Steam Hardware Survey For July 2014, Linux Dips

As per last month, I still think it would be cool to do a monthly GOL survey, see how many people dual boot, switch distros, use services other than Steam, etc.

Steam Now Has Over 600 Linux Games

I played XCOM and Civ long before their Linux releases, so wasn't terribly excited about their releases other than them being a great milestone for Linux. Same could be said about Deponia, but a bit more excited for that because it meant that some of their other games I haven't played may get ported. Eador would be a contender if it actually worked.

I think the ones I'm most looking forward to are coming out Autumn/Winter.

SteamOS Update 126 Pushed To Alchemist Beta

I use stock Ubuntu, Nvidia proprietary, with Unity. I have very few problems with using Linux for gaming, but I do occasionally see some games experience screen tear. Not all games, and not so severe that I'm prepared to run crazy Openbox/Compton combos to eliminate it, but it's about the last thing I'd like to see fixed in my gaming experience.
I use XFCE for my gaming rig and it is among the worst for screen tearing (with compton its a whole different story). LXDE is also a similar case. I have KDE on my laptop and get no tearing on that whatsoever.

Before I installed compton on Xubuntu, I used the SteamOS session on the login screen, which gave 0 screen tearing and marginally better FPS. Might be a good solution for you (good if you want to try SteamOS without doing a full istall too): http://linuxg.net/how-to-install-the-steamos-session-on-ubuntu-14-04-trusty-tahr/ [External Link][quote=scaine]Do you find, with all these compositor fixes, that SteamOS does a better job with screen tearing than stock Ubuntu?

Quoting: vulturei don't know if he watched me playing, but it is exactly how i felt
You should watch the review for the first one, its actually where the "PC gaming master race" meme was born, given how needlessly over-complicated it was.

It's true, the fact that you need to familiarise yourself with countless different controls, game mechanics, menus and spell names completely gets rid of the suspension of disbelief needed for a story-rich RPG to work. Rather than being absorbed by the story, it feels like the game is holding the story captive and sends you a couple of fingers in the post when you jump over one of its hurdles.

Take the Elder Scrolls series, they mostly have pretty simple and forgettable stories, but the fact that you don't have to navigate 20 menus every time you fight an enemy makes it far more enthralling and enjoyable despite the weak story.

It's really frustrating, because a few design decisions ruin what would otherwise be a very good game. It's like having a good car with a rubiks cube as a steering wheel.

I played around 30 mins of the last one (actually worked pretty well for me), will never play it all the way through or buy the sequel though. Found exactly what Yahtzee experienced with the game:

Street Arena, A Top Down Action Game Much Like Early GTA Games
28 Jul 2014 at 2:23 pm UTC

$1 for the full game by donating to indiegogo? That's plain crazy! With most croudsourcing its the opposite, like planetary annihilation which is £30 or something. They could raise the money 10x quicker by charging $10...

The case could also be that they plan to make this FTP or subscription, in the case of FTP the popularity probably wouldn't be an issue.
