Ah, but it's not about us, it's about John, who's depicted with a fairly level headed and slow-to-anger type persona - without that catalyst, his actions would have been out of character (at least, from my interpretation of him). I'll admit that it was unduly ignored throughout the rest of the game, and could have been used to bring a little more gravitas when the plot called for it.

Finally got around to reading. Great review :)

I'm not sure I agree with some of your story critique - the death towards the end of the first act of the game signals a shift in tone and stakes. It doesn't really seem out of place with the game's pacing, and serves to provide motivation for John's actions and attitudes throughout the rest of the game. I'll agree that the ending is a little lacklustre though - it feels awfully like the game ended before it was ready. I spent a little bit of time hunting around after completing the game to see if there was an alternative ending for getting all of the collectibles (something that isn't visibly tracked in the DRM free/Linux version of the game due to its reliance on Steamworks).

A lack of configuration options seems to be a hallmark of Unity titles from what I can tell. Splice suffers from this as well (though apparently that has a launcher with configuration options that isn't included in the Linux version). I ran Rochard in windowed mode and didn't have any resolution problems at all.

All up, I found Rochard to be an unexpected gem, and it kept me captivated enough to finish in one sitting back when the HIB 6 launched (still looking forward to finding time for a second playthrough).

They're say that, "Hopefully, all games EU4 and forward will be Mac & Linux compatible." Whilst I'm pretty optimistic about it, I'm not certain that "confirmed" is the right word.

Perhaps not. There was yesterday's confirmation that SMB would be published on Steam for Linux, though (and I imagine that Steam have update/support requirements that are at least as stringent as Desura's).

I wonder what experience he's basing that opinion on. So far as I'm aware he's never been involved in a non-Humble Linux port (unless you count Gish, which was done released in a very different climate, not only for Linux games, but for indie games in general).

Since BoI is sitting in a Flash wrapper, I can't imagine it took any significant amount of effort to get it packaged for Linux.

Of course, the countering opinion from people like Hemisphere, Frictional, Wolfire, Frozenbyte, and many other indie devs who actually have done non-Humble Linux ports, is that it is worthwhile.

I held off on posting here initially as there wasn't really enough information available to have any idea what went down.

I'm not certain that it's been highlighted enough that the anti-Linux quotes from Tommy are from some time ago and may not represent his current attitudes.

It's been great to see a lot of constructive criticism being given and received. Whilst I'll agree that the article itself is maybe isn't the best that's graced GOL, the discussion has made me feel proud to be a part of the community.

One thing that can help with editorials like this is to try to get a direct statement from the people that are being written about - not only can this help give them an opportunity to clarify anything that might be uncertain, and move discourse forward, but it'll also mean other sites will end up quoting your sites when doing their own news :)

Honestly, if they weren't looking into stuff, it would have made much more sense for them to not say anything, to keep their head down and wait for people to forget about it. They've opened up a little bit of a can of worms here so far as expectation management goes.

It's hard to know what the outcomes will be, but unless they're immensely inept, I'd say they probably are looking into it.
