Valve dev details more on the work behind making Steam for Linux more stable

Still it works now and it is still surprising it does so well. However I still feel like the Steam Client needs a lot of refactor to properly integrate with the Linux desktop as it is today.
Still no 64bit, no native Wayland support, broadcasting is still bugged, Big Picture Mode still lags on nvidia hardware and I feel like for the Deck they need to entirely reinvent the store page because the current state, trying to force the webpage on deck and somehow try to navigate with a controller is super uncomfortable to use.
Sometimes also buggy in a way that the selection indicator is somewhere off screen or in the wrong layer and controls something in the background. Sometimes the toolbar which shows the buttons to press is flashing on the store page. There are still after so many years so many little annoying buggy things which definitely need a lot of rework to the underlying client if not an entire rewrite of the software. In the end this could benefit a proper flatpak integration too.

Quoting: CatKillerYes I am pretty much aware of this. I've read the news too back then which is why I phrased it like that.Quoting: Vortex_AcheronticYet I am surprised it works in flatpak at all. Especially the Steam Runtimes which kinda are their own flatpaks inside flatpak. It didn't work, specifically because of that issue with nested bubblewrap. They made changes to both the Steam client and flatpak so that the client can negotiate to run things with flatpak's bubblewrap. And now it works.

I mean I don't have any insights on the actual source code of the client but dabbing through all it's files and directory, random libraries and shell scripts they ship it feel like they reinvented the wheel several times. I would not be surprised if the technical debs probably build up over time that there is no easy path in clean everything up except wiping everything and start from scratch and then aim for proper flatpak support.
Yet I am surprised it works in flatpak at all. Especially the Steam Runtimes which kinda are their own flatpaks inside flatpak.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualYes it is. As a Steam flatpak user I am still surprised how well it runs. For me personally better than native packages ever did. But an official flatpak support by Valve would be much appreciated. But would probably also require Valve to rework a lot of their client to do it properly I guess.Quoting: BlackBloodRumThey may be better off embracing the flatpak more closely, as it'll make it easier to port between different distributions.I don't know what the Steam client's codebase looks like, but all I can see with the Steam Flatpak manifest is black magic: https://github.com/flathub/com.valvesoftware.Steam [External Link]
What an insane amount of work for a Flatpak package.

Let's make a patent about using game engines. Then sue the s*it out of Nintendon't.
Honestly those patents are so vague, that any lawyer accepted them in the first place is borderline criminal.

Yes! Hope ProtonUp-Qt or ProtonPlus add support for it soon if they haven't already. *Happy GT 730M noises*
Edit: ProtonPlus has already add support for it. *Yey!*

Quoting: ElectricPrismAgreed. Steam and apparently Valve are awesome! I just hope they will not change direction some day in the future if maybe Lord GabeN is no more :/Steam games will now need to fully disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pagesReasons like these are why I continue to patron Steam and make it rain . No other store even comes close.
(GOG is my second favorite. After the Internet is cancelled over "The New Red Scare" I'll happily be playing my mountain of games offline for quite some time.

Quoting: robvvYeah thought of it too. But then remembered I use systemd-boot, TPM 2.0 FDE and secure boot on Aeon. Even the official driver package was a bit flunky at first during install and updating. So I decided to not break my system and wait patiently :DQuoting: Vortex_AcheronticI am really starving for explicit sync but 560 is still NFB or Beta. Neither or which are packaged by openSUSE(Checks repo) You're not wrong! For my Tumbleweed system I've created a small script to update my drivers 'the hard way' as I like to have the latest release installed.
Which reminds me ... I believe there was a question lately on the bug tracker. *moves out*
