Quoting: liamYoutubers, surprised you haven't heard of him.
I've heard the name, I just pay zero attention to "youtubers". There's so much good, well crafted and professionally produced content to watch and consume in this world that I feel bad for never getting around to see, so I definitely have no time for "youtubers".

Quoting: tuubiHey, the overwhelming majority of games "journalism" is done by amateurs and hobbyists.
This is true, if one count all outlets as "journalism".

For me (and I wish, for all people) journalism is a craft. It's an education (three years here in Norway). There is a difference between a journalist and an amateur with a keyboard or a mic. The amateur might be good with words or charismatic in front of his (web)cam, but the core of journalism is missing. It must be learnt.

Quoting: tuubiThe articles on this site as well, I'd assume.
This is a gaming blog, and Liam has never tried to pretend to be anything more than what he is. That is all good. I have nothing against blogs, or amateurs in general (if they are nice people).
And in regards to journalistic standards there are far, far worse examples out there - plenty of them - than anything you might find here. At least this site has integrity (and no sponsors/sponsored content, that helps too, with no temptations dangling in front of your nose).
GOL is definitely one of the better "non-professional" sites out there, simply cause the guys here do not pretend to be anything they are not, and create actual, genuine content.

Add to that a fantastic community and you got a winner.

Quoting: tuubiNot that harmful when it's pretty much all opinion anyway.
And this is what the amateur operators thrive on, "it's all opinion anyway so why isn't my opinion as good as anyone elses". And their audience buy that.
Problem is, journalism is not about opinion. Never was. And I wish there were more journalism within gaming media. Not just amateurs who believe their opinions are just as valid as anybody elses.

Quoting: tuubiI'm more concerned with the rest of the media, where even previously highly reputable news outlets are rapidly losing their standards.
They are challenged indeed, but I put that blame on the amateurs too. They almost force through low journalistic standards with their poor fact-checking and sloppy, left handed work. If that is the competition, what can serious publishers do to meet that competition?

Quoting: Yu0On consoles you just buy a game, put it in the device and play. No further thinking required, which I count as a bonus after a day at work. No thinking if a game is available for that OS (you wouldn't own it otherwise), or how to optimize graphics settings for a good FPS vs quality. Upgrades are trivial too, as the only upgrade path is buying a newly released console.

Add to this, that Steam machines will never give the same price/performance as consoles up front, as the latter are subsidized by game sales and can have games much more optimized due to entirely uniform hardware, than what is possible for PCs.
This is the core of console advantages that the PC gamers must comprehend for at all to be qualified to enter any discussion about consoles. Without this understanding one is not equipped to even have a valid opinion.

It's about user experience, not an "ability to think". That is nothing else than an elitist excuse for ones own struggles with settings, drivers, hardware, tweaks and hassle.

The vast majority who are eligible to purchase a Steam Machine, purchase this machine not to get a PC to tinker with, but a console to use like how they use their blu-ray players, TVs and stereo equipment. They don't purchase TV sets that just works "because they are unable to think", but because of the user experience. They want a box that works. Period. Else, they'll go buy a PC instead and get themselves a quite expensive and time consuming hobby instead.

And if they are sadists, they install Linux on that box. ;)

Quoting: adolsonI am not familiar with this YouTuber's body of work
"youtubers"... :-D
Do yourself a favour and trust them like you trust advertisement pamphlets or "bloggers".
They are amateurs trying to grab a piece of the media landscape, and do all the errors and mistakes that uneducated people do. Especially when there's money involved.

The Last Federation Gets A New Expansion, The Lost Technologies

Oh, it may be both good and different. But still, it's strategy. And if we lump the strategy genres together, from tower defense to strategic rpg'ish stuff, from turnbased to realtime, from boards to puzzles, we get a bag so full of titles that every other genre becomes exotic in comparison.

I don't really complain, luckily there's still releases for the rest of us, I just gaze at it in wonder. Are we - PC gamers - really that obsessed with strategy games?
Well, I guess we are, since they keep rolling out. "The proof is in the pudding", as they say.
