Microsoft Build - DirectX and Linux (WSL) plus more

intel have their own distribution wich is the only one who can take full advantage of their processors in some niche of the market.
IBM has their own distro and you can bet that there are some asic on their processor, or some transistors only acessible by their distro.
and so on, EVERYONE extends linux, that is why no one can extinguish it.
android is linux, but it has its own ecosystem completely independ from the desktop, stadia is linux but it has it own ecosystem that is only acessible via streaming, they are even making games like roblox/mario maker where you create content to be played on it...
my tv runs linux, so what? it has an free kernel with an proprietary UI that i can change, and the system is locked to an app store with a few apps that i can install on it and nothing more.
my router runs linux, and its pretty much the same, a few built-in functionalities and nothing more.
an air-drone runs linux, and they dont even have an official software to control it from an linux device...
where is the freedom on that?
do you see the patern here?
every one use linux either as an single apliance or to as the base to run e applications of their own ecosystem.
everyone creating their own extensions only avaliable on their ecosystem...
in other words:
google is extending linux with android.
microsoft will be extending linux with their own distro.
everyone will be using linux, and we will have some base in common such as libraries to build softwares on top of...
but most of the ecosystem that is what really matter may be exclusive to some apis, services, or system.

Quoting: Ehvisits far worse than that.Quoting: Liam DaweBut the landscape is different. EEE applied to things microsoft could control in some way. The battle fought against Linux was lost long ago and the foothold that Linux has in the total market is way too big for EEE to work. Sure they can do the first E. They can try to do the second E, but it is doomed to fail because it won't find significant adoption. Which means the third one is out of the question.Quoting: EhvisNever say never when it's Microsoft. Changed in some ways, not at all in others ;)How long before extinguish phase starts?Never. Not because they don't want to, but because the importance of Linux as a whole is way bigger that than the worst-of-both-worlds WSL system can ever be. It simply doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
You could argue that trying to pull developers from Linux to stick with Windows, and just use WSL for ML/AI/CUDA is part of an extinguish strategy. It is when you think of it quite literally, as keeping people on WSL where they control it. All depends on your point of view and what we're referencing when we say extinguish.
To me the whole WSL thing is a curiosity. They made a Linux kernel work on Windows in a VM like manner, but what is the point? To have your Linux service go down with a windows update? Making things dependent on two systems instead of one is a guaranteed way to make it less reliable. As a whole WSL actually looks the same as Stadia. Sure, there is a narrow niche that might see an advantage in it and would use it, but it is not objectively better and will therefore be ignored by the big crowds.

also, WSL dont help linux desktop.
WSL makes windows have all the features of linux desktop, wich means no one would see an reason to use linux instead.

Yell orders through your microphone in Radio General now with Linux voice support

"As it turns out, the original release didn't have the voice command support on Linux. However, developer Foolish Mortals kept tinkering with the code and it now does have full Linux support for that side of the game. Note: Voice recognition only available in English. After testing it out thanks to the developer providing a key, I'm absolutely hooked on it."
1)this is speach recognition, not voice recognition.
voice recognition: means recognize who said something, (this is useful for login systems where only the owner can login)
speach recognition:means what has being said.
if you combine both, you can know who said what even in the middle of an crowd.
2)as i said before, speach recognition is an platform, much like CLI and GUI create an interface between the user and the application, speach recognition creates too.
its quite usefull for personal assistants or games like this, i'm a bit disapointed with linux for not evolving the platforms in other directions than GUI options, microsoft has invested for years in speach recgonition and google too with android, but linux desktop? nope, we had it for free on chrome but now google is charging developers who want to use it as an API.
i hope mycroft can improve their system and support languages other than english with an good accuracy (that is the bigest challenge with speach rec), i dont know what this game is using as backend but i suspect its mycroft, its a shame that most of linux companies couldnt find an way to make money but to sell the technology embeded to an hardware, being able to use it on pc and interface with other programs would be much more usefull than having an "amazon echo" ish device doing a few "useless" tasks.
after you did an sucesfull capture, pasring what has being said is as easy as to do an string comparission or an CLI system, that is, if you are very specific with the commands (say exact that word sequence) but if you want to process natural language? wel good luck with that, passing the turing test is a challenge that we will never solve.
"It's one thing to play a strategy game, it's another to bark orders down a microphone as if you know what you're doing. Getting strange looks from people aside, it's genuinely good fun and it adds a new layer of entertainment to such a strategy game."
that sounds fun, i already tried to make an game like this, but got stuck when my creativity run over...

that is great, but i wish valve purchase something like VRChat and port it to linux, in the end of the day, "content is king", VRchat for example is becoming an machine to make memes (and the internet is moved by memes, so the linux adoption will be greatly hurt if we cant have things like this) And VRChat also sounds like an fun place to be in.
i wonder how it is to launch and quit VR Aplications/games from an VR desktop enviroment.
