Unreal Engine 4.25 is up with tons of Linux improvements and Vulkan API fixes

Quoting: mphuZ
Quoting: DisharmonicSo all UE4 games on WIndows will be Metro apps or am I misunderstanding that?
Original:

We are officially deprecating our Win32 support. It will be included in Unreal Engine 4.25 and Unreal Engine 4.26, but support for 32-bit Windows operating systems will be removed in a future release.
That sounds vague to me. They will either stop supporting 32-bit systems, or switch to UWP completely.
Win32 in UE is not the same as the Win32 platform you might be thinking of. Unreal uses win32/win64 naming simply for 32/64bit. It means they're retiring 32bit building. Not that any of that matters to us...

Stadia finally gets wireless Stadia Controller support in the web browser

I does feel a wee bit snappier on the first-person aiming.

Software news: Inkscape finally hits 1.0 and Krita 4.3.0 gets a first Beta
5 May 2020 at 1:35 pm UTC

Quoting: CheesenessExciting times! I used Inkscape for some (now retired) graphics that Liam asked me to do for the site almost a decade ago. I can't recall now, but I think they were based on existing art that someone else had done that there weren't source files for.

Since I've been digging up old artwork [External Link] to share in celebration of the 1.0 launch, here's a quick look at one those for anybody who's interested.

I'm sure that Inkscape's been used for plenty of GOL artwork since, but that's a story for other artists to share ^_^
Hah wow, what a classic piece!

You can now use the Discord Overlay on Linux thanks to a new community project
4 May 2020 at 6:05 pm UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: CJORIf it was for streaming, it doesn't make sense to me.
The site https://streamkit.discord.com/overlay [External Link] works since ever and the only important thing is the generated link. If you understand how the link works, you no longer need the site.
As always when stuff like this comes up: you knowing doesn't mean everyone else does, never underestimate the power and usefulness of someone making something super simple for everyone else. We've streamed using Discord for voice ever since Discord came to Linux - and this has never been mentioned until now.

Quoting: CJORIf it's the same thing, but this one is shown in the game, it's fine. Useful for people who don't stream.
I totally did miss mentioning that in the article, so it's been added to be clear. Hopefully now it is :)

Seeds of Chaos, an adult (NSFW) dark fantasy tale with RPG & Strategy elements is now on Linux

Quoting: rustybroomhandleHeh, don't take this too seriously, but I find the tag "NSFW" amusing. Are there any games that are "safe for work"? I imagine even Candy Crush would get you in trouble.
Heh, you do raise a good point. Still, it's pretty much the universally used term for more graphics stuff (both nudity, violence and such) so we're rolling with the tag to make it as clear as possible.

May the Fourth be with you - a look over what Star Wars games are playable on Linux
4 May 2020 at 1:16 pm UTC

Quoting: EhvisI thought this would be a good reason to finally have a look at KOTOR2. Apparently not. It doesn't do anything. Just starts, no window and the process sits there sleeping. No errors, no logs, nothing.

Anybody that can still get this to work?
Worked first time here.

Classic Westwood strategy games live on as 'OpenRA' has a new major stable release

EA is remastering the c&c titles atm.

No, they specifically reached out to the OpenRA community and developers about it. They can't touch OpenRA anyway, it's not using their code.

Monster-catching, dungeon-crawling RPG 'Siralim Ultimate' hits Kickstarter - funded in 1 hour
3 May 2020 at 10:22 am UTC

Quoting: DragunovI bought the first Siralim thinking that it was going to be like Dragon Warrior Monsters but I was kind of disappointed. I don't like how the enemy monsters only move when you do. I thought that was very annoying and pretty much ruined the game for me. I liked the random encounters of the original Dragon Warrior Monster games a lot better.

Are all of the Siralim games like this?
Yes, they're pretty much turn-based roguelikes.

Quoting: KuJoPUBG in Stadia.

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER. :D
Can you play that together with friends on Steam in some way?
No, PUBG on Stadia is Stadia to Stadia with keyboard/mouse or Stadia + Consoles if you're using gamepad.
So but at least you should have PUBG on Linux and a cheater free experience I guess.
I am sure, cheats will come (perhaps some Chrome plugins that fake a Controller while playing with mouse and keyboard or whatever)

Is there a way to play with friends that are on Stadia?
Cheating is practically impossible. Even with plugins, it's still not something it can really analyse since it's a glorified video feed with input. I will be amazed if it's somehow possible. It's another reason why Stadia for multiplayer games is quite interesting.

Yes you can play easily with friends on Stadia, it has a friends list feature and leaks from the Android app have shown text-chat in the friends list is coming soon too (it already has built-in voice chat).

Quoting: orochi_kyoIt is funny to see any of these GOG fanboys actually talking about Stadia when Cloud Gaming is the perfect form of DRM, I mean Google did what Denuvo never achieved.

It is pretty clear that the anti-Gaben vibe is strong around here. But Im quite sure they will be around when Steam release some form of cloud gaming.
Sorry, but nobody in this thread mentioned GOG, so I'm not sure what you're upset about. I don't suppose you could use less, for lack of a better term, combative wording?

It is worth pointing out flaws inherent in Stadia. Like I alluded to: some of the control issues with Turing Test might possibly be resolved with a local installation.
It's also worth pointing out benefits of Stadia. Some games play just fine through it, virtually no difference to a local installation, and without annoying load times. Local computing requirements are also far less.

Google also are proving that a GNU/Linux based system is viable for "AAA" gaming, in a manner that Valve never achieved.
Add to that:

I can play the exact same games on my Manjaro desktop as I can on my Ubuntu laptop over a wireless connection. I can then also play those same games on my sofa on my big screen TV. There's a HUGE convenience factor to it.

While it may not result in desktop Linux ports, we can probably all agree the affect of having a ton more developers use the open Vulkan API will be a positive one for the industry as a whole. It can help improve Vulkan in game engines, get more people learning it and perhaps when the Linux desktop market share rises we might see better Linux versions (and improved drivers too...).
