The SaveTF2 campaign to get Valve to beat the Team Fortress 2 bots has begun

You would think if the problem was that serious, that Valve would have put a bit more developer time on it by now.
As a Counter-Strike player, I wouldn't think that at all.

Valve COO on Epic's Tim Sweeney "you mad bro?" when launching the Epic Store

Quoting: MalQuite the opposite actually. Madbro literally proved to the world that 30% is the right cut. He has shown with his own very feats that it is not possible to offer a better service than Steam with a lower cut. At this point any smart developer should rally behind Valve.
I disagree. Steam has shown that it IS possible to offer a better service while taking a smaller cut, since that's absolutely what they did themselves!

Quoting: ToddLIf only GOG had the same amount of games that Steam has would there be good competition. Too bad they have a fraction of the Steam library of games but their DRM-free feature is pretty nice though
That's what I mean! Selling games that are free from DRM is a compelling feature! And in fact, I have spent money in GoG's store. I haven't bought a single game in EGS.

Sweeney is correct. Valve's cut was (and is, to a slightly lesser extent) quite greedy and their immature trolling does make them assholes.

Where Sweeney is wrong is his thinking that all gamers want or need is a platform to buy, download, and update games from. I really wanted to see some competition in the space, but EGS's execution just plain doesn't cut it. There's not a single compelling reason to use it over Steam, but on the contrary lacks many features that Steam has accumulated over the years. I don't even like Steam particularly!

But once you factor in the Linux experience, it's a no-brainer. Epic has been extremely hostile to Linux. Their purchase of Psyonix/Rocket League is still fresh in my mind, where they abruptly ended Linux native builds. There was no need. So much for looking out for the little guy.

Sweeney can whine about the Valve tax all day. But if a game I wanted came out on both Steam and EGS, and the price on Steam was 30% more, I know which one I'd buy.

League of Legends likely unplayable on Linux / Steam Deck soon due to Vanguard anti-cheat

Comedy gold.

From a security point of view supporting WINE would be like having a bank vault at the top of Nakatomi Tower then installing a doggy door in it.
Vanguard will not be required for Mac.
Bunch of clowns over at Riot. At least Dota runs on Linux, unlike CS2.

Counter-Strike 2 is out now with Linux support

Really seems like Valve should have been testing on Linux. There's no reason the issues I've encountered couldn't be resolved before launch.

"-sdlaudiodriver pipewire" launch option fixed audio for me. Would really love it if the game launched on my primary display. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix that, I'm all ears. I'm using XFCE/Xfwm4.

I normally prefer to have the number pad, but this will suit me nicely on my second desk which is considerably smaller. Ordered.

FACEIT Anti-Cheat to support Linux / Steam Deck with BattleBit Remastered

Quoting: ElectricPrismIt's more probable that anti-cheat is intended to be malware to spy on people -- after all -- WHY NOT only run it when connecting to gaming servers -- why does it need to be running the whole time a game is open?
General laziness. Hanlon's razor might apply here.

Linux hit over 3% desktop user share according to Statcounter

I think this is also helped by the fact that young people are using desktops much less generally.

Nintendo Switch emulator yuzu gets a huge performance boost
12 May 2023 at 10:16 pm UTC Likes: 5

To add to the great points already made in this thread, it's also important from a preservation standpoint to be concerned with improving the quality of emulation while the console being emulated is still in the mainstream. The current gen emulators tend to benefit from rapid development, so it's a good thing for the sake of the project to take advantage of that while the hardware is still being sold. The alternative is protecting poor Nintendo from the boogieman that is software piracy and hoping that people still care about emulating the Switch after it's EOL.
