Quoting: denyasis... the fact that we rely on something like ProtonDB means that new users are going have to dive into settings on an OS they don't understand and hopefully not mess it up.

I'm not trying to say news users are dumb or anything. Messing with wine/proton prefixes isn't exactly an easy part of our OS. As much as Valve tries to solve it, that burden is still there for a lot of games.

For this part, I'm quite sure Valve is having something up it's sleeve that we haven't yet seen anywhere, just like AC support and their internal Proton build that seems to support more games than what is available, atm.

Otherwise, they cannot pretend it's a mass market product.

My reasons are quite similar to Liam's. I have a capable gaming computer on my desk and I rarely sit in front of it to game (unless it's a racing sim, because racing wheel). The vast majority of my gaming is done in front of my TV with the Steam Link app or Stadia... But sometimes, the TV is not available (It happens when you have a family with 3 kids), so picking up the Steam Deck is someting I look forward to, BIG TIME! It will probably become my main gaming rig.

Even when the day comes when the Steam Deck won't be powerfull enough, anymore, it will make for a fantastic handheld streaming device, imo.

Thanks Valve for giving us this opportunity.

Well the design of this was probably done before they got hit with that patent lawsuit. On the other hand perhaps they think that this new design isn't violating the patent or they have managed to license the patent (unlikely).

Who knows? It might not be considered a game controller, it's a handheld computer! :wink:

Most likely, Valve will probably pay for the rights to use the tech.

... And in the video, it's also said that the public version of proton is lagging behind in support (thousands of game tests and AC support), if I get it right.

I mean, they are also directly working with nvidia to make DLSS compatible with DLSS and all that stuff.

They also said that they hope that other vendors will join the market and produce their own handheld PCs and I'm sure that some of them would want to use nvidia instead of AMD.

Probably, but it could become a model where every hardware vendor will support it's own hardware and where DIY are left on their own. I mean, where there is no "centralized initiative"... Maybe ChimeraOS will have a say to cover that gap?

I'm probably just overthinking it. Just wondering what the SteamOS landscape may look like and what to expect... Probably, nothing really worrying, in fact.
