Developers of the RPG 'Edge Of Eternity' are still waiting on Unity before supporting Linux

Quoting: EhvisAlso on Vulkan?
Everything listed is also true for Vulkan, except it's missing detection for sparse texture capability (on all platforms).

Congrats on the 4 year cake by the way! :D
Thanks!

I'm skeptical about the accuracy of the developer's post. These have all been working on OpenGL+Linux since their inception, except the one that just doesn't make sense.

  • Sparse textures: Already supported on OpenGL+Linux, and explicitly listed in the Unity doc they linked as being supported on OpenGL

  • Async GPU Readback: Already supported on OpenGL+Linux, covered by automated tests

  • GPU Fence API: Only used on PS4 today, not sure why this would be a blocker for Linux and not other desktop platforms

  • Streaming mipmaps: Already supported on OpenGL+Linux

Quoting: soulsourceIs the Unity Player still statically linked against SDL
It's still statically linked; I'm not aware of any plans to switch to dynamically linking SDL.

I have no idea why anyone was p/invoking into SDL after Unity ~5.2, but the time to stop doing so is now.

Quoting: EhvisSince "walking while standing still" is the most common cause of nausea with VR, I'm wondering how they solved that in this game.
True locomotion support - teleport, instant teleport, blink teleport, classic full locomotion (with or without comfort mode). Explore the game's non-linear world, solving puzzles your way. Go with the safe built-in teleportation system or tweak and adjust the way you jump through the VR space to best suit your playing style.
It looks like "whatever works best for you". If they're using the same system as the Serious Sam VR titles, it's pretty flexible and works nicely.

If this happens consistently, please file a bug report. :)

Streets of Rogue is another Unity title that's broken with fullscreen, here's a quick fix

Quoting: TakIt's fixed in 5.6.2p3, a 5.6.2f1 hotfix build [External Link], and 2017.1.
Is it possible for users to patch their games with that hotfix, or does it require the devs to update?
If the game is using 5.6.2f1, you can replace your executable with one from the hotfix package. If it's using a different 5.6 release, it's up to the developer.

Has it now been found and fixed?
Yes. It's fixed in 5.6.2p3, a 5.6.2f1 hotfix build [External Link], and 2017.1.

I knew you would have measures in place, but something this big somehow got missed when it's so easily reproducible? I'm sure you do massive amounts of testing, but isn't that largely on Windows with the Linux team being much smaller?
No, the automated testing covers all platforms; we also have dedicated Linux QA staff who specifically verify bugfixes and test new features.
The problem in this instance is that the issue only occurs on a few WMs and only occurs when launching directly to fullscreen, which probably contributed to it slipping past automated testing, manual QA, and public preview build feedback.

These are all caused by a single problem.

Quoting: GuestGOL’s stats say that only 15% of Linux gamers use the Unity DE
I strongly suspect that this is not representative of the general public.

Quoting: AllocNot sure when the switch to SDL2 happened (at least I think it already did), maybe that's related?
Yes, it's a regression caused by switching to SDL for windowing.

Quoting: liamdawethey need to seriously step-up their testing game
We actually do a massive amount of testing [External Link] - in this case, when we made the SDL switch, in addition to our thousands of automated tests and standard alpha/beta cycles, we had our QA folks doing manual testing, and we additionally sent out public player builds for people to try out on their own configurations, to try to find precisely these issues. Unfortunately, this particular one wasn't reported to us until developers started shipping updates to their Steam games.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleI think it might be fixed in Unity 2017.2b2
It's fixed in 5.6.2p3, there's a hotfix build [External Link] for 5.6.2f1, and the fix also lives in 2017.x.
