7 years later, Valve's Proton has been an incredible game-changer for Linux

Happy 7 years to Proton!

I remember trying out Proton early on with a laptop and was kind of impressed with the games I was playing but it was far from perfect since it either crashed or showed a black screen. Eventually, those same games now work perfectly on the later version of it.

Got to hand it to Valve, CodeWeavers and everyone else involved in getting Proton working as well as it does today and the amount of effort continues to pay off. Now, let's see if Proton can finally get to a point where it can handle those kernel anti-cheats and video codecs that don't play nice on it.

Steam Survey for July 2025 shows Linux approaching 3%

Always great to see progress towards 3% for Linux as more and more people are starting to ditch Windows. It would be nice to have a CachyOS avatar since I've been using it more and more on my systems.

Here's the most played games on Steam Deck for July 2025

It's not surprising that the usual suspects are listed in the most played games on Steam Deck, with some new titles that'll come and go.

Battlefield 6 will be a unplayable on Linux systems due to the anti-cheat
1 Aug 2025 at 5:23 pm UTC

This shouldn't be too surprising given that they added their kernel anti-cheat to Battlefield 4 and 5 last year and this is just a continuation of that for Battlefield 6. If this game is on Geforce Now, assuming that they do it like the other Battlefield titles, that's one option for those that want to play the game.

Good thing I got most of my gaming done on the Steam Deck for both Battlefield 4 and 5 before they implemented the kernel anti-cheat. As of now, I'm not going to give EA money for this one since this series doesn't hold my interest.

Hellraiser game announced with Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival

We need a Phantasm game.
@thewho
If only they done this a long time ago while the Tall Man was still alive because he could've been the voice for the game. I guess they'll have to use AI to generate his voice unless they can find someone to play his role.

felix86 emulator for Linux for x86 and x86-64 apps on RISC-V can now run Steam and major games

This is great to hear about an emulator that can run x86 and x86_64 apps on RISC-V. Now, if only we can get more RISC-V hardware available to everyone to use.

Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition has arrived and Steam Deck Verified

this might be the first ever complex rpg I would consider for the Deck. I still to this day can't fathom how people can play stuff like bg3 on a tiny screen with a controller, but it remains one of the top played games. So I must be totally crazy. This games graphics won't stress the deck at all, and as long as the UI is decent with a controller scheme, it could be fun nostalgia.
@R Daneel Olivaw
It's possible that they dock it and use the keyboard and mouse to play it or create key mappings using the trackpads and every button on the Steam Deck like some people do for RTS and FPS games.

GeForce NOW on Steam Deck really can be a game-changer

Besides, there is one great big negative to using GFN -- the ongoing subscription fee! You pay it whether or not you're able to use it ...
@Caldathras
Actually, you don't have to pay to use GFN because they do have a free account that allow you play for one hour but you have to wait in a queue with video ads. The way the free account works is that if you play for one hour and get booted off, you can replay the same game or any other game for another hour without any limitation.

If you pay for a Priority subscription, you can get faster access to playing your game for six hours of gameplay up to 1440p and if you get booted out after six hours, you can either replay the same game or choose a different game to play. If you want the best of everything, then you'd go Ultimate subscription for a higher fee that gives you eight hours of gameplay, raytracing, 4K and 240 fps. In both cases, there is a 100 hour limit (previously, there were no limits) that rolls over to 15 additional hours every month.

I use the free account often when I don't want to pay for a subscription to get faster access with the bells and whistles and I have enough patience to wait in a queue.

It's a shame you can now only play games that are approved. When it started you could play your whole library but publishers complained. I don't see why publishers should get to dictate what I play the games I've paid for on.
@ObsoleteGaming
I remember reading about this back then when Geforce Now was new and these companies didn't like that you could stream your entire library of Steam games because they wanted a piece of the Nvidia pie when it comes to licensing. They want Nvidia to pony up money for a license to run the games the publishers want to allow on the service.

Here's a Reddit threat that someone asked about why they couldn't stream all their Steam games on Geforce Now: https://www.reddit.com/r/GeForceNOW/comments/19018ca/why_cant_we_just_stream_any_game_we_own/ [External Link]
