That being said, I might go and try Brogue... that or just rediscover Nethack again...

There are a bunch of places you can play the original Rogue online. I haven't looked for Nethack, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit if the same was true.

Sorry. At the time I got so absorbed by the video I took little notice of the text. But your article is an excellent explanation of the feelings expressed by HexDSL.

We've got pretty much the same point of view, I think. Although I looked up the video after the article was mostly written, so it's less explaining and more the both of us coming to the same conclusions independently.

Regarding graphics, from the Steam page:

In addition, the full version will have improved graphics, additional character customization, and be much more optimized for performance.

So they recognize it's not a beauty to look at right now and plan to work on that.

Indie studios generally don't have the resources to make a game look good. Any game. Which is why you see so many pixel art and cartoon style games, which they sell to you as "retro", which arguably sounds better than "outdated".

Also, because WoW is the most successful MMO in history, and WoW had infantile cartoon art. Conclusion: All MMOs need infantile cartoon art to be successful!

It's also important to note that most of the work in this game was done by two people. With possibly a third who came on board more recently from what I gather. That's quite the achievement, even if the visual assets still need work (which they might get during the EA period).

The swipe at WoW is kind of childish, though. They gave their MMO a style consistent with the successful series of games it was based on, not because they weren't mature enough to make proper "realistic" art. If anything, I find a lot of what you might consider "mature" realistic stuff to be pretty boring to look at.

Watching a video review of this, and apparently despite the pretty primitive graphics there's a tonne of content. The writing is apparently quite funny, with skills like "Room Temperature Ball" and the ability to level up dying.

Despite the...less than inspiring visuals, this may be worth a look after all.

I'm personally interested in writing more articles like this on little Linux gems I find on Itch.io. I don't have much/any budget though, so it'll mostly be free or very cheap games, assuming some kind soul doesn't help out.
