Editorial: Valve have not abandoned SteamOS or Linux, things are looking pretty good

Quoting: liamdaweOne thing I didn't mention is the new way Windows Store will have games in a walled garden. This is why Steam and other stores will be increasingly important.
I posted this above but this was and is the primary reason SteamOS exists. They were going to make it impossible to install any software outside of a "app store" like interface. With crazy regulations put on distribution applications like steam (not only compliance but an insane amount of the revenue) The funny thing is how many windows users got up in arms about it but the comical part is how secure it would of made windows compared to how it was/is. users are their computers own worst enemy. However thanks to MS greed we have Linux games, I'm good with that... keep making "friends" MS!

edit: derp...

I should make it clear that was the original app store model the one they're implementing now is obviously not as rigid.

Some things to remember.

SteamOS and the Linux gaming scene valve is pushing was in response to a Windows walled garden. Microsoft backed off but Valve is still working on things just not as fevered as it once was now it's more of a insurance policy with the possibility of being much more still. However the fact they didn't just walk away shows they're still interested in growing the platform.

As someone mentioned previously, games and games and more games. The Linux catalog is now more than many doomed game consoles. There will be more!

Valve + DOTA2... Okay so DOTA2 is ushering in vulkan, this is HUGE!

There are some bad points, cancellations, delays and other things (poor performant/broken games being my personal pet peeve), however as time goes on with vulkan/top tier cross platform engine based games this will hopefully start becoming less and less of an issue.

The latest Steam Hardware Survey is out

Just want to point some things out.

Truth, Valve is only interested in Linux to make sure it's game delivery system stays viable and nothing messes with their model. Once Microsoft backed off on their closed garden Valve relaxed it's efforts to push for Linux gaming as there wasn't a need but keep it around just to be sure....

Falsity, Linux isn't a viable game platform. Anything can be a viable gaming platform if even 10 years ago you thought mobile gaming would be this big you're ahead of the curve by a long shot.

Truth, Linux gaming has some serious issues... All gaming has issues otherwise games would just poof into existence by toddlers.

Falsity, Our percentage is 100% accurate... No it's not but probably at least in the ball park, I would grant .5% on a survey in a heart beat but I doubt it's anything over a percent off at any given time. Its model needs serious work.

Using radeonsi so far has yielded crashes. Not sure what's up (can't launch game). Maybe something to do with pthreads on my system as that's where the crash is occurring...

Quoting: DrMcCoyGreat, and now I'm at my parents' with my lappy that won't run it. They say "OpenGL 4.x compliant video card", and my lappy's card (965GM) won't even do OpenGL 3.x without telling Mesa to lie.

Oh, well, seems like I'll have to wait until next week to see how it does. I'm still skeptical. :P
Well after so long who would of thought they would of released it this year? I would of a put a grand on it being 2016 without a second thought.

Khronos gives an official update on Vulkan

Quoting: lvlarkI'm quite satisfied with my 7850HD's performance under RadeonSI - and I feel a bit insulted by some people here that appear to think AMD is only for mad people atm. I enjoy my Victor Vran, my BioShock Infinite, my Europa Universalis IV, my Witcher 2, and a few more - albeit all on fairly low settings. I understand that people want better performance that that - but imo, it all comes down to priorities. Just as AMD's performance is acceptable to me, others will accept the closed-source nature of NVidia. Ofcourse I'd rather see more people on my side, but to each his own.

As to Vulkan, I still hope to see it in January, even though the first I'd use it will be later - when I have the money to upgrade my system - I suppose. But the sooner it's out the gates, the faster it'll be accepted, the wider its reach will be.
Exactly this. I'm insulted this site never tests nvidia with the open drivers they're getting really good. Linux is about choice and openness and these Windows refugee clowns love to thump their e-peens about >60 fps or a 10~20 fps difference above it... I get 60+fps on high settings on most things with radeonsi and I couldn't be happier as my desktop and my driver always work well together. Hell I play some games on my HD4000 intel laptop.

Quoting: sunbeam4please guys, stop giving us (linux users) a bad name, and put the hate aside.
even if you can't play it for the christmas holidays, the main thing is we get it down the line. everybody needs a break, and we're not lacking backlog.

It's not that it's delayed it's that it's the nth to infinity time. Seriously just missed dates and broken promises I'm actually going to be more shocked when/if it ever comes out. It's pretty sad all over and if they're catching shit for fucking around with the Linux community (yet again) they probably deserve it. That being said it "sounds" like they're trying to make a solid port which I do appreciate it's just this is pretty much a flat out joke at this point.

Edit as a side note it's showing up in my Linux library now, not available message but it's a step in the right direction!

I knew this would happen, even wrote Liam for him to ask. Sadly it's par for the course.
