Deadhold, A Squad Based Action RTS Game, And It's Coming To Linux

I just tried a couple of the newer UE4 linux demos yesterday. They seem to be making good progress. I reported and supplied logs to some of the devs on their irc channel about some multi monitor issues I was having with the early UE4 demos. The newer ones are now working flawlessly and the graphics are of course looking really good. UE4 is going to be a god send to linux I think(side note* REALLY wanna see cryengine3 on linux *cough*). I like RTS games.. but I am picky. This one looks to have some potential. Can't wait to see what it turns into. I really have not played any TD games though, I know what dota is of course, but I've never tried it. Maybe I'll break my TD cherry tomorrow and play some DOTA2.
Anyone have some DOTA2 advice for me?

I would like to say that I appreciate @princec coming by and sharing and trying to clear some things up. I understand his personality a bit better now and understand why he wrote the things he did. Do I agree with the way he has said thing? No. For anyone on the outside looking in it looks really bad and if I were a developer and read such things it would be a -1 for the thought of linux support. Linux doesn't need any help "looking bad" to people who might want to bring us games. But I do "get" him a bit better now.
I did just go back and reread my posts to see if (in anger) I said anything I wanted to apologize for. There isn't, I stand by what I've said. I never attacked any of their games because I have never played them, only saying what I had extrapolated from my (short) research into puppy games and the claims of the initial tweet. As for @princec, sorry bud, even if I "get" you a bit better now, I still think you either need not be "the voice" of puppy games or at least try to think a bit more of the weight of the words you use and how they will appear to those on the outside looking in(ie. The ones like myself and obviously others who just don't/didn't understand your "style" ). I like a lot of the comments coming from @Cheeseness and @liamdawe (and others too), we all seem to be mostly on the same page though they may be a little more tactful than myself.
You called yourself a linux user, and obviously you love games. If that is true, you are in the same boat as the rest of us when it comes to wanting to use our OS of choice to play the games we want to play, even if you don't get to "play" as much because you are creating. Things are getting better for us all, even if it is moving really slowly. Please be a voice FOR it and try not to paint such a bleak picture of it.

It was my foray into modding AOSP (android) and learning all the linux development tools needed to be decent at it that really made me fall in love with linux. It actually set me down the path of not being just a linux desktop user and actually learning much about the guts of linux itself and knowing how to make it do the things I want it to do. That is the point I stopped dual booting linux and started dual booting windows. I learned most of what I actually know about linux in those first couple of months. I had extremely casual coding and scripting abilities when I started. I had taught myself visual basic (VB4 lol) when I was 12 and wrote quite a few things. My basically full featured irc client was my favorite.. I think I spent 2 years on that. I wish I still had it and the code for nostalgia sake. Plus I took a pascal class in high school. Yet these guys are "pro" coders and are scared of an OS. I don't get it.
AND! lets not forget about the linux community. In general it is awesome. Google is your friend if you are stuck and/or don't know how to do something.

Quoting: Half-ShotBut in general Linux has never just been about sales. It should be a fun thing to want to port to and shouldn't cost you lots of development or support time if you do it well. You sound like a linux user. Unfortunately that's not true for many devs out there. They have been long time windows users who don't know linux and don't seem to care to learn, even for $$ apparently. I would think being smart enough to make vidya games would make them smart enough to really learn to use linux... I mean it's really not that hard.

I certainly don't like to see multiple developers who release linux games complain about sales in one week. It's bad publicity for us, as it looks bad from the outside looking in. Both developers though had sold their games on steam for windows for far longer than steam for linux has been around and I really think that has a lot to do with it. Hopefully other developers that are interested in linux and are "looking in" on us right now understand that.
It's also no surprise that the linux gaming community is small. Right now, there is NO reason for someone who is happy gaming on windows to switch over to linux. The games many want to play simply are not available, and "the normals" are NOT going to play with wine to get windows games working at possibly far less graphical fidelity than they can get from windows. Like having to force a beautiful dx11 game to render in dx9 making it look like an xbox 360 game (see Tomb Raider 2013).
There is kind of a chicken and egg thing going on. Linux wont see the gaming crowd start to possibly move until the games are there and The devs are complaining there aren't enough linux gamers.

Quoting: Half-ShotHis previous comment was that he didn't think the effort was worth it, and only Unity like tools can make it worthwhile for developers.Seeing as how Gary's Mod is currently the #4 top seller of linux games on steam, that is very discouraging. I certainly don't want only unity games. Yes, they work mostly, but it has issues that I can't help but notice, and I instantly know when I am playing a unity game.

This is probably the only Valve game I don't own. Ill buy it when a working linux version comes out. I say working because NONE of the source engine games play nice with my surround setup. Ive made bug reports but never really got a response from them. I have hopes that source2 will handle my setup correctly.. would be cool if CS:GO linux was source2 ;)

Ouch, it does seem to be shaping up to be true. I don't blame him one bit though. I see two things coming from this. He will take his 2B and live the good life for the rest of his life, or take 1B, live the good life for the rest of his life and invest the rest in a new venture. My $$ would be on the later.
Would be awesome if he took the second road and started an EXTREMELY linux friendly publisher and started backing studios who make games for linux. Maybe LA (Linux Arts) as a good jab at EA :P

I have 2 250gb samsung 840 evo ssd'd in this rig. One has linux and one has windows.. I'm running out of room on my linux drive because of games mostly. I think I am going to go removing games from windows before long and shrink it's partition to give some to linux so I can have MORE LINUX GAMES! ;) Ive begun testing a lot of my "old" games to find out what does and does not play well with wine. My rig, albeit aging is still fairly powerful so most things seem to run just fine. Would be WONDERFUL if wine started to dig into DX11.
while off topic anyways, I just finished up playing the new Wolfenstein game (in wine, runs perfect) last night. If anyone is a FPS lover and have not played it yet... GO PLAY IT! The best straight up FPS in a LONG time. IMO of course.
Now back to topic. I don't own DayZ, but I would be all over a linux port!!

Quoting: sonicSounds good, so should I prepare remove Win from my PC, once and for all?I am inching closer and closer. I honesly have not booted it to actually use it in forever excpet for about an hour a week or two ago to try out Metro 2033 Redux from my buddies steam acct. just out of curiosity(dont wanna install mine til linux ver). The game is going to be awesome if it really has graphic parity with windows like they "say", though I was annoyed with win after 20 min.

Quoting: NyamiouAlso, this : http://www.puppygames.net/blog [External Link]/?p=1574. They actually tell to every buyer on Steam that they are just a piece of s**t (I'm not exaggerating). Read it and tell me they do not deserve this.I read more of that blog than I care to admit.. it's sad really. Someone who has a financial interest in puppy games needs to keep this guy from speaking to the public on the companies behalf. He is digging his own hole. Steam may have brought the price of his games down to $10. Simply being available on steam has givin them a broader audience than they had before. If not enough people are willing to buy your game at $10 and wait for sales or 90% off coupons.. then that should tell you something. The truth hurts sometimes.. and it seems the truth here is that not many people like your games. I just checked on the total users playing their Revenge of the Titans game on steam.. 11. yep 11 people out of 4.5 million currently logged in.

Like others have said.. if they want some #'s that actually mean something they need to release a new game with linux support from day one. Other wise there are just too many variables at this point in the game.
Valve needs to start keeping track of what games get played in wine and on which platform (linux,OSX,bsd..). I'm sure there is a way to tell. Then make those #'s available to all.

Quoting: kozecWhy trolling? They are selling games for 10€ per piece, so they made only like 930 sales. With 5 games. That's awfully low and he has good reason to feel concerned. The games have been available for windows much longer than they have been available for linux, and the games play fine in wine. So I am guessing that the people who wanted the games already bought them and a bunch of those could have already been using wine on linux to play them.. but steam in wine reports as windows. I can only assume that quite a few of the linux sales they have received since making a linux port available are more than likely people who simply bought the games to support the linux gaming movement even if they had no interest in playing the games.

I get it.. puppy games put a bunch of blood, sweat and tears into projects they believed in and is sad their games are not as popular as they had hoped. NOTHING wrong with that either.
You know what is WRONG? Going on your social media sites and crying to the folks who did buy your games (probably why they followed you on twitter after all...) that they didn't give you enough money. If that is not bad business.. well I don't know what is.
