Apparently Valve Have Secretly Launched Source 2

Quoting: MayeulCMaybe not an exclusive, but a timed exclusive ?
I would call that a win as well. I bet the linux stats on steam would fly through the roof that month :P

While it would be an amazing power play by Valve to do something like that and leave console and windows users out in the cold for a bit.. they won't and it makes me :'( Financially it would be a (temporary)disaster i'm sure, but OH MAN!, I would definitley have a long and likely evil sounding laugh when I read the news they were going to do it :D

Quoting: minjI don't think a directory name is something to hype over tbh
a directory name alone, no. It seems to be MUCH more than that though. A new world/model/map editor. The fact that the libs all have a 2 added to their name. Plus in the reddit it is said that "the source reverse engineering community" has looked at it and say it is. I can only take that to mean that the new libs were opened with IDA or similar and analyzed, and that there are enough differences (or it's completely different) that point to this being a new engine.

Only "Valve time" will tell ;)

Well that's awesome. Ill just be over here in my corner waiting for the official announcement of source2 and that HL3 will be a linux/steamOS exclusive.

Maybe it won't be long before Line (a play on Wine) is being developed so those poor windows souls can play linux games they can't get for winblows. =P

*Yes I know the W in wine does not stand for windows.. im just being goofy.. deal with it =)

Borderlands: The Pre-sequel Looks Like It May Come To Linux (UPDATED)

Quoting: vultureright now they added this ?next? gen delusion to the mix?... sheeesh and lol. insanity=limitless
^ This. "next gen" was old gen when it was still on the ol' drawing board. I'm glad for the console crowd that they finally have something better to look at.. but the hardware was outdated from the start. I really believe consoles are on the way out and I would not be surprised if this is the last console gen... I mean the new consoles are simply low end PC's anyways. they may be extremely popular in some places (ie, US) but the truth of the matter is that PC gaming as a whole is much larger than all the consoles combined. PC gaming brings in more $$ on software and hardware sales than all the big consoles combined.

"PC gaming hardware market is more than twice as large as the console gaming hardware market."

[External Link]

"From a sheer hardware perspective PC Gaming is pretty large. I can’t pin exact figures but consider this. In 2008 well over 120 million discrete video cards sold thru last year. By comparison there were about ~45 million total consoles sold (Includes: PS2/3, 360, Wii) in that same period"

https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2009/03/03/just-how-many-pc-gamers-are-there [External Link]

“the big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity. Just a few years ago the reverse was true.”

"After reading the interview, I went back to my own conversation with Raptr CEO Dennis Fong, who reminded me there are a staggering 900 million PC gamers worldwide. Contrast that data with global consoles sales of, say, Nintendo's Wii, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and Sony's PlayStation 3: About 262 million units. Combined."

EDIT* Another thought is with these consoles already being outdated, assuming another 10ish year console cycle and considering that 4k tvs are quickly coming down in price that it almost makes no sense not to buy one when it's time for a new tv. What happens in 2-3 years when Johnny(Jenny?) XBone buys him/herself a new 4k tv and goes home and hooks up that XBone or PS4 and it downright looks horrible outputting at 900p? Playing a game at 720 vs 1080 on a 1080 monitor is completely obvious and that's only a small difference in res when compared to 900p -> 2160p(AKA: 4k)

:woot: STFU! color me flippin excited! Im buying this either way because Borderlands... this is one of those games that no matter if you hate physx or not does an amazing job of utilizing it to the max. I won't be able to play it without it and cpu physx is just not the same. As was posted here back in march with gameworks coming to linux that must certainly mean gpu physx is coming too (and soon!). Lets just hope it comes before TPS so I am not made to boot winblows for it!

Steam Hardware Survey For July 2014, Linux Dips

Quoting: EKRboiI still need Windows for gaming just because there are lots of titles that doesn't run on Linux - on most likely never will. I do use SteamOS for all gaming I can (there is Linux version available) despite the fact the quality of Linux versions are much worse compared to Windows versions.
I suggest you give the UE4 linux demos a try if you have not. I still fire them up just to see them and get excited for what is to come. I keep reading people saying that OpenGL is every bit as capable as DX11 to produce sweet looking visuals.. until those demos I was not completely convinced and the engine isn't even done yet for linux. Now I don't think OGL is as optimized as DX in general as it always seems to be more taxing on my system, but things are bound to get better.

Quoting: SkullyYou can download windows games with steam. Easy as pie with Steamcmd.

I used it to get the files for Doom3bfg and 7daystodie. So I could use the data for native versions.
Nice! I've bookmarked it for when I need it again. While this will work... an option in the Steam GUI should be there IMO.

Steam Now Has Over 600 Linux Games
4 Aug 2014 at 8:31 pm UTC

This year, as in the last 12 months, I would have to say Trine 2 The Complete Story. For 2 reasons.. It's a beautiful game that runs extremely well even spanned to 5760x1080. Plus it is/was not a type of game in my "comfort zone" and I probably would have never tried it if I wasn't looking for native linux games to play. I picked it up on sale to show my supprt for the linux gaming movement in general and found it to be great fun and a PC game my gf actually enjoys as well.. so a win/win that was worth every penny. Also as I already own it I can't wait for the linux version of Trine 1 enhanced.

While I have not paid for it yet because they still have a couple minor things to work out on the linux version I found the Painkiller HD demo to be a good looking and fun, no brain required shoot-em-up. When/if they fix those minor issues or next time it goes on sale for <= $10 ill be purchasing it. This was also a game that I had never even heard of until I went looking for native linux games to play, so I likely would have never played it on windows.

All the praise for the Civ 5 port makes me want to try it because I own it.. though it's not really a game in my "comfort zone" either.. it was another game I picked up because of all the praise as well to show support for the linux movement.

Metro: LL would absolutly be on my list if it fell into the last 12 months category. While the visuals can't hold a candle to it's dx11 brother.. it's still one of the best looking linux titles I have played.
