That last paragraph.
You're right.
Didn't think of that. :/
In particular the id Software guys put Vulkan to really good use.
Would be interesting to see if they'll be forced to change their backend.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 is out today, some details for you (plus new driver release)

Quoting: bisbyxFor $700 in 1.5 months, AMD is not going to go roll out something noticeably faster than the 3080.
At $700, I don't care about +/- $50.
n.B. Now compare that to people arguing how 1 % Linux share (in Steam) must be still SO important to devs and Valve BECAUSE OF THE ABSOLUTE AMOUNT!

Quoting: bisbyxI want to agree with you. But for people who dont care about nvidia vs AMD. For $700 in 1.5 months, AMD is not going to go roll out something noticeably faster than the 3080. They might roll something out at $700 but the same speed, or they might roll something out 20% faster than 3080... but costs more.

And at that point, you've just waited 1.5 months to get something that is roughly equal.
The reason it's sensible to wait isn't because you're necessarily expecting AMD to release something that will blow Ampere away.

I don't regret my purchase of a 2080 Ti in the slightest: I've had two years of excellent gaming performance, and I'll likely have several more. But if, at the time, AMD had anything to offer that was in the same ballpark, or even competitive with the 1080 Ti, it would likely have been a darn sight cheaper.

In a couple of months' time, if AMD can show that they're in the game, perhaps Nvidia will slash prices, or perhaps they'll release Ti versions. It's worth waiting even if you're planning to get an Nvidia card.
Thank you. This was *exactly* my point. :)

Despite not even remotely considering Nvidia products for myself,
someone not waiting for AMD's release (soon) before buying a 30XX must be outright crazy. :D

Borderlands 2 will see no further updates for Linux / macOS from Aspyr Media

There is not much positive in Proton in the mid to long term.
I never drank that Kool-Aid.

Just think for a moment that MS releases a new, significantly different, Direct3D version,
that in contrast to Direct3D 12 gets wide adoption.
We can't be so sure compatibility layers will be able to catch up fast.
Currently, this dependency might have been shadowed by the very slow advances of Direct3D
over the last years and many new games still support Direct3D < 12.

This is damn complex tech.

My experiences of Valve's VR on Linux

Quoting: ElectroDDConcerning the motion sickness in FPS, I tried alien isolation.
It's not motion sickness you experience, but the strange feeling that your legs are not moving while you move creating a feeling of weirdness in your brain and you kind of lose sense of orientation and tend to believe you're falling.
It takes some hours (2-3 for me ) to adjust, but after that, really neat experience even though the VR experience is kind of experimental in it, you get the free movement experience non the less.
It was on an occulus rift first gen on windows when I still was running win10.
Btw, is there a way to get Alien Isolation running with VR on the Index?
(A way that someone has tried and can confirm it is working well.)

Great!

I haven't been using the Index for almost 2 weeks by now.
Was it bearable during the heat wave we currently have?

I could hardly stand the massive sweating when it was way cooler.

Quoting: beguiSurprised he is still supporting Linux considering his statements in the past.. Glad to see it coming.. fantastic game..
This was an external port by Icculus.

Blow wanted to be part of the back then quite lucrative Humble Indie Bundle.
But this required to have a native Linux build.
He most likely hated Linux already at that time - it was just for the money and I guess it paid.

I bet he simply wants to avoid a shitstorm by not supporting Linux with the update.
Probably not such a big code change anyhow.

But I wouldn't expect him to support Linux with any new project.

This was such a good game and still is.
