Gabe Newell confirms Steam for Linux on video

I have to say I'm kinda surprised at how often I've had this discussion over the past couple of days. What we're talking about is the difference between "confirmation" and "supporting evidence".
Your email is succinct and is confirmation (though it's definitely not an "announcement" as many people have been saying). This video is ambiguous, but could be talking about the same thing, so it's evidence that supports the notion that Steam is coming for Linux.
Masquerading opinion as fact is what Larabel is most renown for. It's pretty uncool and potentially deceptive.
It's OK to believe. I believe too. This is about terminology. The word "confirmation" implies factual knowledge, not belief.
Edit: To be clear, I'm not a nay-sayer, I'm a say-it-right-sayer.

It's also guesswork to say that the video refers to the same stuff as the email you received. The likelihood of that being the case doesn't have any bearing on the fact that it's speculation.

I'm pretty sure it can't be anything else either. That doesn't mean it's anything more than unconfirmed though.
I take your email to have more meaning/value than the video that this thread is about (which is maybe the point I was trying to make - the video doesn't confirm or reveal anything we didn't already know).

It's pretty hard to weed out the different sources from the ones just citing Phoronix, and identifying which ones actually have content and not speculation in them. The 7 Day Cooldown podcast that you're talking about is about as vague as this video (in an example of Valve's working environment, Gabe mentions that he's moved his desk down to work with "the Linux guys," but gives no indication of what they're working on). The Ubuntu video does have a little interesting info given by Jono Bacon, but it sounds vague and second hand (he says something along the lines of "I do know that Valve have been talking with Canonical about ensuring top support for their client," but it doesn't sound like he was personally involved in that).
The emails that people have been receiving from Gabe have talked about a Linux dev blog being on the way. I think that's the first solid thing we're likely to see (and with the general Valve and economics blogs that have recently appeared, that feels like it won't be far away) unless we get an interview quote or something.
Like I said, I believe it's coming. I just really need to point out that we only have shaky details at best. We all have a lot of our own passion and enthusiasm invested in this, so it's easy to get swept away. I do feel like the Linux community is being more accepting of the stuff we've been given so far than we would be of information of the same calibre regarding different topics.

Quoting: "Soeb, post: 4829, member: 170"I'd still go as far as say that it's been confirmed. The amount of emails from random people seem to say yes and it appears unlikely to be a huge hoax that somehow nobody caught yet. And as far as servers are concerned, why would he talk to other companies about supporting Linux with this - many already do so.I agree that a hoax is unlikely, but that's a far cry from confirmed.
I know that until an official piece or a beta is released this should be taken with a pinch of salt, but I'd say with the number of different sources saying its true (some podcast some time ago, some Ubuntu devs at one point, Phoronix (*cough*) and random people that could be using the anonymity of the internet to mislead others, but why would they). I guess time will tell, but I'd like to just be hopeful about this for now.

Exactly. It's pretty ambiguous. Anything that requires educated guesses can't be called proof.

Quoting: "storma, post: 4825, member: 120"One could assume or make an educated guess that he is talking about something new, although not defined.

"We're talking to people a little bit about Linux and why we're supporting Linux."
At no point does he say what exactly they're (going to be? Valve already support Linux with dedicated servers if you want to be technical) supporting Linux with, sadly. It would require some assumption to call this video a confirmation of Steam coming to Linux. Anything that requires assumption is (by definition) just speculation.
I personally believe that Steam for Linux is coming, but there's no way I can say that it's a fact.

That's one thing about running Linux. Having questionable hardware vendor support means you really have to research before you buy (it's hard to argue that that's a negative thing anyway, though - it's always good to be aware of what you're getting).

I'm keen to be around and continue posting stuff, but I'm too busy to guarantee a lot of commitment.
I'm happy to support whomever is holding the reins in any way I can (Liam, have you considered the idea of running the show without posting news - being an editor/overseer as it were?).

Bumadar: Thanks :)
Hamish, it does seem like an ambitious project. I hope they pull through with it though. Linux needs more ambitious games.

Oops, Julius, not Jasper.
This page looks like it might have some possible avenues. I've only looked at the stuff listed as being open source. I haven't looked at anything in the *nix section.
