Building a Retro Linux Gaming Computer - Part 2: Selecting a Graphics Card
9 Mar 2021 at 10:08 pm UTC

Hmmm, this article makes me think that I should look at what I have in stock, I mostly have all the original boxes of my GPUs. Today I found my Asus AX 800XT box (the card is in a customized Antec SX1240 case).

I think I can make a small fortune and free some space ;)

I know I have a Voodoo Banshee, an Ultra TNT 2, an SLI of ASUS 8800 GTX and their waterblocks, a Zalman reserator 2 and XT with brand new (in sealed boxes) chipset's waterblocks also from Zalman.

Some sound blaster cards (with external modules for audigy series).

At the time all my PC where using SCSI adapters from adaptec (U160, U320) with 10k rpm HDD and Yamaha ODD.

My computer journey is already from 30 years ago and I'm 41 ^^

You need to put a 3dfx Voodoo card in that setup.

But I'm not sure if it is a retro build or just an old build. To me retro is more the era before the Pentium.

I still have around 286, 386, 486 DX2/66, Pentium II and Pentium III machines. But I ditched all the CRT monitors.

Quoting: slaapliedjeHa, you triple told him!

Let's not forget the lack of resource eating software that likes to sit in the background on Windows, a driver / software model that doesn't ask for a reboot every time, etc.

I had to uninstall and reinstall with several reboots in between, my Thurstmaster Warthog last night just so I could play some Elite: Dangerous in VR... I should try to tear apart their scripting engine and try to port it to Linux...
Hmm, when I posted it, the UI was unresponsive and nothing happened (or so I thought).

That is one of the most irritating pain for me, the lack of support for some peripherals. (Logitech if you can hear me…).

Mice are ok now with piper or solaar but my G13 is a pain in the ass even if now it is somewhat working (and I love it because it is an ortholinear keyboard).

Quoting: AkonadyI wanna know something not related specifically to this game but with games in general.

What do you feel like playing on Linux (not native games), losing lots of fps, basically wasting the full potential of your hardware?
In a sense you are right, I use way less RAM on Linux than on Win 7.

Quoting: BogomipsSounds nice, indeed.
But for me, after the last update, the -hwcursor launch parameter does not seem to work anymore.
If you've got sensitivity problems, there's a script by the porter in the respective Steam thread. He says Unity has changed behaviour without notice (and that it does so often)...
This update has now rolled out.
Just tried it and it works again
