MONSTER HUNTER RISE adds new DRM that breaks it on Steam Deck (UPDATED)
22 Jan 2024 at 2:54 pm UTC

Quoting: melkemindInevitably, the "pirates" crack the DRM, so the only people DRM ends up hurting are the paying customers.
That's not quite the case anymore with Denuvo.

Quoting: BlackBloodRumOh.. cool. It looks like they're giving a discount on it too for old people like me, who own the originals ones![1]
I wouldn't have noticed that discount, honestly (apparently it's 20% off on the preorder instead of the regular 10%, for anyone wondering).

Still not buying until I know what I'm getting.
Quoting: PenglingHonestly, I have no real familiarity with Aspyr, aside from remembering them being a big name back when I was a Mac user, and how they recently got into legal trouble for false advertising [External Link]. I'm just cautious after Capcom's recent addition of undeclared DRM to a bunch of older releases. That's good to know, though - thanks!
Aspyr got overexcited, I think, and failed to consider the red tape. Mods are grey area at best, and they tried to release one (and get it certified by Nintendo, AND likely approved by certain other third parties, I'd imagine) as official dlc. There's no way they didn't have that working and couldn't release it for any reason other than someone or something external explicitly stopping them from doing so. What they intended to release and got sued for not releasing you can get working - PC aside - with the android port, and you can still install it on the Switch yourself, if you jailbreak the device.

VCMI, open-source engine for Heroes of Might and Magic III v1.4.3 brings lots of bug fixes

Looks like no Hota 1.7 yet, but work is progressing. Maybe next time!
HTOA 1.7 was release the 31 December 2023 :)

And factory campaign is hard. (but I'm bad at this game)
I don't think HTOA is playable in VCMI though, but nice to see an update here.
Yeah, that's what I meant: no 1.7 for VCMI, with this being a post about VCMI and all :)

I wonder how this is going to play with modernised controls. The old games were very measured, deliberate, designed with precision in mind, so if those running jumps get less frustrating to execute I'd imagine that, say, all the ledge-to-ledge hops forward where you knew the exact distance of a jump and used that to your advantage might become a bit... fiddly in turn?

I'm glad they're offering a choice - that's a good sign.

Expansions are the big deal for me. Hopefully, that Times level is coming with TR4.

Not to mention: I hope this is functional. After the many technological trainwrecks of 2023 especially I just assume that it won't be, and hope to be proven wrong.

Stellaris stopped working for months for me. Got patched eventually...

Not a good track record all around for Paradox in recent years.

Quoting: suchNever heard of Double Eleven before, so I started digging... and this appears to be a support studio. Lots of ports, made stuff for other games, published an indie, but nothing remotely suggesting they have what it takes to make a game like this (which is not easy to make).

Tl;dr: not the PA1 dev, no experience in the genre (from what they share), and the latest in a slew of (poorly made) games published by PDX...

I'd be cautious.
They have been working on the first Prison Architect since 2016, initially to port it to consoles (that was before Paradox got the license!) and then were brought by Paradox to update the game and develop new content - I think they made all the DLC released for it (a few mid-sized expansions afaik, haven't played any of them). I'd guess that for all purposes they were the studio that got the PA license after the sale.

So yes they used to be a support studio working on ports and making stuff for existing games - including Prison Architect. So they do have experience not only in this genre but in this very franchise... which is not necessarily reassuring, as they mostly did DLC and the original design came from Introversion which was a very different company.
Huh, that's interesting. Not a peep about any of this here, oddly enough:

That PDX DLC is much maligned in the community from what I've seen - as stuff just bolted onto the game for no other reason than to sell more of said stuff.

So... we'll see. Hopefully it's good. Worst case scenario I'll try to find the latest Introversion build of PA1. I did play a bit of it back then, so it's been quite some time.

She's also making music for an upcoming MMO. Not my bag, but her music very much is.
