How-to: upscale old games on Linux

Quoting: MayeulCI'm considering buying a monitor with strobed backlight to imitate this (AKA blur reduction, or ULMB).
Is this something like the flickery backlight dimming on some panels? Because that messes me up quite bad. Cannot look at it for more than a few seconds.

Quoting: DuncI'm seriously considering going back to a CRT.
No, thank you. I'm quite happy those are getting extinct. I remember having a 19" CRT monitor back in the day, which was huge. And I don't mean the screen estate, which was quite amazing back in the day, but it was the size of a goddamn minifridge. :dizzy:

Quoting: heidi.wengerCould it be possible to integrate somehow, someday to Lutris?
Cannot imagine it ever will. While it is cool, it is basically a hack. Not something for general purpose use.

This is cool. Didn't know about xpra before. Although this will definitely reduce performance, because the script starts a virtual X server via xvfb, which is non-accelerated, and neither is xephyr as far as I know. Not that it matters for pinball.

One thing that would be interesting to try is starting another real X server, and then using xpra to connect to that.

Wonder what is this all about?

yep been playing Euro Truck Simulator 2 a lot lately... my brain is overloaded with the covid19 news.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 is great. I am planning to visit my hometown during the Easter holidays.

DiRT Rally gives me the same anxiety as driving a real car. That's how you know it's good.

Seems Valve do intend to go back to SteamOS at some point

Quoting: scaineIt could a rolling release under the hood, but it'll still be controlled by Valve, assuming they do it "the console way".
I think something like CoreOS [External Link] or RancherOS [External Link] is more likely. Just download a minimal OS image as a single blob and overwrite the whole thing. No dependencies, no update breakage. Just like flashing firmware. They are already working on containerizing the games, so they can ship all the dependencies alongside the game, and not have to worry about system dependencies.

Another possibility is using Steam itself for downloading system files. They already have a way to quickly and reliably download large chunks of data, and Proton downloads are "system" files in a way already. There is nothing preventing them from writing data to /usr instead of your home directory. Well, you'd have to tweak the security model, but there are solutions for that like SELinux.

This is all speculation. A semi-educated one.

Don't waste your time flaming then. Do something useful instead. If you can't figure out what DRM is, it's not anyone else's problem.
That's no way to greet a new member.

The world is not black and white, and not everything is about being pro-DRM or anti-DRM. There are many valid reasons for Feral not to publish their ports on GOG. Besides what has already been mentioned, supporting multiple distribution channels is more work. It's not just uploading their stuff, they actually have to build and maintain a separate flavour of the game.

GOG does not provide any runtime with libraries, like Steam does, so they would have to manage all the dependencies, and ensure compatibility between different Linux distributions themselves.

Updates also need to be handled separately. And because GOG Galaxy is not on Linux, there is no easy way to distribute the updates to the users, leading to possibly incompatible versions of the game being in the wild. Which also creates more support overhead.

Feral is a business, and their employees need to eat. You cannot expect them to just do it no matter the cost.

Also there may be things that we are completely unaware of, like contractual obligations, and licensing terms. I am sure it is difficult enough for Feral to convince the publishers to allow a Linux version in the first place, without them trying to impose their own terms, like publishing DRM-free on GOG.

It's easy enough to just demand things. But please try to be a bit more tolerant and understanding. If you really want to promote DRM-free and Linux, your effort is much better spent on the original publisher. Not the company that is already doing their part.

Evolution might not be a thing of beauty, but it gives me access to all my mails, calendars, contacts, etc. via Exchange Web Services, Gmail, etc. and it just works most of the time, even with 2-factor authentication. It can also open IMAP mailboxes with gigabytes of messages that make Thunderbird choke.

I have not yet seen anything remotely as feature-complete as Evolution in the area, and consider it an essential tool in my office-survival kit. I sure wish it received more love, because it surely deserves it. <3
