Subversion no more?

Quoting: "jhansonxi, post: 2513"However Rock Paper Shotgun has reported that Introversion have said they are working on a new game Prison Architect, I wonder if this will support linux?

If it's meant to be an entertaining prison then OS X is the obvious choice. ;)

Captcha: What operating system do we cover?

They have said in one article their will be a Linux version of Prison Architect.

Also i don't hate freedom but most people use the shorter quicker version...hint: Linux hehe ;)
With that in mind the captcha has been updated to allow that answer :)

Unfortunately, Introversion is not the Linux game company it was back in the days.

What about releasing Subversion under an open source version now and seeing what the community comes up with. I'd love to see an early product of this scale under copyleft license for code and a restrictive CC license for the assets.

I can see how that would be easy to do (losing your way) when you're working on a project part-time for that long. It's been difficult enough to stay focused on Dirk 2 for 3 years. I've had to take some breaks along the way to work on other smaller game projects, and come back to it fresh.

Strange why is it a sad day? A linux port has been confirmed previously and now we have an ETA, i'm not bothered which platforms it will arrive on first, being in a minority i'm glad of the support.

We did not get Trine for Linux until over a year after it was released for Windows, and now we are winging that we have to wait a few months for Trine 2? I really do not understand it...

A little post about their thoughts on multiplayer and how they're considering making it work:
http://frozenbyte.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3615#p15290

TBH I think it seems too complicated with all the different multiplayers. Personally I would just stick with a standalone multiplayer which did not require Steam.

I am really starting to get annoyed now by people complaining about the lack of same day Linux ports. As long as we get it eventually, I am happy with the world, and saying "oh, then it is never going to come" is just hurting our platform and hurting morale.

As far as Trine 2 goes, you should remember that the port is not done by them, but Alternative Games, so it makes a certain amount of sense it will take a little longer. In many ways this is a GOOD thing, as we get a version already beaten into shape by players triggering bugs on other platforms, not to mention what will be found while it is being ported.

Try looking on the bright side for once... what, did UT3 scar us all for life?

tbh, I think it will be released on linux, they did trine 1 so with that basis trine 2 should not be as hard. they will come through, and I do understand why the windows/mac first, its where they make their money.

It's sad to see another "maybe next year" statement. I hope Desura for Linux will be a success and will attract more AAA game publishers.

Postal 3, not yet, but maybe in the future
By Hamish, 28 October 2011 at 9:01 pm UTC

Looks like they are going for Plan B, just got a message from RWS (I'm on their mailing list now?) that they got a deal to publish the game on Steam in December alongside the Russian release in November.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/10220/

Once those two are out of the way, they will probably get someone in for the Linux and Mac ports (noticing that Mac is not currently listed on the Steam page). Based on Vince's comments, they will probably try and hand that job over to Ryan Gordon again (he did do the Mac and Linux ports for Postal 2 after all, so it would be fitting for him to do the Postal III ones as well).

I notice how the console ports are still up in the air as to how they will be handled as well, with the message stating that the game will be "Initially available in PC format, deals are already in motion to bring the game to console format." So we are not the only ones without firm details available yet.

Postal 3, not yet, but maybe in the future
By Hamish, 19 October 2011 at 7:54 pm UTC

I think Postal 3 will still come, Vince is a good man and does not try to disappoint. I also do not see why Source is any different than Unreal was back in the day (remember, Unreal Warfare only had Direct3D on Windows, though it did have an OpenGL renderer available for developers). So if Ryan was able to port that, he or someone like him can port Source. It is not like it needs Steamwoks or anything.

Also remember, that the November 3rd release date only seems to refer to the original Russian release date, which I am guessing Akella will be doing themselves anyway. That is how they got involved in Postal III's development, they published the original Postal games in Russian, and RWS was impressed that they were one of the few publishers with the balls and the diginity not to screw them over (anyone play Apocalpyse Weekend? :p).

So at the this point, a North American release is still up in the air, let alone a release for Linux and Mac and the like. And remember what the man himself told me in February, which gives a whole new light to this situation:
Quote Like you and yours we are anxious and frustrated. I hate saying Shit [I'm] not sure about but I will share with you what I know. It looks like May if all goes well. We are hopeful to reach a distribution deal at GDC and worse case we go [direct download] and will find another team [for] Linux.

Well, we all know that a May release did not happen, mostly because Akella was still not comfortable that the game was ready quite yet, but now they are and it does not seem like RWS was able to find someone willing to work with them. So, that may very well leave them with Plan B, go digital download to just get the damn thing out there, and then get "another team for Linux". So yes, it is coming, but when you are one of the most hated developers in the world, it is not going to be easy. But Vince is a good man. And he will make it happen.

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 2479"it won't happen, sorry, if the engine your using does not run on linux then that's it. You really think they gone port the source engine to linux for their game, if anybody then it should be valve doing that.

Agreed i dont think it will come.

It would need to be valve porting it as its their code.

As somebody who has worked with Both Unigine script and Lua based engines - I have to call BS on that one. Uniginescript isn't particularly harder to work with. It's an algol family language like C,C++,D,Java,Ecmascript(javascript). It is not really any more difficult to use than say using Javascript to make a dynamic web page. It is close enough to C++ use a C++ IDE including syntax highlighting and code completion.

Having an Aesthetic preference for one language over another is one thing. But calling either a nightmare is indulging in a conciderable amount of hyperbole

Why do you call it a waste of a license?

It's not suitable for us currently. Before we won the license we had no idea what the engine is about. Would you want for us to spend 5 years in development with Unigine and then switch back to DP engine or UDK ? :)
Unigine is powerful, multiplatform, but not without weaknesses. It's scripting is horrible IMO. They should have went with Lua or something similar, not with C++ like scripting nightmare.

Quoting: "motorsep, post: 2473"We are still prototyping, but went far enough to say that it will be a dungeon crawler, with randomly generated dungeons, towns, crafting, magic, trading, quests, demos, etc. in first person view :)
The video is showing an outdoor area test with Darkplaces engine. Very raw. We just trying to keep you guys posted on almost every step of the development.
Unigine is not suited well for indies. I mean, coding for it using their script is a nightmare, because one has to be a skilled C++ coder. There is no way to get 3D models / levels out of Blender into Unigine and the exporter isn't coming any time soon. Plus out tech support will expire pretty soon, and that means no updates for the engine and no help if we get stuck with their "evil" scripting.

But you did win a license, right?
Is it just going to waste? (-:

I am perfectly happy with you continuing using the GPLed DarkPlaces engine. ;)
randomly generated dungeons
I would have preferred well designed levels and a good story, even if it's linear... :/
Oh well, still looking forward to what comes out of it. :)
