Why We Shouldn't Accept Bad Linux Ports

Why we think it's eON?

And then like Samsai said, the base game shouldn't have changed between the Windows version and the wrapped version. The fact that even some people get an extra 20fps perf on WINE over the eON wrapper when eON is specifically targeted for Witcher 2 is just mindblowing.
"The toolkit used to port doesn't matter" - you mean it doesn't matter in regards to end-result perf? Because it DOES matter if the toolkit is the thing causing the bad perf. And from what we can see, it's eON (the toolkit) that's causing the bad perf for many people. This is why Liam said it's naive to think that the toolkit doesn't matter.
Edit: I personally don't buy really expensive games and got it only because it was on sale for $4. Whether it was worth it or not depends on if I can play it on Linux, and right now I'm leaning on downloading from GoG and using WINE instead. 15GB steam download wasted, unless they push updates.
Edit2: http://steamcommunity.com/app/20920/discussions/0/522728268811804386/ [External Link] see this for some fixes if you're running the steam/eON version.

I thought the sale was a good deal, and getting it on GoG is a great bonus =D
The perf is killing my experience though.
I mean, icculus' ports [External Link] (native) are a lot more on-par with their Windows counterparts than this Witcher 2, and I doubt the devs of those games had Linux as a target platform in mind when they made the game.
I don't mind that they use a wrapper AS LONG AS IT WORKS. I had to go through so many fixes before I could even play this, like symlinking steam runtime libraries (shouldn't steam/the game automatically do this?) and using alsa instead of pulse to get the video to work =S. Then, because of the bad perf, I get low framerates and laptop overheating (I gotta disassemble and clean it out again sometime =P) I can't play. Have yet to try Windows or GoG-Wine versions though.

Quoting: ImantsI don't think we can ask developers to make quality ports to such a old gameswhether a game is old or not isn't really the issue imho - unless the engine you're working on in your newer game supports Linux (in which case all 'major' engines do).

While I'm mostly too scared to keep playing xD (and probably boot Windows a couple of times this year to muck about in the Star Citizen hangar), I was happy when I read the title, but then if I had to buy it again at full price, no dice. Probably only get it if it was heavily discounted, especially for pre-owners!

The steam client is on Ubuntu and according to the last question http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/648814395741989999/ [External Link] devs were told to build for Ubuntu (on the Steam Runtime), which apparently would work on any distro as long as it's got Steam Runtime installed (and the Steam client is officially supported on Ubuntu 12.04).
So it's perfectly normal to build and test on Ubuntu. I just take issue with the DE =P KDE user myself. Of course, I've said this in the RSI forum's Linux thread =) So go subscribe on that thread if you're a fellow citizen! xD

Went back to the light theme, there's something weird about the dark theme and it being not as good contrast-wise. Also, white text (link to people) in quotes (which are white background) fail.
You need to make the blacks/darks darker for better contrast. The background still seems to "glow". A good example of dark background themes with visible text is the Star Citizen/RSI website, so go surf that =)

FYEAH!!!
I found this out on the Star Citizen forums and PAX recording before coming here but YESS!! I had to come here to express my excitement too =) Thanks Liam! Just a tip, if you had time you could have embedded/linked the source for a better article!
Also about pricing, yes Linux games are usually cheaper. Yes, there's rarely games that are AAA in terms of quality and budget on Linux, and Star Citizen is probably AAAA in terms of features and quality imho so it's totally worth it (and savings from having no publisher pass onto us, as well as feed more dev monies!). Yes, Linux gamers are willing to spend a lot of money as seen in Humble Bundle. Yes, the rise of Linux is now! >=D
Quotes (copied from the Linux thread in RSI forums) [External Link]: "(...) by the way, we'll gonna be supporting Linux."
"We'll be on Linux (...) we like it. I think most engineers will tell you that they prefer Linux (...) to Windows actually, especially in the back-end server world." during the QA, right after the ill-informed Sony guy.
1st quote is at 21:45 (already skipped to in that video link above by Jörmungandur.
2nd quote is at 45:20 (question & answer). CR also says "all the major engines are supporting Linux" at [47:25]. =)
(video is embedded above by two other ppl).

It's a good game got it from the humble bundle, I like the gameplay - requiring good skills. Final boss was also really hard to beat too which was good. One of the better story driven small indie games out there (my favourite of which is Bastion). KSP and Star Citizen don't count in that category.
Didn't know how they'd continue the story but then I read wikipedia and was like .. oh.

Found it. Thanks! =) Yeah, I remember hearing that somewhere before, a lot of the Steam Dev Days videos are really interesting! I watched quite a few of them.
They say their engine still has D3D centric stuff from its heritage but they'd like to move away from that (see the slide as well).
