Ubisoft think gamers need to get comfortable with not owning games
17 Jan 2024 at 12:05 am UTC Likes: 9

I'm comfortable with not buying any Ubisoft games.

It's not like they've made anything I'd even want in decades anyway. And then they turned Rayman (protagonist of the only one of their series that potentially would've been of interest) into a violent cocaine-snorting alcoholic pervert propaganda-mouthpiece for a dystopian murder-machine in a recent animated production. That's commercial suicide for a franchise like that, so clearly they've got no plans to make anything else that I'd want to buy in the future anyway.

More money saved.

Oh man, this just reminded me of when I used to wear a USB bracelet that I always had a copy of SliTaz [External Link] on. I miss those things!

What have you been playing recently on Steam Deck or Linux Desktop? What are your latest recommendations that people pick up and play?
After having to unfortunately uninstall a handful of Capcom games due to them going back and adding DRM to old releases without warning (and without stating its presence on the games' Steam pages), I've been spending time with some of my usual go-tos for filling free minutes/hours - Brotato [External Link] (Proton), Ekans [External Link] (Proton), Stardew Valley [External Link] (Native Linux), and, of course, Super Bomberman R 2 [External Link] (Proton).

I also finally got around to completing the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy [External Link] version of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (Proton), which I've been meaning to do for a while!

Aside from those, I've also been revisiting some old favourites via RetroDECK [External Link]: Bomberman Hero [External Link] (N64), Donkey Kong Country [External Link] (SNES), and Star Fox [External Link] (SNES).

Quoting: Purple Library GuyHee!
As usual, the real corporate rationale is "Whatever makes us money is OK, whatever might reduce our money is not!"
And copyright is forever-and-a-day for their stuff, but if they want to use your stuff they will regardless of what the law says.

Quoting: AltefierIs it that old?
Yeah! It was originally released as a Flash game in 2010, then there were Linux and Nintendo 3DS releases the following year, and it ended up all over the place from there.

Quoting: 14It's terrible. In fact, software usage on a desktop environment in general is a really bad experience on BSD period.
I've never yet used any variant of BSD (it's one of those things that's been on my to-do list for more years than I'd like to admit!), so I've got no frame of reference for that either, unfortunately...

Wine is available.
Vulkan is available.
There is a quite good linux compatibility layer, so linux natives work most of the time.
Proton-GE isn't available.
Said differently everything Apple's Rosetta can run + most linux native.
That's actually better than I expected! Thanks very much.
