XCOM 2 - Alien Hunters thoughts, prepare to get frustrated
By TheRiddick, 23 June 2016 at 7:10 pm UTC

I got XCOM2 now and will say it runs pretty good with AMDGPU-PRO drivers, probably on par with what Liam was getting last night at 1440p (4k works ok also but bit too much screen tearing due to lowfps).

EDIT: After further testing, certain missions like retaliation ones have REAL low FPS even with everything turned off. Bizarre.

I have not been able to access the Steam store yet. I guess it'll have to wait until tomorrow. :(

19 entries on my wishlist, every one of them has some sort of discount.. Mostly thinking of getting the EU4 collection (tho I already have the base game, I'm interested in a few of the DLC's, might as well get the entire package) and/or Tomb Raider.

No daily deals again :(

EDIT: and all of the games on my wishlist either have rubbish deals or aren't out on Linux... That sucks.

Quoting: elsaturninoAnyone know if Shadows of Mordor will work well with a GeForce GTX 950?

I suppose so. I've been playing it in my i3, 4 GB, GTX 650 Ti machine on low-medium settings and 30 fps.

The Long Dark survival game updated with a new skills and feats system

Quoting: GuestSorry if I sound too negative regarding the game. I think it looks really fun; it just gets to me that that bug, that seems well known, soon has its first birthday.

No your not negative. I can see the frustration in waiting for a known bug to be fixed.
And its been known for a while aswell.
I just wanted to point out that, I only get the bug if I tab out of the game for some reason.
Overall the game is very playable.

But if you havent got the game, its probably better to wait, it will probably be more expensiv in time, but you get more content and hopefully no sound bugs when its done.
And if its to expensiv you can always wait for a steam/gog sale.

And I recommend it, its a very good game, and there will be a story mode soon aswell.
At the moment there is only a sandbox mode.

Europa Universalis IV celebrates Midsummer and a million copies sold with a free music DLC

Paradox games don't have a learning curve, it's more of a learning cliff, but once you figure them out, they're terrific games. Unfortunately, Paradox has generally been terrible at explaining how to play their own games, but they're getting better! Each of their more recent games now has a comprehensive Wiki page that makes the learning process much easier than it used to be. Here's the one for Crusader Kings II:

http://www.ckiiwiki.com/Crusader_Kings_II_Wiki

I own Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis IV, Stellaris, and Hearts of Iron IV, and any one of them can easily steal hours of my time.

Paradox seems like a nice studio. This is a nice bonus, I think their support of Linux has really helped Linux gaming, and celebrating International Women's Day (an article I guess I missed) is really nice to hear about given the bad attitudes about women in gaming some loud gamers seem to have. I would like to play their games to support them, but the only game of theirs that I've tried (Crusader Kings) was too much for my puny brain! I guess I just need to try harder!

I havent experience any major sound issues with this game
If I tab the game down and up again I get a problem. But its not like the game is completely broken.
If this happens I can just save and restart the game.

PSA: after updating to the new version on Steam, my progress on the campaign was lost. Needed to revert to the previous version (through the "no editor beta" in the beta tab) to get it back. Not sure if you can do the same with GOG/Humble versions if you happen to have the same problem.

People don't seem to realize that the open PC platform was a fluke of history that would never, ever happen again. There is not a single type of hardware other than PCs that generally allows people to change the OS or install custom software not approved by the vendor.

Yup.
I've heard this before, but I don't believe it's even remotely true. It's just a thing certain experts (and "experts" aka media) like to say, without much basis in reality.

Ashes of the Singularity still plans Vulkan and Linux & SteamOS support

QuoteWhen we speak of Linux support, we mean SteamOS support.
That's an odd distinction when you consider that SteamOS is Linux.

Yeah, but it's a question of customer support. So they can target Vulkan exclusively because SteamOS supports it, even though many distributions of Linux do not. Likewise, Xbox One developers don't have to target Directx9 even though many Windows games do. Game developers don't want to answer every question about every possible Linux configuration. SteamOS is a stable base with a major company behind who can support both users and developers.

Ultimately I think this is a good thing. Vulkan is the way forward for Linux gaming, and issues of support will fade pretty quickly. I'm impressed that Nvidia and AMD have Vulkan support going back for cards 2-3 years old. The aggressive support from hardware vendors should encourage game developers to prioritize the transition.

XCOM 2 - Alien Hunters thoughts, prepare to get frustrated
By Kimyrielle, 23 June 2016 at 2:43 pm UTC Likes: 2

I am not sure why devs don't get that not all people want games to be insanely hard. And when even "Easy" is still anything but, something's wrong. "Easy" means "Don't challenge me, ever!!!", not "A little less frustrating".

A while back I got Remember Me because I liked the story and the fact that the game featured a strong female lead character for a change. I am not good at this sort of game, so I played it on Easy. All I wanted was to see the story. But no, I never really saw it. Like a third into the game, the bosses started to kick my butt so hard that I just couldn't beat them, not even on the easiest available setting. The game didn't have cheat codes either, so it went off my hard drive, because what's the point of a game you can't finish? I don't get the logic of frustrating players. If they set the difficulty to the lowest possible setting, it means a challenge is not what they are after.

I had no clue that XCOM is one of these games that love to frustrate players like that. It will get a kick from my wishlist.

Quoting: GuestAs I mentioned before, I don't mind this, in fact I think it's something SteamOS is quite useful for.
I don't mind it, either, since a static platform is easier to develop for, and if it will work on SteamOS then it will work on any distro (at least in theory), but the way they say it almost makes it sound like SteamOS isn't Linux, when it actually is.
Well, in fact that does tell us that the open source drivers are not going to be supported.
Considering the state of open source graphics drivers, I'm not sure what other choice the developers have.

Quoting: TheRiddickPS. I played XCOM2 beforehand a bit to try it out, but it wasn't an official copy so I deleted it. It had bad fps on the Radeon open driver! (like 15fps with nasty stutter/freeze)
So you admit to playing a pirated copy, and then have the gall to complain about the performance?

I find the reaction a good idea and put more challenge to the game what I dislike is, if I reload my gun, move or shoot at another target, I see no reason to have a reaction trigger. Just that would have been a lot better.

By Benn, 23 June 2016 at 1:31 pm UTC Likes: 1

Thanks for the feedback guys, I agree that the mechanics of the game need to be a little bit clearer so I'm making a gameplay video next to address just that issue ^__^

Flesk is right, you place down what I call magnets to guide the orbs from their emitters to the receivers, with different types of magnets doing different kinds of rotations on the orbs based on their input trajectory.

I'm glad to see the linux community taking an interest in the game and will definitely be working to try and get the game as well supported on the platform as possible :)

I'd imagine that implementing DX12 in Wine (over Vulkan) won't be nearly as hard as DX11. So who knows how quickly that will come.

Quoting: JudasIscariotInterestingly enough the game has a DX12 executable. It will most certainly make for a good time breaking Wine and seeing what kind of horrible nasty things DX12 will want out of Wine :D

Yes, I am fully cognizant of the fact that DX12 is nowhere near supported via Wine but it's interesting nonetheless...

DX12 will not get a OpenGL port according to the devs, if not somebody steps up to do it. It will be a D3D12 to Vulkan port only.
