Quoting: hardpenguinDisclaimer - GDevelop is free and open source however the default build of the editor will add GDevelop watermark or splash screen to the game.

It can be removed by either paying for their subscription or, as I understand, compiling it on your own from the source.

This is a legitimate business tactic that does not violate open source principles at all.
Yeah absolutely nothing wrong with it. Being open source doesn't mean they can't do things in their own product. I think it's a perfectly fine to show a splash screen of the tool.
Well, I would prefer it to have it both optional, and show some message telling the game developer why they really should leave the splash screen where it is (making little PR for something good). The game developers probably are able to just recompile the thing, but the engine developers seem to make it feel like cheating.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIn general, the idea that just individually behaving well can create change is overblown. And in fact, it has often been pushed by large corporations precisely because they are aware it will not work; so they invented individual "carbon footprints" to divert people's attention away from regulation or creation of different infrastructure, emphasize recycling plastic so people won't think about mandating alternatives to plastic, and in general emphasize individual action as consumers so people won't think about political action as citizens.
People shouldn't lean too far in the other direction either, though. Some people think we cannot do anything because The Markets or The System... In the end, it all consists of humans. Though some way more powerful than others, obviously.

Dolphin Emulator devs give up on Steam release

Quoting: Purple Library GuyThere are some anti-consumer behaviours which are clearly profitable and hardly any for-profit firm will avoid, like planned obsolescence--selling the same customer the same thing once every three years is clearly more profitable than selling it to them every 30 years.
Not sure about that. I'd tend to try something from another company after those three years. Which might break all the same - but it's worth a try.

Public visibility, I guess?

Diablo 4 on Steam Deck is quite magnificent (and desktop Linux too!)

I played Diablo IV at a friend's PC and what I hated about it is that you get to meet other players randomly. I am supposed to be The One To Save The World! ... except there's also buffoon27 next to me, who's The One To Save The World as well. And there's not even an opt-out for it.

Quoting: dpanterGoogle "game dev doors" and the internet will happily provide you with tons of articles about the soulcrushing endeavour of making doors. Enjoy a short and bittersweet blog post [External Link] from 2014 to get you started. :)
"The Other Door Problems" is great!

Quoting: dpanterI pity any game developer who had to deal with doors... it ain't much, but it's hellish work.
Why is that?
My first thought was, hey, why there's doors mentioned up there, what's special about doors?!?
(I am software developer, if that helps with answering.)

Skullgirls got review-bombed on Steam after some art changes

Quoting: EikeAccording to your logic - not mine.

Changing some sprites and backgrounds is very different from changing the genre or even the business model.

the question is: where you draw the line? what is acceptable for you might not be the same as what is acceptable for me, what define an piece of art for you might not be the same as what it define it for me.

an fighting game have tons of patches changing the balance (how much damage an attack does, how fast it is, the cool down, recover, range of the hitbox, timing) all of that can change, hell i played league of legends for a while they completely changed the gameplay of some characters!
an game can change a lot, and if its only there arent much we can do aobut it.

an video game is a lot of things, it is gameplay, sure, but its also soundtrack, graphics, every part of it matter.
one small change might not change an product but if we change a little bit for little bit in the end of the day we might end up with a completely different product, so again, where you draw the line?
To be honest... I don't know. Somewhere between changing sprites and changing genre or business model. ;)
(I personally usually don't run into such problems as I tend to play a game and then say goodbye for good.)
