Solus 4.3 released with refreshed apps, desktop environments and new hardware support
15 Jul 2021 at 1:10 pm UTC

I have a real love-hate relationship with Solus. Their Apple-like approach to certain things really gives you some guarantee of stability, but at the same time it can feel somewhat restrictive for a Linux distro. And the developers are a bit "opinionated" for certain things. It feels like a distro you'd best use for work, but if you want to fiddle - go with Manjaro (unless you are an Arch elder god). If my graphics editing suite was actually working on Linux, I'd be running Solus full time. I'd take it over Unbuntu or any of it's derivatives, any day (sorry, Mint, we had some good times).

Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) rolls out to everyone and it works on Linux

Quoting: morbiusI read this, check out the link, turns out Microsoft offers Xbox Game Pass Ultimate 3 month subscription for only $1. Ok, for that kind of money I'm willing to take a chance. So I subscribe and only then it lets me know that Xbox Cloud Gaming is not available in Greece. Oh Microsoft, what a peace of shit you are.
Yeah, they really make you work for it, but the second I saw they only support 22 countries, I knew they didn't cover the Balkans, yet. Btw, have you tried GFN? It was fine for me to begin with, but ever since they set a new data center in Sofia, it's been really, really good for me and I am on the literal opposite end of Bulgaria. So, distance wise, if you're in continental Greece you should have pretty similar experience to me (islands are probably a different story, altogether). For reference it was good with me using cable connection and it's great since I upgraded to 300mbit/s fiber. Works fairly reasonable even over 5Ghz WiFi. Hope that helps.

Quoting: BlooAlienWhile Valve does not offer cloud gaming, they do offer a pretty solid streaming solution that I have found works fine over a WireGuard VPN tunnel. Sadly, setting up such a tunnel setup does (currently) require a bit of networking knowledge and other geeky skills to get running proper. The advantage once set up though is that I can play all my Steam games pretty much anywhere I have a tolerable enough Internet connection, as long as I've left my PC running at home with Steam up and running.
That's a bit apples to oranges comparison, IMO. And I say that as somebody who to this day uses his hardware Steam Link (it just works better than the app, period). As far as remote streaming goes, Parsec also works well for me, but I think they don't have a host option for Linux.

Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games sees a small bug fix release ahead of the big 1.8

Quoting: Liam DaweThat is, unless they embed a limited CEF-like browser into it that points to the Epic Store itself.
Not a bad idea, actually.

Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games sees a small bug fix release ahead of the big 1.8

Quoting: Mumrik93One of my friends plays a lot of games from epic and he pretty much always complains about the Epic Launcher/Store, so I was just curious, how much on par with the Epic Launcher/Store is the Heroic Games Launcher? So it below? On par? or even better then the Epic Games Launcher/Store itself?
Probably better. The Epic Launcher is not terrible, per se. Just extremely barebones. On Windows I use GOG Galaxy 2.0 for my Epic games. I do like how user friendly Heroic launcher is. I honestly think that the developer should apply for an Epic grant. No hate for the Lutris guys, but this is just so much more user friendly that Lutris, IMO.

Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS, EndeavourOS 2021.02.03 and Solus 4.2 out now

Ah, Solus. One day somebody will make the Affinity suite work with Proton and you can finally be my daily driver. Until then, I'm stuck with Windows, I'm afraid :(.

Google's game streaming service Stadia arrives in more countries

Quoting: UnixOutlawDANG! Did any fellow Aussies see "Austria..." and at first misread it as Australia?

I did... Doh!

Crap... BD3 on Linux via Stadia?

But still not enough to make me subscribe to a VPN service, and thanks again to the NBN for my sh!tty VDSL / NBN hybrid (mongrel bastard more like it) broadband connection - thanks Turnbull + Abbott (I'm paying for 50mpbs and lucky to get 28mpbs so no point subscribing to a 100 mbit plan).

Australia - a digital backwater...
I get why the internet is expensive in Australia - a remote continent with sparse population. But it's also the third richest country in terms of overall natural resources. You'd think your government would heavily subsidize it to compenste and make high speed internet more accessible.

I've played way too many hours of instagib in this game, back in the day :)

SteamTinkerLaunch is a huge all in one Linux wrapper tool for gaming

Quoting: slaapliedjeYeah I want a phone that's all cli.

How faster would it be to be able to type 'call john_doe' instead of having to click contacts, scroll through a huge list, hopefully click on the right one and then press the call button?

sms john_doe "hey bro, what's up?"

or

echo "hey bro, what's up?" | sms john_doe
Pretty sure voice dial will always win :)

SteamOS-like Linux distribution GamerOS has a new release, adds in Epic Game Store support

Quoting: mao_dze_dunGamerOS (that name IS stupid)
About the name, there is huge thread on discord about the dev asking feedback and suggestions for names, but and actually it's really difficult to find a good one. Most are taken by other gaming or semi-gaming related websites / products, or focus on a non-core feature of the OS.

No good one has been found yet (or at least when I looked at it 1-2 months ago)

I always find it easier to remember names when they are not generic, so maybe they should just pick up something that is completely removed from gaming.

SteamOS-like Linux distribution GamerOS has a new release, adds in Epic Game Store support

Quoting: MohandevirThe problem is not fragmentation. I got nothing against that. The problem is Epic with it's garbage propaganda and dubious practices. It would be the last storefront I would support, personnally. Unfortunately, many seem to forget that we vote with our wallets, when it comes to Epic. Sure thing, they won't get a dime from me.

How does it goes? "Epic sees the mote in other's eye, but can't see the beam in it's own."

This said, good job for GamerOS! Awesome console OS!
The great thing is you are in no way obliged to use it, so your user experience is in no way affected. People like me who do not imnd the Epic store, will appreciate it. I'd say that's a win-win. And I suggest we leave it at that as I really know how things go when somebody says something good about Epic around here :).
