It's hard to believe but Counter-Strike has turned 20 and it's still going strong

I closed my CS:S public server 2 weeks ago after 7 years (it was mainly $2000$), I only made 1 map a long time ago ($20$ yes I know not original at all…) but we developed a ton of plugins and a client with a friend to monitor our server remotely and prevent bad behaviours with automated responses/actions/alarms.

Quoting: barottoThat's nice.Quoting: BogomipsBut, to put oil on fire, I do not really consider CS:GO as a real CS, I only play competitive and with friends. We don't play CS:GO either. We play CS:Source on a custom map made by me, but nowadays just a couple of games per lan party.

Quoting: barottoPlayed the beta back in the day with a bunch of friends during LAN parties.Nice! Same here and almost never stopped and with the same friends :P
Fast forward 20 years and we still play it!

My connection is so slow that I don't know if I will be able to play tonight… Back to Poly Bridge 2 ;)
Edit: after around 4 hours of puzzles, the game is really nice! But I'm not sure if it is a good or bad idea to play when really tired ^^

Steam Play Proton 5.13-1 Linux compatibility layer up and ready for testing

And I managed to fully finish the game with friends in coop (before the last 2 DLCs of the season pass) with only lags because of streaming textures when loading new areas (so annoying 30 seconds where nothing can be done at 10 fps while friends had no problems at all) to achieve a 70 fps when everything was loaded on medium to low settings with my setup.
So it was a pain at first but decently playable afterwards, so, not just few tricks but not unachievable either if instructions were followed properly.
Once again for me and mileage may vary a lot and I haven't really played since then, I can just confirm that the network is still available and the game can start and load but I haven't tried the transitions with video playback with the new proton…

Quoting: NanobangI had network's problems at first but I solved them somehow between starting other borderlands games and connecting to the SHiFT network and switching back to Proton 4 at the time.Quoting: BogomipsNever had real problems with borderlands 3 once everything is set (mf-install/cab and proton 4).The big --- and ongoing --- hitch for me has been the lack of online play, unless that's been fixed and I missed it. I'm not really sure what constitutes a 'Gold' rating on ProtonDB nowadays. I couldn't find a current set of definitions at PDB just now.
A 'Gold' rating used to mean that a game ran perfectly with just a few tweaks, whereas a 'Silver' rating was something like the game was playable after tweaks but still had issues. Lack of online play and continuing complaints of stuttering would rate Borderlands 3 a 'Silver' by that reckoning.
At some point I'll be able to play it on my Linux box, of that I feel certain. ;)

Quoting: NanobangHere's hoping that this fixes Borderlands 3 at last!Never had real problems with borderlands 3 once everything is set (mf-install/cab and proton 4).
Just kidding, there's no hope of that. LOL! It's as messed up as its gold rating on ProtonDB [External Link].
I'm crying inside.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive gets fancy new skins, networking improvements

I spent a lot of time in previous versions of CS reviewing recorded demos of "strange" behaviour but at that time cheaters were not really subtle/skilled so most of the reviews were just good/lucky players.
I was often mistaken for a cheater (and I never cheated in my life) and I wasn't that good so I can understand that some people could be pissed off in casual games.
Now, I don't have a lot of time to play, so if it is not fun because of toxicity I just don't bother and do something else…

Quoting: dudeNo, not in CS:GO.Quoting: BogomipsWhen I pre-ordered CSGO I just played few hours and didn't touched it for years. Now I only play in competitive with friends only in my team and Danger Zone that is not bad but was really buggy at the time on linux. Then you didn't overwatch any player/cheater in CS:GO, right?
Overwatch takes time, but is also fun. You will be rewarded fo giving good reports. However, you must play many matches to get to overwatch.
What is ridiculous, that another game got named "overwatch".

I was so annoyed years ago with CS source that I started to rent a server and we developed a lot of plugins and client console with a friend to monitor players, so when flagged it was really hard to come back (IP and steamID blacklist, back up of scores to avoid abuse reconnects, monitoring of weapons to prevent full auto, monitoring of network stability to prevent lag on purpose etc.) and the rules were clear.
Also, the fun was in the tons of dedicated servers with specific mods/community.
When I pre-ordered CSGO I just played few hours and didn't touched it for years. Now I only play in competitive with friends only in my team and Danger Zone that is not bad but was really buggy at the time on linux.
So to me, CSGO is not a Counter-Strike game it is just something else and I can enjoy it that way.
Edit: PS: My audio communication layer is completely disabled in game, so I never hear any of the players talking (because muting players one by one it way too annoying) and it is really nice that way.

Quoting: dudeYes, you can mute them or report them but it is still annoying and I am not even sure something is really done (I have played counter-strike since the beta in 1999).Quoting: DerpFox[...] I tried to play Go again a couple month ago and it didn't felt like a CS any more, it just reminded of some bad CoD rip off. A lot of things didn't felt right.No. WTF.
After 3000 hours in CSGO I must disagree. You can mute toxic players. You can report em. Couter-Strike made some great progress during the last years. Still top notch, there is only one problem: the skill goes away with the years.

What I would love to see/have is an ortholinear keyboard option from laptop's manufacturers or a third party replacement so I could stop carrying mine everywhere. Blank keycaps are fine with me.
