Firewatch: first impressions

Before I got kids I once spent an entire Saturday on the couch playing Poppin' Panda on my mobile. The game was dirt cheap and I got a lot of play time out of it, but I've regretted wasting that day ever since, and I don't think the value of a game can be judged by just how much time time you get out of it.

Thanks for writing this review. I pre-ordered the game, and have only had time to play about an hour of it, but I like it a lot so far. It sounds like we have similar tastes when it comes to player agency in these kinds of games. When a game is heavily based around the story it's aiming to tell, I much prefer that effort is put into delivering a single coherent story, rather than watering it out into multiple branches just for the sake of it.

Quoting: NilsGNThe Program File need to be made executable ...
Unfortunately, many developers forget about that (and I forgot to mention it in the article). The itch client takes care of that for you, but it doesn't support demos yet. Thanks for mentioning it in case anyone else reading this runs into the same issue.

Quoting: tuxintuxedoJust checked their Kickstarter and something caught my attention. Aside from the usual PC=Windows phrase, they will only give out beta keys for Windows and OSX. In my oppinion, this means that Linux support will come only after the other two are ready, as they won't do testing for it initially. Hope they will really deliver it eventually.
I was sharing your doubts, so I asked them on Kickstarter. Here is their answer (posted with permission) :

Now I'm going to back them as soon as I can.

If you're interested in testing you can ask them via kickstarter, they also answer very quickly!!
Thanks for checking that and for sharing a link to the article on reddit. :)

Here's a great-looking point-and-click adventure game that I hadn't seen until today:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sebastian-frank-the-beer-hall-putsch#/ [External Link]

It has a Linux demo and is a fixed funding campaign, so if it doesn't make its goal, you don't pay anything. Unfortunately, it doesn't look likely to make it at this point. If you like the demo though, it might still be worth backing it just so you get updates from the campaign.

Thanks. :) I'm curious to hear what you both think once you've given the demo/game a try.

The developer has posted an article on Gamasutra [External Link] where, among other things, she explains the art style of the game as something called "digital matte painting".

Quoting: Blackthorne519Thank you for the review, flesk! I'm looking forward to finishing up the second OotT game, too! Fortress of Fire should come out later this year. Again, thanks for playing and for writing about our game. It's a labour of love, for sure.
Glad to hear that. Thank you for making the game!

Quoting: mr-eggWhat about KDE , Kwin forcing borderless fullscreen in the window settings ?
Doing that while also using one of the graphics filters to scale up the game, I get a borderless "fullscreen" that covers most of my screen from the upper left corner. Invoking xrandr to resize the screen and kstart to force fullscreen from the launcher script might be a workaround though, but I haven't tried that (yet). I'm open to suggestions though.

I'm disappointed by the lack of communication (I'm a Kickstarter backer), but I'm also a bit amused by the absurdity of the situation. I guess we can take it as a validation of the merits of Linux as a gaming platform? I'm not mad at the developers though, and they're already dealing with some of the absolute worst crap I've ever seen on the Steam forums; especially considering the subject matter of the game. That's the Windows community for you. ;)
