE Neon plus steam and Kodi (lets not get into a distro argument, that's the 2 I'm going to choose from) and load some games right away while I'm waiting for the hdd to get here.

I get my ssd configured right out the gate, comments say easy access to add ram and hdd and one guy says 9.5mm is perfect. I can bring this to work and show off linux and/or steam at lunch time. It is low power consumption so it does not catch attention from the landlords. Has display plus hdmi so I can game at work or away somewhere else and come home and hook it up to my 27" monitor. Using KDE connect that is pre installed in Neon I can use my phone as a mouse and my bluetooth earphones and I can watch hulu, netflix, youtube, etc.

cons: No steam controller but I already have logitech 710's and I think the controller is still on sale anyways.

2) The Zotac nen open box warehouse deal https://amzn.com/B01A4FLYSW at $749 assuming my credit card refund clears tomorrow but I'll probably get it around a little over $700. Specs are Core i5-6400T Quad-Core NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive. Plus I will have to get this 250gb SSD https://amzn.com/B00TGIVZTW

Pro's - It looks nice. It's low power. It has Steam OS already installed, well actually that is not really a pro because I don't want it on the HDD, I want the OS on the SSD plus I want a 2tb hdd not a 1tb or maybe I can get an external bigger one and enclosure and run that through the USB3.0 It has a steam controller with it. It's easier to move around in the bedroom compared to a laptop.

Cons - I have a feeling I'm not going to like the debian desktop.... but do I really need a desktop on it? I already have a laptop with integrated graphics with KDE Neon on it. Maybe I can just use that for watching videos. Last time i looked at it, it seemed like a little work was needed to get to the graphics card in case it gets jarred loose. The Zotac I just got and returned got shocked during shipping and lost connections on a lot - wifi, hdd light would not come on and I had to push down on them plus the graphics never came up so that tells me the graphics card also came loose because the guy says it was fine when he shipped it. This worries me that i will have to learn the whole insides of this thing if I bring it anywhere in my backpack I'll be worried. I've never had a laptop that was sensitive like that.

Interesting note: in comparing the 2 cpu's it says here that the Zotac one is replaceable

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/285/Intel_Core_i5_Mobile_i5-6300HQ_vs_Intel_Core_i5_i5-6400T.html

Imagine in the future Zotac contracts to make the Steambox in mass and puts an access panel for the graphics card and has clear easy instructions to replace both the cpu and gpu the same way they have the drives and ram?

3) Build this http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/gCKH99/great-gaming-build minus the gtx 1070 wait until the 1060 comes out and buy it for $250 and in the mean time I have a spare gtx 750 just sitting here so I could install all my steam stuff while I am waiting.

Pros - everything
Cons - attracts negative attention from landlord. Previous tenant worked at home and drove the electricity up really high. Stationary.

Day of the Tentacle Now Available On Linux
By Cheeseness, 14 July 2016 at 2:37 am UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: tripyIf my memory serves right, it goes squished when I moved to my 1st flat.
I threw it away after that, it had lost its "superb".
Ah, rest in peace, awesome box o7

Quoting: Segata SanshiroGetting a bit defensive there. I'm sure Day of the Tentacle is a great game (a little before my time, but it's a classic I've always wanted to play). I'm sure you personally did a great job with this game.
I think there's a difference between being defensive and trying to explain a situation to reduce misinformation.

Glossing over that I can't find any communication from Double Fine where they'd said that the Linux port was "coming soon" before I started work (I did find "fashionably late" - is that it?) or anything that suggests they didn't have reason to believe a port would be ready within a reasonable timeframe, painting confirmation that buying the Windows version will get players the Mac and Linux versions when they're released (something some people actually want to know as clandestine behaviour comes across as super bizarre to me.

If they'd said "We plan to do a Linux version," when they had plans to not do a Linux version or if they'd said "The Linux version will be ready in a month," when they had reason to believe that it wouldn't be, then I'd get it, but I can't see any evidence of that ever having been the case.

Heck, even being grumpy about a post letting people know the game ran in Wine/offering to help people who wanted to do that would make more sense to me :D

Quoting: Segata SanshiroIf you really like the company, then give criticism where criticism is due so they can improve. Also, they said PC.
If you read my previous post, I mentioned that I did offer some constructive criticism at the time - I contacted the person who made the tweet within hours of them doing it to help them understand that Linux users wouldn't appreciate the sentiment and to remind them that "PC" includes Linux.

Quoting: t3gI picked it up on Humble Bundle (DRM free download and Steam key) today after waiting a while for the port. I also registered the game on Steam in GNU/Linux to hopefully send some money towards Cheese''s way for the port. Thanks for helping in getting it out! :D
I want to highlight that I don't get royalties on this game so whether or not you buy it doesn't directly affect me (this isn't unusual for contracted ports and I feel well looked after). People should only buy the game if they want to play it or if they want to support DF for their efforts to support GNU/Linux :)

User submission: Vulkan tutorials now up on github
By ShabbyX, 14 July 2016 at 1:57 am UTC Likes: 1

Quoting: SmalokiImpressive! I actually held off on learning Vulkan because I was told that you'd need a certain amount of experience with graphics programming to comprehend it. And since I just started playing around with OpenGL three months ago, I figured I'd never be able to get into Vulkan.

I'd say you need to know a bit of math, matrix transformations in particular, but then again you would need to know that for any graphics API anyway! To be honest, when I didn't know about something in Vulkan, I would look it up in the context of OpenGL (where there are a lot of info online), and almost everything, conceptually, is the same. I don't see why you wouldn't learn Vulkan directly.

Only thing I can say about that, and I'm sure you know already, is that it's much easier in OpenGL to get something drawn on the screen. But once you can do that in Vulkan, everything else is actually much easier; the API is very clean, there is zero cruft, and no strange behavior because of legacy.

Quoting: Smaloki... no Vulkan binding for Vala atm. Maybe I'll implement one myself someday...

How awesome would that be? :)

Exit Fate, a 50-hour 2D RPG now on Linux
By Philadelphus, 14 July 2016 at 1:09 am UTC

Apparently the help isn't completely finished—trying to read entries on Elements, Battles, and Wars got me a little pop-up about missing text or image files and an instant crash. It's also flat-out wrong in places—the cancel key is not B, it's X.

The game itself isn't exactly my cup of tea from the half hour I've played, but that video review made it sound so compelling I'm willing to give it a go.

Quoting: liamdaweYeah I know. It's just the usual for us, but it would still be nice if porters were able to get in early enough so that we don't see delays.

It's not exactly a long delay, which is more my point.
It doesn't matter how long the delay is, you're still losing money you could be earning by putting out a finished product. That's two more months of rent, bills, food costs, etc. that you'd need to be paying while sitting on a finished product that you could put on sale right now. For a small studio that doesn't have millions in the bank, that's a very significant consideration.

While I very much agree it'd be nice to see more development done in such a way that there are simultaneous cross-platform releases (definitely support the developers who do!), from a financial standpoint it'd be absolutely insane not to release a finished game on as many platforms as possible as soon as possible. What, exactly, would they be gaining by waiting?

Worms W.M.D will see a slight delay with the Linux version
By Nyamiou, 14 July 2016 at 12:02 am UTC

Quoting: c927776If there is a delay with Linux version it means that Linux version was afterthought which means that original source is optimized for Windows and "port" will be bad as usual.
Not necessary, it could mean that they were in the last part of development but very late and since they didn't want to delay the release they decided to focus on fixing Windows-only issues and doing only testing on Windows to be able to release Windows on date and then be able to release Linux later when enough fixing and testing is done on that platform as well.

Right, true cross-platform development and same-day releases are the goal.

The game seems interesting, nerdy, and weird. Seeing as at least two of those adjectives are often used to describe yours truly, I guess I've got no choice but to try it.

This game looks really cool. Seeing "extremely challenging" and "action" in the description leave me unsure if it's for me, but points for artistic direction anyway.

Action adventure Buck is back on Kickstarter with Linux demo, plus crowdfunding round-up
By flesk, 13 July 2016 at 10:02 pm UTC

Found another pair of interesting campaigns:

BFF or Die - Co-op stage puzzler for 1-4 players. Has an alpha demo on itch.io that I played a while back. I played it alone (one character per stick on a gamepad, if I remember correctly), but it seemed like a game that would be most fun with local co-op.

Beans: The Coffee Shop Simulator - It is what it sounds like—a coffee shop tycoon, where you manage your coffee shops and train your staff to unlock new coffee drinks that they can make.

A couple more good games on Itch:

https://woofycakes.itch.io/blue-revolver-v05
https://w84death.itch.io/tanks-of-freedom
https://nihilocrat.itch.io/sky-rogue

These all work, but for Blue Revolver you'll want to download the experimental one since the Itch client doesn't deal with .love files correctly.

QuoteI don't really understand why developers can't wait ~two months just to release them altogether, I find it a bit odd, but they must have their reasoning.
For a small developer the reasoning seems obvious. You want your product out of the door and making money as soon as it's finished.
Then surly you want it out on more platforms right away to get even more money? Same logic ;)
Sure, if all platforms were ready at the same time. Seems like they weren't though. No reason to sit on the Windows version while Aaron works on the Linux port.

Shen’s Last Gift DLC for XCOM 2 released for Linux

Quoting: Mountain ManThis is the first DLC that actually looks like it's worth the admission price.

Also, the performance improvements in the patch, while seemingly minor, could have a big impact, especially the one bug that was apparently causing some effects to render twice per frame.

Performance improvements would be great!

So this DLC adds part of what XCOM:Enemy Within added, minus the genetically enhanced soldiers and other stuff that EW had. I wonder if next we'll get the enhanced soldiers, too.

Yeah, still waiting for the complete game and hoping it will end up being a coherent, flowing game instead of a mess with all these little DLCs all over. I hope they fall into place to create the full picture of what this game is supposed to be.
You can already change soldiers with mind powers, has been in XCOM 2 since day 1. They are Psi Operative soldiers.

There is a lot of cruft on it due to the low barrier of entry, their sorting options generally help you find the good stuff though.

Isn't it ironic that this seems to be both a pro and con to Linux? I spend so much time browsing github, AUR and other package repositories just to figure out what exists that I can use on Arch Linux.

I dunno if I have any more hours in my day to now sift through Itch.io catalog, unless anyone has a pro tip on how to quickly sift through to their good games?

I sure hope so, that was my favorite part of Enemy Within!

Every time I'd gene mod someone my brain would start concocting these stories about how on earth, after the war had been won, these veteran soldiers would integrate back into civilian life: the man who could leap three stories in a single bound. The woman who could sense other creature's electromagnetic fields. The person with two hearts, or the one able to make rage-inducing pheromones. Would these genetic modifications be passed on to their kids, or would it require additional Meld to do so? So much rich food for thought…

If your looking at it from the perspective of ' have wallet, will buy games ' perspective then yes that's true. The platform does sell content but its more focused around new ideas from total newcomers, the indie scene and collaborative working for game jams ( the web client reflects this much more ). So Steam, GOG might be better suited for your needs until it attracts more main stay developers.

Quoting: liamdaweThere is a lot of cruft on it due to the low barrier of entry, their sorting options generally help you find the good stuff though.

One persons cruft is another persons crystal gem. As above a lot of stuff is WIP or just experimental, that is the idea of the platform its not designed to be a Steam replacement ( yet ). That said, there is some actual cruft too ^_^

it works nice as an alternative to steam, GOG and having proper desktop support vs valves garbage client is welcome.
