Linux Mint 22.1 Beta released with Cinnamon 6.4 desktop and lots of Wayland improvements

Quoting: legluondunetDebian and Debian-like distributions are not, to my experience, the best Linux distribution for gaming, their packages are not enough often updated and lack libraries dependencies. Arch and Aur are the way to follow for Linux gamers, SteamOS is ARCH based.
For the DE I suggest a light one to keep your resources for gaming, like XFCE.
My experience has been the opposite of yours. I find Arch-based distributions to be unstable, difficult to configure and the AUR to be potentially risky. Being up-to-date is not all it is cracked up to be, especially in regards to stability and inter-compatibility. I prefer the stability and broader market support I get from Ubuntu-based distros myself. Pop!_OS being an excellent compromise as a semi-rolling distribution.

I do agree about XFCE, however.

Xfce 4.20 desktop released with experimental Wayland support
16 Dec 2024 at 5:37 pm UTC

Do you use Xfce? If so, why do you use it and not others like KDE and GNOME?
I use Cinnamon for daily driving; XFCE and GNOME (Pop!_OS variant) for gaming.

I am quite impressed with XFCE. It is lightweight, highly customizable and stable.

I like KDE but find it to be unstable on Nvidia Optimus, so I don't use it.

In no hurry for Wayland -- it will come when it comes.

Swordhaven: Iron Conspiracy is a party-based RPG from the devs of ATOM RPG now in Early Access
15 Dec 2024 at 7:09 pm UTC

That's what I hate about Early Access -- the demo just stopped working (no license) -- before I even had a chance to play it for more than 10 minutes.
Teaches me for putting it off, I guess. I'm not going to pay to beta test the game so I don't know why they can't leave the demo up as well.

The Witcher IV revealed with Ciri as the protagonist

Wow. Rarely do I find a reveal trailer to be as compelling as this one. I'm sure that this game won't run on my laptop, but that's okay, I am happy for those of you that do have the necessary hardware. If the game lives up to the promise of this trailer, it's gonna be awesome.

Steam Beta for Dec 11 brings new game update options plus a new downloader style

Quoting: Doktor-MandrakeI just wish valve would let us launch games without having to update them
I get around this by setting the games to update when game launches and putting the Steam client in offline mode. Games only update when the client is online.

That way, I can take the client online without starting a whole ton of downloads. Of course, unlike most folks, I tend to game without an Internet connection most of the time ...

Quoting: JarmerMint offers a debian based option. I wonder why Pop doesn't?
The Mint Team has always said they maintain the Debian based option as a backup in case they ever have to drop Ubuntu (for whatever reason). Don't know how System 76 feels ...

Quoting: The ArticleReally brings back some memories of one of my first loves, the Amiga!
The first computer I bought for myself was an Amiga 500. Brilliant technology. Way ahead of everything else that was available at the time. Too bad that Commodore couldn't compete against the IBM/MS/Intel behemoth.

Pleasing to know that the Amiga is still around in Europe though ...

Quoting: Mountain ManThat's how people are justifying it, but the reality is, you are paying $30 to beta test a free to play game.
Yeah? GGG has almost always worked this way. They aren't saying anything different. I'm paying $30 to get 300 coins for MTX transactions and it's allowing me early access to their game. That's kinda how they've always operated. Had I supported them about $50 more over their lifetime, I would have gotten the early access for free as they gave it to a lot of POE1 players who had supported them.

None of this is new, or cloudy, or deceptive information. It's literally the way they've operated since the start of POE1 and how they generate funding.
I'm with Mountain Man. What you've described here makes the game totally unappealing to me. But I dislike always-online, multiplayer games any way, especially those with subscriptions or micro-transactions. If you like 'em, enjoy ...

The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2025

Quoting: enigmaxg2You need a rolling-release to keep in pace with gaming fast evolution, anything of this should suffice: Manjaro, Endeavour, Garuda, Nobara. I get it, arch-based and fedora-based (mostly the former) can be daunting for some people, but it's the best way to enjoy Linux gaming.
For those that enjoy the rollercoaster ride, yes. The average, non-technical user -- many of which are on Windows or MacOS -- do not want to have to put in the effort needed for Arch or Fedora. They just want an OS that is gonna give the necessary basics and be stable. They are not hardcore gamers like you appear to be.

That being said, I admit that I like Pop!_OS because its semi-rolling nature and also because it is Ubuntu-based. The UI is stable, which is also good.

I was intrigued by what the Linux Mint XFCE users on this site were saying about their chosen distro, so I decided to give it a try as a gaming platform. I have been pleasantly surprised. I like it almost as much as Pop!_OS. For me, it proved that you don't have to have a rolling release distro to have a good gaming experience.

I will admit I had a nerdgasm at the portable pilet mini consoles from soulscircuit

Quoting: Purple Library GuyCanada--some of the most expensive cell phone plans in the world
Tell me about it. That's why I use a relatively inexpensive Pay-As-You-Go plan.

Back in the day, before the advent of smart phones, we used to call them PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants). I think I like your description for them better.
