Ubuntu needs feedback on some possible major WiFi changes

Quoting: NanobangIs iwd even open source?

I love Ubuntu, but gawds it makes me crazy sometimes.
Quoting: tuubiIt wouldn't have a damn git repo on kernel.org if it wasn't open source, now would it?
Frankly, I don't know.

I did follow links there from Liam's article; I know nothing about kernel.org --- and really, still don't; though I looked at the page you linked [External Link]. I didn't see anything about what license iwd was or wasn't being released under, I made no decisions one way or another. What I did see on that page, at the very top was:
Copyright (C) 2013-2019 Intel Corporation. All rights reserved.
Quoting: tuubiiwd is simply better than wpa_supplicant

Thanks for telling me that, I'll just take your word for that then, shall I? Because Lukas Märdian's post quite clearly states that iwd hasn't even fully reached feature parity with wpa_supplicant, that iwd merely offers "potential benefits" over wpa_supplicant. I didn't say iwd isn't better, just that that's not what's being stated.

Quoting: tuubiNote that this isn't a Canonical project.
Yeah, I got that it's Intel's thing, but the decision to use it is being made by the same Canonical cum Ubuntu crew that's given us all those previous NIH moments you mentioned.

I don't like the way this all sounds like it's already such a done deal, a fait accompli; like it's not a matter of if Ubuntu's going to move to iwd, but only a matter of when.

It would be one thing if this Lukas Märdian were asking users to test out iwd because it was being considered as a replacement for wpa_supplicant. Fine, let's give it a shot. But that's not what Lukas is asking at all. Lukas is asking users to see if iwd is "ready for prime time," that is, if it's ready to become Ubuntu's new default.

Why is this even happening? Iwd isn't better than wpa_supplicant. There's no promise that it ever will be better. There's just some vague hand-waving and talk of "potential."

Does Canonical make these decisions using a Magic 8-ball? [External Link]

Question: "O Magic 8-ball, should we make our own mobile phone from scratch?"

*shake, shake, shake*

Answer: "Signs point to yes."

Intel's dedicated gaming GPU releases in 2021, plus 10nm SuperFin is coming

Hmmm, will an Intel GPU have the sort of Intel security issues we've come to expect in recent years?

Dying Light - Hellraid is out now giving you a little dungeon crawling
14 Aug 2020 at 11:53 am UTC

Will it be a dungeon crawler with parkour mechanics --- a dungeon parkour-er if you will? Ok, obviously there's not going to be a lot of running-across-rooftop opportunities in a dungeon, but those are some pretty nicely carved walls I see in the pictures!

I'm stoked to get all my eldritch ichor all over the puny hoo-mans! Seriously, just looking at this it's clearly a masterpiece of animation and graphic design, so heartening to know this sort of thing can still happen.

Designed for big-screen TV gaming, the SteamOS-like 'GamerOS' has a new release
23 Jul 2020 at 1:17 pm UTC

I'd love to be able to try using this as an alternative Steam client, would that it were possible to try GamerOS out in a VM. At the end of the day, I use my couch computer as so much more than a game machine, to wit, I'm using it right now to write this. GamerOS looks really nice, though!

Linux distro Fedora 33 may get DXVK as the default for Wine
22 Jul 2020 at 12:10 pm UTC

Quoting: Alm888I absolutely hope it gets rejected.

The last thing I want in the distro I use is some 3rd-party fork instead of upstream version. Otherwise WINE won't have any patches from Fedora anymore, as (rumor has it) DXVK does not play nice with WINE, outright conflicting with its libraries.

You can down-vote me to hell (well, except you can't ;) ), but I am firmly on WINE's side in their conflict.

DXVK guy is nobody and nothing without WINE (he can go sell his library to Windows users for all I care; I've heard it works on Windows™), he is in no position to bring incompatibility in a piece of software that: a) existed long before he even started his project; and b) enabled a lot of critical Windows™ applications to work in Linux (Winamp with its plug-ins, many of which have no Linux alternative, custom-built game resources extractors, banking software).

Prioritizing some custom upsetream-incompatible library over vanilla version is like a tail wagging a dog!

Everyone who absolutely WANTS DXVK-version can go to… Steam and install Proton™!!!
I'm not familiar with Fedora, so I don't know how they do things, but --- if this were to happen --- couldn't you get Wine directly from WineHQ and use that? I'm on Ubuntu and I've always done that because the version in the Ubuntu repos has historically been pretty out-of-date. Not arguing, just wondering.

What have you been playing recently? We've been tinkering with a Raspberry Pi 4

Still playing Dying Light with my friend, finished the campaign and just started on the Following yesterday. On my own I've restarted Subnautica, but in freedom mode, without the need to eat and drink. The failure of the game to provide better food and water storage and production methods meant I just got tired of constantly stopping what I was doing to deal with it. So far, so good, much more fun.

I've installed Just Cause 3 on my Linux box with an eye towards starting that up again. It's on my Win7 box, but I stopped playing because it's just such a drag to use that thing.
