The Witcher 2 Gains Yet Another Performance Beta
14 Aug 2014 at 9:36 pm UTC

I finally just gave up for now on glxosd with steam games and Arch. I'm in contact with the glxosd creator so hopefully we will work it out eventually. I went ahead and installed voglperf and used it.

With vsync
30 fps in game (60 sometimes)
60 fps for prerendered stuff

Without vsync
mostly 40-63 fps in game (seen some 70-90 fps in the intro interogation scene)
FPS off the charts in menus and prerendered stuff.

Arch Linux
AMD FX-8350
Asus sabertooth 990fx r2
8gb Kingston ddr3 1600
Samsung 250gb 840 EVO
2x EVGA GTX-580 SC
Game Res - 1920x1080

The Witcher 2 Gains Yet Another Performance Beta

Quoting: pd12@EKRboi, please read the usage instructions properly.
"glxosd --steam %command%"
or "glxosd -s %command%" - extrapolating from "glxosd --help" Common convention is that options with full words and not letters are prefaced with "--"
http://nickguletskii.github.io/GLXOSD/usage.html [External Link]
I just missed the second - when I typed. Indeed I have tried "glxosd --steam %command%". It's not just this game it doesn't work with anything launched from steam that I have tried, but it works just fine with any non steam/drm game.

I've been in touch with Nick (the creator of glxosd) before, so ill get with him and try to figure it out as I would like to get some numbers. There seems to be even more improvement in this beta as well. Still running on Ultra -uber -ssao -motion blur with minimanl stutters.

Had anyone been able to get glxosd to work with the steam version? I have been unsuccessfull. The game fails to start with "glxosd %command%" or "glxosd -steam %command%" for me.

sweet! these games are in my backlog. They are one of my buddies favorite franchises, and since we tend to like the same games I'm sure I'll enjoy them. Part of me felt I would never have a backlog of linux games... but it's happening!

A New The Witcher 2 Linux Beta Appears, Improved Performance

I was never able to get glxosd to run with this game so I have no numbers. The last beta made it at least "playable" and this one has improved as well. I don't feel like framerate has risen much as it still seems like 20-30fps but it does feel more responsive. It is still struggling way too much for me to have 2 gtx 580's though. Im playing on high -uber -motion blur -ssao

EDIT* oh WOW! scratch what I just said. This beta is a mega improvement! The feeling of being more responsive before must have just been placebo :S: I forgot that I had renamed the witcher bin to launcher so that steam would launch it directly instead of the actual launcher. So when it updated for the new beta and I launched it from steam it was still launching the last beta bin. It is now running at least twice the last beta's framerate and possibly even 60fps. Very pleased with these new enhancements. Kudos to CDPR for stepping up and really improving it. Just symlinked launcher to witcher bin so I don't make that mistake again :D

EDIT again* I'm able to push it up to ultra now and it runs smoothly as well. :woot:

GOG Has More Linux Games Added To Their Collection

Quoting: fleskOne thing that both surprises and annoys me about Steam's store front is that they don't do more to promote new releases and ports to Linux. You'd think they'd be interested in doing that the way they promote Linux as "the platform of the future" but when Tetrobot & Co. was released for Linux at the end of 2013 hardly anyone even knew about it.
Hmm. I have noticed the exact opposite. Since in the last year I'm logged into steam from Linux probably 90% of the time, as well as purchasing more stuff with Linux support than not. I have noticed that the target adds when you open steam are almost always a Linux game. I just fired up steam and ALL the "slideshow" ads at the top of the homepage are ALL Linux games. I don't think I have set anything to make it do it.. I'm pretty sure its all targeted.

Apparently Valve Have Secretly Launched Source 2

Quoting: EKRboiWell that's awesome. Ill just be over here in my corner waiting for the official announcement of source2 and that HL3 will be a linux/steamOS exclusive.
While I assume this comments not too serious, I have seen many penguins put forth this very idea and it perplexes me. Linux enthusiasts are supposed to be about openness not exclusivity. Platform exclusives are one of the reasons I stay away from consoles nowadays; it's anti-competitive and bad practice imo. I think Linux will continue gaining popularity through it's own merits as a platform. :)
No not really serious. I know how it feels to be left out in the cold in the gaming world.. but I would still have a good laugh IF they did do it.

Metro Redux FPS Games Have A New Overview Video, On Linux Later This Year
9 Aug 2014 at 10:24 pm UTC

"you know what really grinds my gears??"

That I picked up the redux versions because of the penguin icon only to have steam remove it when I wasn't even paying attention. I did not realize that when it was announced they said linux "later this year". We all know how "later this year" turns into "well.. now maybe q1 next year". I was all excited for the 26th and have been replaying LL on linux in anticipation. :><:
