Origin PC Is No Longer Doing A SteamOS Steam Machine

Quoting: Purple Library Guy
Quoting: SoltrummanMy guess is that Alienware looks at the market and sees a opportunity. People that want a gaming PC but do not want to admin and update a Windows PC.
I had not thought about the relatively hassle-free maintenance of Linux. That is indeed an advantage over Windows on a console-like machine.
Normally if you have a PC dedicated to the TV/couch, you should be able to turn on automatic updates and not worry about maintenance. Tbh I think the maintenance should be about the same - Linux users also need to turn on automatic updates, and if you aren't on a rolling release, nvidia drivers might not get updated to latest major versions (e.g. Ubuntu distro PPAs).

One significant advantage I can think of is the ~$120 or so OEM Windows licence price being knocked off the RRP (or added to the manufacturer's margin).

Of course if you're like me and install other stuff and dual boot into Linux, sometimes your Windows clugs up (BSOD), or fails to boot and you have "reformat Windows partition" on your todo list for a year (haven't had to use it on my laptop yet).

My Own Thoughts On The Steam Controller, Flawed, But Fun

Waiting for it to be sold in the land down-under.

As someone who uses trackballs normally (even for precision gaming) and doesn't like the analog sticked gamepads for FPS, I'd really want to try it out! Can't wait till they ship to Australia!

Whooo! Go anonymous reader! More Linux comrades in arms =P
(Also I think you could've picked it up for like $1.00 last humble bundle guys. I had it before the humble bundle though, like 1 year ago just waiting for it to arrive on Linux xD)

X3: Reunion, X3: Albion Prelude And X3: Terran Conflict Now DRM Free On GOG

I'd love to have it in my GOG library, but I already have it on Steam ... and I'm a cash-strapped student so I don't want to buy it again. =(

Also they should make Galaxy easier to install on Linux (can't find the client from their website).

Concluding our first ever Game Jam
10 Nov 2015 at 9:41 am UTC

Congrats! Great to hear from the devs on what they thought their experience doing the game jam was like!

The end result was pretty different from the way I ranked the games, but it was great to see the participation!
I think the ranking system meant each of the different categories had equal weight, so developers should probably be let known the criteria for ranking/marking beforehand (like if your game didn't have any -even just 1- sound, that's an instant 1/5 for sound vs. 3/5 to 4/5 for 1 or 2 sounds). Personally I'd have liked to vote on an "overall" score for each game which wasn't necessarily the averages of the other categories' scores.

I'm pretty sure you'd get a lot of page views if your were to post a noob friendly guide on installing Kodi [External Link]. As many people expect to use their console as a media centre nowadays.
Heartily agreed! I used to boot Kodi (then XBMC) then realised I got more functionality booting into Xubuntu and running Kodi as an app - it's a great app! I got the added bonus of a proper web browser (Firefox/Chrome), and file browser and VLC.

Apart from Kodi, I'd also really like to see what file browser, web browsers and media players (incl image viewers) are on SteamOS!
One question though @liamdawe , why not dual boot and default to booting SteamOS in GRUB, instead of wiping your Ubuntu? Is it not possible? Or you just wanted a cleaner fully dedicated SteamOS box?

Re: Rome II - even though I heard it was a step down gameplay-wise from TW:Rome which I absolutely loved, I've got it, though according to that announcement they seem to be more than 1 year behind schedule ...

GOL Cast: Destroying Frakloads Of Toasters In Diaspora: Shattered Armistice

I also really liked the game! Especially the landing, feels like I'm really a Viper pilot from BSG!

Was really frustrating though because I couldn't get past a level (maybe one of the last ones), where you had to down a few Base-stars, protect your ship and stuff (it was a few strung-together parts too), but it kept crashing during the level =( The sad part is, it was hard to get up to the different parts in the level, and then the game would crash randomly. Still haven't finished, couldn't get past it. #blamecrashesfornotwinning

Insurgency FPS Now Officially Available On Linux
28 Oct 2015 at 5:11 am UTC

Trailer has penguins. I have waited a year for this. My body is ready but not my GPA with exams coming up.
Psyched to do some shooting, looks more BF/ARMA than CS with good gameplay in my books.

EDIT: procrastinated, so can say: good replay value, feels more forgiving than CS (in CS I just keep getting 1-hit), especially with the interesting loadout system so it's not dependent on who's winning but rather your class. Definitely good gameplay for using teamwork and tactics, otherwise you can get destroyed - especially checking lines of fire and covering all sides. It's realistic in that if you just run around like UT/Quake style, you'll die when someone sees you in the open, and you'll never even know who hit you from where. Lots of game modes and nice coop. Good aim down sights system with lean too. Quite addictive actually, fun gameplay!
