Valve's new branding guidelines hint at Steam Deck's SteamOS for more devices

Quoting: spacemonkeya very impressive sleep mode that even works for games (and Windows can't do).
Windows can do that, what makes people say it couldn't?

I had the original GPD Win from 2016 years before the Steam Dsck and I used its sleep function.

Granted some older games crash if minimized which means they'd also crash in sleep mode, SteamOS has a display manager that prevents this. Most modern games have no issue sleeping in Windows though

Steam gets new tools for game devs to offer players version switching in-game

Quoting: _MarsEspecially since it already exists but you need external tools for it.
That's arguable. Technically as far as software on your system goes all you need is Steam itself and open its hidden console tab. But you have to go to websites to figure out game ids, manifests and depot version numbers

The latest free games with Prime Gaming - October 25 edition - lots for Steam Deck / Linux
11 Nov 2024 at 12:08 pm UTC

Yeah, it's "free if you already have Prime".
So everything you get with Prime is free? What kinda logic is that?

I can sort of understand if someone didn't know about all their benefits, but that doesn't mean you have to lie with words. It's not free and that's the end of the story.

Hearing this always boils my blood because believe it or not video games had been my entire reason for subscribing. For me, the shipping is the bonus that I use rarely and I don't use any other benefits

So getting fed these nonsense articles claiming that my hundred bucks a year are actually worthless because it's all free is kinda infuriating.

Also worth noting that I've since unsubbed bexcause a lot of the games for Epic are games Epic had previously given away for free (for real this time). And you don't get a second copy to play with your friends or something... you just get... nothing, then. For a hundred bucks a year that felt more like getting robbed than giveaways. So I really, really hate the wording articles like this use which is effectively a lie anyhow.

Croc Legend of the Gobbos remaster will be a GOG exclusive
28 Oct 2024 at 6:54 pm UTC

It reminds me of World of Goo 2. It's not available on Steam; only on Humble and Epic, but DRM-free. I'll take that any time of the day, as opposed to a Denuvo Steam release for example. Game ownership and corporations not respecting your rights has become such a massive problem that I find not being able to simply hit the Install button on the Steam Deck to be an incredibly small price to play

We've all been there right? You paid for a game, it required an active internet connection and a couple of years later the publisher decided they're done with it and shut it down leaving you with a broken game.
Actually no. I've kept to my principles and that meant I've not had to endure this. No required third party on-line dependencies in a purchased game. That means no launchers with on-line DRM, no Denuvo, no third party accounts. Technically that still means I could purchase games directly from the likes of Ubisoft and such, but a lack of trust has keep me away from those.

That said, I obviously agree with this. But as long as people keep buying these games it'll stay like this.
I mean, I agree. I personally don't purchase always-online games. I would love to play Helldivers 2 but as long as it has online DRM that's a no.

The problem is, I was burnt. I had purchased always-online games before, unknowingly. Because that's the issue really, no store actually informs you whether a game needs a constant online connection or not before you buy it. Which is what I think should be illegal at the very least

So I lost a couple games that way and that's what prompted me to never buy always-online games ever again in the first place. And this is the crux of the matter, there will always be people who haven't been burnt yet and are simply unaware. Better information for consumers on this must be legislated, if nothong else

Nintendo goes after Switch emulator yuzu in new lawsuit

"Users obtain the prod.keys [...] by unlawfully hacking a Nintendo Switch console"

There we go, Nintendo straight up telling us that you don't own the hardware they sell you.
I wonder if that's legal? If only this would be up to the European court instead, they'd shut Nintendo down so hard. But we'll see how this goes

Steam Beta now lets you actually close controller info panels with controllers
9 Feb 2024 at 11:37 am UTC

But you were either already using a mouse or keyboard moments before, or you could hold the Menu button on the controller to send mouse input

Quoting: damarrinI'll never understand the bizzare default of touching the right stick to enable.
There's nothing bizarre about it. Touch is ideal since every button you need to actively hold down takes away from your ability to aim. Since you apply pressure to a point your hand will be a little less fluid and responsive. I have trouble explaining this but imagine trying to hit a tennis ball but you have to apply pressure with your thumb on a specific point on the racket. It'll make aiming way harder

Overwatch 2 out on Steam - works fine on Steam Deck and desktop Linux

Quoting: pazzoeoThe game is literally just an update to Overwatch, they didn't shut down anything, they just made it free.
No, they didn't. They removed content, they reduced the team size, they changed a lot of core things. "It's just an update" is like lying with terminology in circumstances like this. I purchased Overwatch 1, which has now been molded into something I never wanted. To say "it's just an update" completely misses the point.

Quoting: pazzoeoRocket League went free. PUBG went free. Are you mad about those too?
First of all, I don't have to be mad about games I don't play, so PUBG is out. I wouldn't have to address whataboutism at all but I'll humor you: As for Rocket League, no, I'm not mad, because the core game was never altered. Even if it was, it is not an always-online game like Overwatch. If I want I can just download any old version of it from Steam using its depot download functionality and play that, even online with friends using its LAN mode. The game is preserved, unlike Overwatch.

Quoting: pazzoeoThe game isn't pay to win because you can unlock every character for free.
That's a BS excuse. EA tried to use the same logic with Star Wars Battlefront. It doesn't work. If a game puts you at a disadvantage unless you pay up, it is by definition pay-to-win. That you can as an alternative grind until you are no longer at a disadvantage doesn't change anything about that fact. For one thing, you're technically paying with your time, and secondly you have to play the game to do so, meaning you are at a disadvantage during that duration anyway.

Quoting: pazzoeoThe PvE was literally just added and it's good.
It's pretty bad, but that's subjective. Hardly even a shadow of what it was meant to be, and a shameless cash grab.

Quoting: pazzoeoThe only thing I can understand being mad about is the removal of lootboxes, but really? We actually want them in our games now ?
I don't mind them anywhere near as much as the FOMO Battle Passes. Those are the ultimate cancer. Yeah sure I can pay two fiddy and get a random item, but at least I get >some< thing and I can always get it later and also through other means. With Battle Passes I have to hope I have enough time to play or I get nothing or just less even though I paid the same as everyone else. And you feel compelled to play when you don't feel like it just so you don't lose out on your purchase and cosmetics that may never return. It's such utter garbage.

Quoting: pazzoeoRemember that Apex Legends locks some cosmetics behind $500 worth of lootboxes.
But Overwatch wasn't Apex Legends.

Team Fortress: Source 2 fan project gets a DMCA from Valve

Quoting: Altefierso why take it down?
As far as I understand, they were redistributing assets. Engine re-implementation projects explicitly do not include any data files for this reason, and you have to supply those yourself, usually with an existing copy of the game (OpenMW, GZDoom, etc). I suspect if it weren't for this, Valve wouldn't have issued a DMCA.

I decided to check the Wayback Machine and found a link to the repository (Wayback Machine archive from September 2nd 2023 [External Link] ), it cannot really be browsed but it does archive the Readme, which suggests the game can just be downloaded and played. They may have re-created all of the assets, I cannot verify, but I would imagine if a DMCA was verified over redistributing assets, that they were in fact redistributing assets directly from Team Fortress 2.

I'm not familiar with the Source engines in any way, but I would guess many of the assets wouldn't be backwards compatible and couldn't be drop-in replacements. But that doesn't mean they weren't including at least some directly from the game.
Yes, I see this reply a lot. It doesn't answer the question: They have redistributed assets — so what? Still doesn't explain why Valve felt the need to go after them and take it down.
