Shadow Of Mordor Could Release For Linux Soon
3 May 2015 at 9:25 am UTC

SoM seem's quite focused on straight up fighting from what I've seen/read, which is the least interesting part of these games, but here's hoping there's more to it. I'm all about the exploration and the story, and the side quests and stuff like that. The new Batman is bound to be more up my alley.

Quoting: adolsonAC as in Assassin's Creed? What relevance does that have to Shadow of Mordor?
Well Assassin's Creed is one of the best known (although not the best IMHO) game series in the third-person open world action genre. Or whatever you'd call 'em. The similarities are definitely there, noted by several reviewers.

Banjo-Kazooie Creators Launch Kickstarter Campaign For 3D Platformer Yooka-Laylee

In the FAQ it says: "If funded, Yooka-Laylee will be released for Windows, Mac, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U." But Linux is clearly included in the main text, so this seems to be just a simple oversight. One of you backers might want to get them to fix this anyway. Personally I won't back the project, but probably will buy it when it's released.

New Linux Gaming Survey For May

Quoting: neffo(Of course that would apply to DX9 Togl games which nobody seems to have an issue with.)
Except that togl isn't an external wrapper. It's built into the game executable itself and working on the code level, not intercepting and translating d3d calls on the fly. There's a difference.

Quoting: tuubiI don't mind more VP ports of relatively old games that wouldn't otherwise get ported at all. I might have to skip this one though. War games rarely float my boat.
Do *not* skip this game. It's not like any other military shooter you've played. It's very story-based, and its story is hard-hitting and beautifully depressing. It's one of those games that makes you really question the "good" guys ... and it really doesn't have much positive to say about anyone in the conflict. There's a point that really makes you feel awful for something you did, and everything after that just makes you less trusting of everything in the game.
Let me get this straight. I should play this game because the story is really depressing and it'll make me feel awful? Would definitely be the first time I ever paid to feel depressed. Normally it's enough to check my bank statement or the news. Or try to trawl for morsels of information amidst all the trolling and flaming on P****nix.

All joking aside, I've seen the Yahtzee review and I'm still not convinced. I know it's anti-war (just like pretty much any good war movie or novel) and that it's all about the story, but I'm not convinced the story is really up my alley. Maybe if there's a great discount at some point. I'm not exactly starved for games at the moment anyway.

Gabe Newell Takes To Reddit To Answer Questions On Steam Paid Mods

Quoting: burzmaliThat seems to be changing these days. I got dog piled pretty hard on r/linux_gaming for suggesting that distributing FOSS as gratis and charging for support is better model than selling licenses.
Well if you do your market research on reddit, you're doing it wrong. Nothing's changing from what I've seen. Of course it would be stupid to charge for support of a game. The kinds of open source software you'd normally get paid support for are the kinds your business depends on.

Aspyr Media Are Teasing A New Game, They Promise Many Penguin Smiles

Quoting: tohurThink the game they are porting is WWE 2k15.
I have a hard time imagining WWE is a game that's been requested from Aspyr thousands of times. Or that it's one of Aspyr_Blair's personal all time favorites, but everything's possible I guess.

Techland Presentation On Porting Dying Light To Linux

I wonder if they already use ccache to speed up iterative builds. It's not like it's an obscure piece of software or anything. And even if a complete build takes ages, why would they recompile absolutely everything after every little tweak as they seem to imply? Is it company policy to only do clean builds during development? I hope I misunderstood.

And for distributed compiling on Linux, isn't distcc a fairly common choice?

Lots of questions addressed to nobody in particular...

Quoting: Segata SanshiroYeah, there's been games with better stories, but I think where this fell short is more a reflection of the genre rather than the quality of the writers.
True. And it also had a definite Hollywoodian produced-rather-than-designed quality to it, like all modern big budget games tend to have. Playing it safe to appeal to the widest possible target audience and whatnot. But in the end it's all in the eye of the beholder as they say. Some of us are bound to like the story more than others.

I'll have to join the chorus in saying this game doesn't deserve all the hyperbole. It's okay and has some innovative elements to it. The combat was fine, but I'm more of a story guy. That's why I usually play games like this on the easiest setting (unless there's a bullshit penalty attached). Life's challenging enough. I don't need my entertainment to frustrate me as well.

The story... well, it is certainly okay but not ground-breaking. Well, maybe it's not the kind of story the younger generation of gamers would have been exposed to otherwise. That might go some way to explain the "bestest story evar" type reviews you've all seen around the Internets. It certainly didn't blow my mind. Not that my mind needs to be blown to make the experience worthwhile.
