Here's the top Steam Deck games for December 2023

What have you been playing recently on either Steam Deck or desktop Linux?
I'm now addicted to Brotato [External Link] (Proton), thanks to recommendations from your articles, Liam, and also from jams3223!

I've been continuing with Chico and the Magic Orchards DX [External Link] (Native Linux), which is a nice Game Boy Colour-style puzzle game that seems to have flown under everyone's radar. I wrote a little bit about it on the forum the other day, too.

I also discovered an excellent little game called Ekans [External Link] (Proton), which is an inverse version of Snake where you play as a little guy who's trapped in a snake-pit who has to distract the snake by kicking apples to send him off in a different direction. It's a simple little high-score-based chase game, but that's all that it needs to be, and I love it already. (Hopefully a certain overly-litigious video game company, who has a character named "Ekans" in a part-owned series of theirs, won't go after this one on the basis of having invented spelling names backwards in video games, or something ridiculous of that nature.)

And, of course, there's been plenty of Stardew Valley [External Link] (Native Linux) and Super Bomberman R 2 [External Link] (Proton), as well.

I know it's a joke, but I must admit I'm curious about the state of gaming on BSD - it's a subject that I know absolutely nothing about!

Baldur's Gate 3 wins Game of the Year in the 2023 Steam Awards

What are you thoughts on the winners this year?
Mostly a pretty sorry bunch, I'm sad to say - there were only a few well-deserved wins, and it was largely like an echo of Geoff Keighley's The Godawful Awards.

Except, unlike those, they're not telling the guys behind Baldur's Gate 3 to please wrap it up whilst they pay tribute to a deceased colleague [External Link] (it was an automated prompt to hurry all gaming-related content along to make as much room as possible for advertisements, but it still wasn't a good look).

Linux use on Steam ends 2023 with a multi-year high (thanks Steam Deck)

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualbecause I already own enough Linux machines.
I keep telling myself that. Then my New Year's resolution ended up being to self-build a desktop machine (in spite of being entirely portables-focussed) at some point this year, just because I've always wanted to do it and feel it'd be a handy skill to have. Apparently there's no such thing as "enough Linux machines"!

Not everything is of interest to everyone, though.

Quoting: scaineIt's great that Monster Hunter World is on there (had Denuvo, it was removed), while Monster Hunter Rise isn't (still has Denuvo).
Capcom is off on one of their anti-consumer rampages again at the moment, as they do every decade or so, having recently deemed all PC-game modding to be cheating and doubling down on Denuvo [External Link], so we won't be seeing them removing Denuvo from any more games for a long time, I would imagine.

This annoys me, because they've stuck it on several titles that I was looking forward to (some of them compilations of decade-old games following up on collections that did not have Denuvo). At least it's saved me some money!

Quoting: scaineI hate wishing ill on anyone, I really do hate the whole cancel culture thing, but as a very committed gamer, I'd happily see Denuvo fold tomorrow and I'd toast its demise with a whisky and a smile.
It's not cancel-culture to want anti-consumer snake-oil* to die the death it deserves.

*I hate using this expression because I know that genuine snake-oil actually did have health-benefits due to containing high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, and it was the counterfeit stuff made from rattlesnakes and turpentine that did not, but what can ya do?

My Steam Deck, Super Bomberman R 2, and I will be over here in the lonely corner, as I've only played three out of the fifty games on this list, and almost none of the rest are my sort of thing.

Festive Co-Op Games

The first Super Bomberman R [External Link] (Proton) supported local co-op (a feature that unfortunately didn't make it into the more-experimental sequel [External Link] ). Double the players and double the bombs, so double the chances to accidentally blow yourself up!

Quoting: PenglingGimmick! Special Edition [External Link] (Steam, £7.79)
Don't bother with this one, chaps - it doesn't work properly on the Steam Deck. It randomly slows to a crawl and messes up the audio, and the controls become unresponsive, making it unplayable. What a sorry way to release an emulated early-1990s NES game, which is quite rare and would have benefitted from a good emulated release. I had to request a refund, for the first time ever, and hopefully the last.

Quoting: jams3223You're finally picking up the games I recommended to you; trust me, you won't regret it.
Brotato is crazy-addictive! Many thanks!

Gravity Circuit (which I wrote about a while back ) turned out to be great, too - and it's a native Linux title, to boot.

Steam Deck Verified picks for the 2023 holiday season

Quoting: DubsmachineThanks for this, somehow was not even aware of this one.
No problem. It's a great little quasi-remake, and an absolute steal at that price!

They added some multiplayer mini-games not too long ago, and though I'm not sold on all of them (Zool's gameplay is a bit too fast for some of them, I feel), some of them work quite well.

Quoting: ArehandoroAt that price, it should be illegal not to own the whole franchise. But I have them in DS, Switch (digital and Japanese imported physical). I don't think I can justify another copy xD
You know what's up!

I still need to pick up The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, but I won't be picking up Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy because Capcom is doubling down on Denuvo [External Link], which instantly knocked it off of my wishlist.

I hope to see Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright get a Steam port at some point, but that's probably more down to Level-5 than Capcom - though I could see Capcom mandating Denuvo for that, too.
