GE-Proton 8-25 released, should fix a bunch of early 2000s games
22 Nov 2023 at 11:59 pm UTC Likes: 1

Quoting: BrokattIt's not available either as a snap or deb.
While it isn't available as a Snap or a Debian package, it is available via Pacstall [External Link] for Ubuntu-based distros since January ( DavidoTek/ProtonUp-Qt#83 [External Link] ). There is an open issue for adding a Debian package ( DavidoTek/ProtonUp-Qt#69 [External Link] ).

Historically, ProtonUp-Qt was not provided as a Snap due to some issues with strict file access ( DavidoTek/ProtonUp-Qt#3 [External Link] ), but there was renewed interest and a new issue was opened afterwards ( DavidoTek/ProtonUp-Qt#123 [External Link] ). Hopefully this is some useful background.

ProtonUp-Qt is also available via AppImage as another user mentioned, there are also two AUR packages, and of course it's available on Flathub.

Steam Autumn Sale 2023 is live with huge savings
21 Nov 2023 at 8:54 pm UTC Likes: 3

Managed to bring my wishlist down below 900 games for the first time in a while, the deals on this sale were better than I expected.

The list of provided games is very helpful, but a couple of buyer-bewares for anyone interested:
- "Grand Theft Auto V" and "Red Dead Redemption 2" both contain the Rockstar Games Launcher and require a Rockstar Games Social Club account.
- "Red Dead Redemption 2" was a brief (few weeks?) Epic Games Store exclusive when it launched.
- "Cyberpunk 2077" contains some form of GOG launcher, though I believe it can be skipped and is mainly used to advertise other CDPR games and Cyberpunk updates/DLC. No GOG account should be necessary to play the game.
- "7 Days to Die" contains Easy Anti-Cheat.

Portal: Revolution is an upcoming fully-featured Portal 2 prequel mod

As a huge Portal fan with about 100 hours on each game singleplayer (and maybe less than 10 hours total being spent on the co-op/workshop content), this isn't doing it for me. It feels like "Portal Reloaded" all over again.

For me, Portal and Half-Life mods are, 9 times out of 10, missing something. It's hard to put my finger on, but virtually all fan-games suffer from this. Portal and Half-Life fan games, including Portal 2 Workshop levels, just feel like they're missing the "Valve touch", like how Mario, Zelda, and Metroid fan-games are always missing the "Nintendo" touch. Maybe other Nintendo fangames feel this way too but these are the only ones I have experience with.

There's something about how the levels here appear to look and play, they go for the kinetic feel which is great, but Valve's levels have this certain feel that is very good at allowing you to think for a long time without being distracted by the level. It gets out of your way when you're trying to solve it, in a way that I have yet to see other Portal-inspired creations do. To go back to Nintendo again, the puzzles in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have the same feel, though with the "Nintendo" puzzle mindset, which is distinctly different than the Valve one in a way I can't quite explain.

I'm also not sure how I feel about the brand-new story, considering how closely tied Portal and Half-Life are, but I'm willing to forgive a story that doesn't quite feel like Portal if the gameplay does. That will remain to be seen though.

Having said this, that "Valve touch" is not infallable, as we've seen with Half-Life: Source, which is just as bad as missing the mark as Black Mesa was. In terms of Portal though, Valve have been solid. The only fangame to seemingly come close is Portal 64. Just by looking at this trailer I'm less than thrilled to see another Portal fan game, but I can appreciate the dedication and hard work just the way I can with community Portal 2 maps all the same.

I just don't quite think it's "Portal".

Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update brings Half-Life: Uplink, Steam Deck support

I was never keen on the "re-imagining" of Half-Life that the Black Mesa project ended up being, and Half-Life: Source just felt off, so this is an extremely welcome update.

Goober Dash is a chaotic 32-player Race Royale

This one looks interesting, provided it doesn't contain any invasive client-side Anti-Cheat like EAC, and also provided it doesn't contain Epic Online Services. The former is plausible, but the latter "cross-platform multiplayer" has me concerned. Several developers have accomplished cross-platform multiplayer with Azure PlayFAB (Street Fighter 6) or AWS (Guilty Gear -Strive-).

Steam Deck OLED initial quick-look and Q&A Part 1
13 Nov 2023 at 9:09 pm UTC Likes: 5

Since the power brick has been updated to accommodate the bigger battery (and 2.5m in length instead of 1.5m), is the cable removable? Even though any brick can be used, it would be nice for longevity if the cable was removable.

Valve reveals Steam Deck OLED for November 16th

Much like my Switch before I replaced it with my Steam Deck, I primarily use my Deck docked, so an improved battery life and wake from Bluetooth are very welcome additions. OLED will be superb, and a slightly better screen (probably from reduced bezels) is awesome. Don't care much about the whole HDR or 60hz+ thing though.

Even though I don't need a new Steam Deck, I do kinda want one... If they release a Steam Controller 2 to go with it I would be sold, that would be the perfect docked experience.

A couple of buyer-bewares:
- "Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 - Turbocharged" contains Easy Anti-Cheat and, to my understanding, also uses Epic Online Services. This means you're at the whims of Epic Games in two ways, and also that the online could possibly break with an update (or if Epic shuts down EOS).
- "Salt and Sacrifice" was an Epic Games Store timed exclusive.

Cinnamon 6.0 for Linux Mint 21.3 to have 'experimental' Wayland support
3 Nov 2023 at 12:32 am UTC Likes: 3

Quoting: AdutchmanI mean, KDE and Gnome (mostly Gnome) were the torchbearers of Wayland, so a lot of things needed to be implemented for the first time or even necesitated a new Wayland extention. Now that that work is nearing the end, Linux Mint can piggy back of of a lot of work from Gnome (see Marlocks comment) and look at other programs as an example, so it should be way less work.
Exactly this. GNOME were around before per-window screen capture was viable on Wayland. KDE had to push for (with support from Valve) fractional scaling and tearing extensions. GNOME, KDE, and Valve are also making big developments in the realm of proofing out colour management and HDR on Wayland, as well as VRR.

Wayland today is much different than it was 2 or 3 years ago, and is continuing to get the extensions that once received vehement pushback (such as fractional scaling). The work that GNOME and KDE have done have, for the most part, matured Wayland to a point where other desktops can now comfortably see their future on Wayland. We also shouldn't forget the excellent Wayland compositors such as Hyprland which proofed out Wayland-only applications as viable, and less relevant for GTK/Qt-based desktops, wlroots which provides common code to develop a Wayland compositor from.

The point I'm making is, Wayland isn't as much of an unknown as it was 2 years ago, thanks to the work of many to bring it up to scratch where there is no longer need for private protocols, and work can now begin on porting desktops, because the trail has been blazed by others willing to spend the last 5+ years pushing for improvements to Wayland.

Apex Legends Ignite Update broke anti-cheat on Steam Deck / Linux

Happens frequently on Windows, had a friend get banned for about a month after setting up a virtual machine. Other times it just doesn't work and another friend didn't get it fixed until he got a new PC.

I just avoid games with this garbage altogether. If it has EAC, battlEye, EOS, or similar, I steer clear.
