Steam Deck pushed Linux to the highest share on Steam in years

the vast majority of gamers on Steam Deck are sticking to SteamOS which goes to show just how good it is as an experience overall
And how bad of an experience Windows is.

SteamOS is pretty good (not perfect at all tho), but honestly, it would have to be pretty damn bad for Windows to be the better option.
Windows is fine on desktops, but on touch devices and even more so on handheld devices such as the Deck (gamepad + touch) it just doesn't cut it.
Let me begin by making it clear I hate Windows. There, now that's out of the way I can mention how Valve recently added the ability to use game mode aka the new big picture mode to the desktop client. This means windows users are able to use the new SteamOS UI, even boot right into it if they want.

I wonder if there's any chance it also fixed Chronotrigger frame hitching every few second?

Steam Deck UI comes to Desktop in Beta to replace Big Picture Mode
28 Oct 2022 at 6:35 pm UTC

This is super cool, glad to see they're finally replacing the old Big Picture Mode. I used it exclusively for Steam on the TV in my living room for years until my gaming PC went on the fritz.

I've tried this beta with the flag and for me somehow it has replaced Desktop mode as well! Steam boots right into the new Big Picture mode. I think this may be due to a workaround I had previously configured to force Steam into the SteamIU long before this beta.

I really enjoyed Graveyard Keeper, great for those on in Stardew Valley withdrawal pain. It is not a clone, it's own thing to be certain, but similar in many ways. It's got some great irreverent and dark humor.

It is going to be a streaming service. I know we don't like streaming services, but I'm calling it now, steaming service.

You know what's awesome for streaming services? NOT FPS games!!! No, turn-based games. Perfect match for game streaming.

Steam Deck Beta update tweaks notifications, boot video length upped to 30 seconds

Valve is so cool for noticing how much fun people are having making and adding custom boot videos and making it easier, then making it easier to add longer videos too.

The only thing missing now is to make them skippable!!!

Quoting: BlackBloodRumI mean for example, let's take VPN connections. You simply can't set them up in KDE because OpenVPN/WireGuard isn't installed by default, if you put that into distrobox, you still won't be able to get a system-wide VPN connection.

Of course, if you enable "development" mode you can put OpenVPN or WireGuard in there, but as soon as the next SteamOS update is released those changes are wiped and you'll have to manually install them again.
Wireguard is available in the KDE network settings. It was one of the first bits I setup, so that I can access my home network and its media remotely. Haven't had to tinker with it since I did, through multiple updates. OpenVPN and pretty much any other protocol I might want is listed there too when I checked.
Were you able to set up a VPN on Deck without disabling the immutable file system? If so, would you mind sharing how?
Of course. Just go to the KDE settings, then network, then connections. Click the + and choose which VPN, add the config. You can import config files too. And you can set individual network connections to chainload VPNs automatically after they connect.
I meant can you connect to a commercial VPN service like PIA or NordVPN? You are using your own private VPN to access your files remotely I guess.
I am, though my traffic back via my home also gets routed back out via a commercial service. If they don't have a flatpak for their own app, they likely offer the config info to just set it all up yourself. I've rarely used the apps anyway, on Linux or Android, instead I just manually enter everything I need for the connection.
Ah, I've just tried it via their proffered configuration file and I get a popup notification which says missing VPN plugin. Oh well. Searching online, it doesn't appear there is a solution for this, hopefully I'm wrong. Maybe Liam could make a guide at some point, that would be helpful.
