Quoting: Segata SanshiroI have a question. Why is "impact" the font of choice for almost all these simulator games despite being made by different developers?
Because Impact is a meme font and "simulators" is a Steam meme. You know, "walking simulator", "rock simulator", "tea party simulator" etc. Or am I digging too deep? -_-
Most of these games aren't memes though, they're deadly serious, as adolson has pointed out.

I have a question. Why is "impact" the font of choice for almost all these simulator games despite being made by different developers? With the exception of ETS2 which is gold, it's also always white with a black shadow. Did they all get together somewhere and decide this was the best course of action at their annual simulator game developer piss-up? Maybe the Train Simulator people had to use a different font because they lost at a drinking game. There are probably far more rational explanations for this, but I prefer this outlandish one.

Quoting: GuestThank you for reminding me NOT to get this game
Don't do that, apart from the bugs that we get sometimes this is an awesome game.
You're loosing a good game.
I agree, the bugs are few and far between. It was only the first few months where it ran like a crippled tortoise. I've had tonnes of fun in this game (50 hours, will probably be 80 after I play through the other DLC and do some more side stuff) and I'm insanely picky when it comes to games. Don't expect a good story, but it's a great deal of fun, nice levelling and tinkering, good mechanics and production values. You'd be missing out on one of the best Linux titles from not getting this.

This looks great! Mark Hammil is a great voice actor, best performance of the joker in Batman IMO.

Dying Light patch released

Completed the expansion (enjoyed it a lot), but still want to play it, do the side quests, etc. so cancelled the update. Thanks for the heads up!

I feel bad for Techland's two Linux devs, they seem overloaded and can't keep on top of all the issues. Been having this one where it crashes sometimes when I get out of my buggy - pretty annoying. There's the texture stuff too, but couldn't care less about multiplayer.

Street Fighter V will release on Linux & SteamOS this Spring time

Quoting: KeyrockAwesome. I'll scoop it up when it's on the penguin, even though fighting games generally aren't my jam.
Same. Though I've quite enjoyed the Soulcalibur series in the past, so I'd enjoy this as well if it has a decent career mode, customisation, etc.

XCOM 2 strategy game reviewed on Linux

Great review! I really love the game too, and would agree that it's better than the original (but not by a lot for me).

One small thing that really gets to me is an issue on the older game, which is still present but not as bad. I like to have all my soldiers' voices match their nationalities, and not sound like generic Americans because it makes the immersion better and feel truly GLOBAL not like Armageddon or Independence Day where "the earth being destroyed" seems to take place just in the States.

There's maybe 30+ nationalities to choose from (which is enough), but only a handful of voices. This would be OK if it was a budgetary concern, but they went through the trouble of providing 10 Spanish voices for each gender ALL FROM SPAIN, which makes up less than 10% of the hispanophone, how much effort would it have been to get some voice actors from a few different countries for 7 of those voices instead? Same with English. This time we see 10 American, 4 English and 2 Australian voices (which is an improvement from the last game) but seriously, could some of those American ones not been Scottish, Irish or South African? Why do we need 10 American voices and 10 Spanish voices which all sound identical? Seems like a waste of money.

This was the same with the names and locations. I had soldiers from Brazil who had Spanish names, and ones from Turkey with English names - ONE guy spending ONE day typing in names would have made this better. Whenever the ship lands in a new region, it looks identical to the last with identical people. On missions, a city in India looks the same as one in Russia - a few unique assets would have been nice. The game starts to feel a bit like this [External Link] after a while.

Anyway, I make a huge deal out of it, but it's not really - I just appreciate attention to detail. The game is friggin' awesome for that to be my sole issue with it.

Quoting: LarianFor me, this game was crashing immediately on startup [...] I'm also curious that Segata didn't mention any of this, so I can only assume it didn't happen for him. And upon reflection, that makes my experience even more puzzling.
Actually, this did happen to me on the first day and I reported it to TheBoss to include it in the release announcement article and it's in there. But by the time I wrote this article, the game got patched and the rather silly cock-up was gone (at least for me) so I didn't mention it since I thought it was properly fixed. Luckily though, I encountered no issues at all in the rest of the game so you should be OK there.

Quoting: ShmerlSpoiled with choice? Choice and branching are always enhancing adventures and RPGs. Of course it's quite an effort to implement.
Perhaps I was a little brash, If I explain and justify everything I say then these articles would be even longer than they are :P. I agree, I love branching stories, multiple endings and having an effect on the story and the world is part of what sets video games apart from other mediums. It's just that when there is a clear artistic vision, people tend to get annoyed that things didn't pan out EXACTLY how they wanted. It's like reading Lord Of The Flies (SPOILERS) and saying that a boat arriving at the end is a "cop out" because you wanted a different ending.

In this case they made a decision not to have a choice and it wasn't through laziness because having a couple of extra cutscenes at the end wouldn't have taken much to implement. They just knew how they wanted it to finish, and they did a good job so we should respect that. It shouldn't always be about giving the audience what they want, just look at the pile of turd that is Hollywood and see why it's not always the best idea. Sorry for the long answer!

Quoting: GuestVery nice review, although I enjoyed the action parts of Bioshock and Spec Ops, so I appreciated the balance between story and gameplay, so I have to disagree with that part. You're essentially complaining that a story/action game isn't just a story game. Firewatch is a story/exploration game and they do indeed pull that off very nicely.
That's mostly personal preference on my part. I have played games which pull off seamless action and gameplay to the degree where I think it was very well done, but with these games it felt more like the story was being held ransom. Like a book where before starting each new chapter you have to complete some boring and repetitive tasks or it won't give you that. It's probably my own cynicism though, I'm well and truly bored of shooting at things in games and the only FPS I enjoyed in these last 6 years or so has been Metro: Last Light and even that got a bit tedious for me at points. You're probably right though, I'm just complaining because I didn't like the gameplay :D
